Davymid, can I move to whatever country you`re in? The fact that you had to do that is making me want to go hang myself.

That would be (1) a lie (lower than the peak, yes. Lower than the average, no) and (2) the spike that happened with a Democrat Congress, I assume you mean?

Of course the then-President`s response was to allow more drilling, which immediately suppressed prices in anticipation. This President, not so much.

If you actually took the time to do 1 minute of research you will find in the summer of 2008 when BUSH was president the average price of gas was higher than it is now. But why bother to research when you can just further try and find an excuse to hate obama.

5 Repubs vote against their own plan (which was doomed to fail since there`s a Dem majority, eh?) = BAD
ALL 50+ Dems VOTE AGAINST OBAMA`S plan (which is the defacto Dem plan since they offer nothing) = GOOD

It`s so easy, even a liberal can do it! Um, in fact that`s all the liberals CAN do...

Repubs offer a plan = BAD
Dems offer no plan = GOOD

Get it yet @madest? Didn`t think so...

Obama keeps Gitmo open? GOOD

Only 5 republicans in the Senate voted against the Ryan plan. Which means 42 republican Senators voted to dismantle Medicare and hand out vouchers instead. The first victim of the Ryan Plan was Kathy Hochul, who lost her solidly red district (NY26) last night in a landslide. Even though she did her damnedest to run away from her vote. Too late honey, she was beaten by facts and her own actions. Good luck to those 42 republican Senators and all the congressmen on record in support of the Ryan plan. I know they`ll be brow beaten come election time. Nobody is better at helping democrats than a republican! Oh one more thing. The Tea Party candidate got a mere 9% of the vote. They are not a force. They`re just loudmouth rabble rouser`s who don`t know squat.

duffy: We are subsidizing `green energy` and `big oil` companies applied for those subsidies just as other companies have to build windmills, solar energy, and bio-fuels.

madest failed to inform people that`s what the subsidies are actually for, because liberals love to rant against `big oil` no matter what.

madest: You need to take into consideration that the senate is still held by the democrats and Obama threatened to veto it, before it even came up for a vote. The vote was 57-40 and only 5 republicans voted against it, Those 5 saying said the bill didn`t cut spending near enough.

Another madest fail, on the facts.

Gerry: The environmentalists begged for subsidies, and got them through a democrat controlled congress and signed by a democrat president, for green energy projects because they claimed that the power companies had an unfair advantage, But they left it open so that ANY company can apply for those subsidies to develop those green projects.

Now madest is whining about those subsidies and attempting to call them an evil republican scheme. It`s about as two-faced as can be, If he was really upset about these subsidies where was his objection to them two years ago ?

I don`t want those subsidies either, But when they go I also don`t want to hear him whining that republicans killed `green energy` in the name of profits.
Hmm, why would US get their gas cheaper than the rest?
Mainly because their government doesn`t tax it anywhere near as much. Come to think of it, does the US government tax petrol or diesel at all?

Here in the UK, about 70% of the retail price of petrol and diesel is tax.

I`d like to see electric cars. They`re a fine idea. But right now they are actually a lot more expensive to run than petrol and diesel cars. Advocates fix the numbers by ignoring tax and battery replacement costs, but that is not a genuine comparison. Even if you ignore the cost of buying the car in the first place, the real cost comes out in favour of petrol and diesel on a like for like basis.

We need an alternative energy source though, on a massive scale and soon. Oil is increasingly expensive to obtain and we need it for so many other things.

If the massive battery improvements that are currently ideas and lab prototypes come to market, electric

Do any of you people realize that gasoline production costs are subsidized by the government, and the cost for fuel should probably BE like 3.50 a liter.

I`m not basing this on anything but logic really, but when I pay $1.40 for 1 liter of fuel at the pumps and then walk in for a soda that costs $2.31 for 591 mL, I start think that something may be a little screwy around here.

@madest your link is to a picture, no further links there, eh? I do see the 59 pages of suggestions though.

Also, your amazing inability to understand BASIC economics is appalling.

Raise Corp taxes = raise price of goods = POOR people suffer.
Lower Corp taxes = lower price of goods = POOR people benefit.

Period.

Same applies for increased energy costs: gas, oil, electric. They go up = costs go up = prices go up = POOR people suffer.

Another side effect of higher taxes (and energy prices) is higher unemployment, OH YEAH! That`s just what`s happening right now! Lets raise taxes some more! Lets skyrocket electricity costs! Good call @madest!

A lot of that was taken out of context. In addition, who in their right mind thinks that the president sets gas prices? Blame the gas companies and congress for not getting rid of the tax credits of the oil companies.

Not to mention it is REPUBLICANS who are always up in arms for government not to control corporations. And yet this ad is complaining that the government ISN`T controlling the corporations. Herp derp.

When gas prices rose under Bush, he: opened the national oil reserve (or whatever the technical name is) AND stimulated new drilling.
Obama: NO opening the reserve AND still ignores a Court Order to allow more drilling. Oh sure, he SAYS he wants more drilling, but in fact: not. Actions, like ignoring court orders and approving ONE new rig in the Gulf, speak louder than a teleprompter.

That said, I don`t believe the government should be subsidizing any large companies.

Sorry madest, but you can`t complain about oil companies `green energy` project subsidies and get those projects funded for free. Have Cake =/= Eat It Too.

Agrered crakr. If they would just make an alternative like Hydrogen viable and inexpensive, then it would take off.

People won`t go for an alternative that is more expensive than what we have, period. Drop the price of Hydrogen to the equivalent of $1 a gallon, and install the infrastructure so that it is readily available, and Gas will be gone forever.

AJ: That`s not what the liberals want though. The only way they can justify the extreme cost of alternative energy is raise the price of the conventional sources.

They believe the only reason people will buy hybrid and electric cars are when gasoline prices are high. So they`ve artificially created this `crisis` to push their agenda.

Oil levels are not as scarce as progressives let on.

There`s so much misinformation though, you can`t really rely on any one place for any definitive numbers. I`ve seen some places say we have 10 years of oil left, and I`ve seen some that say 500 years (at current population growth).

My point is, we should USE WHAT`S THERE while we research new alternatives that are VIABLE.

That way, what we have stays low, and it gives us time to create a new fuel alternative that is as cheap.

Well the fact is that the worlds supply for oil is limited. So no matter how many countries the USA invades and rapes for oil the laws of supply and demand will still apply... and when the oil runs low the cost will rise well above $4.

So if you think the best plan is to do what we have always done... your retarded.

The solution is renewable energy!!! Solar, wind, tide, etc....

Okay, so what? Keeping in mind shale and tar sands is horrendously destructive to the envrionment, it does not matter we`re not drilling. If we begin, it will have no immediate impact on our economy and by the time it will, oil will be so scarce and expensive that the oil companies will sell it to the highest bidder and we`ll still be paying for it at the pump.

Just look at Texas as an example. 75 years ago you couldn`t throw a stone without hitting a well rig, today they`re comparatively nonexistent. We need to start investing and using new technology NOW, so when there isn`t anymore cheap oil we won`t be left high and dry wondering what to do.
