A Girl And Her Squirrel

You expect cuteness, but something just isn"t quite right here...is it the kid"s actions or the parents nonreaction?

"There has never been a reported case of transmission of rabies from a squirrel to a human" Assuming you know what you`re talking about(doubtful,)there`s a first time for everything. And @auburnjunky, I don`t know where you`re from but there are rabid animals all over my area (Southern Colorado) and we are warned on the news REPEATEDLY to stay away from the wildlife. Rabies is out there and you can definitely get it from a squirrel, skunk, raccoon, or what have you.

i did, but wasn`t sure about how to say it. i thought "lol, zoom into the boobs!" but it`d sound pedobearish. so i quit trying to talk instead of trying to make a new sentence

This child is about 4 or 5. From 3 to 6 years children believe death is irreversible .Adults confuse the issue by using phrases like "at rest" or "at peace" or "passed on or passed away" (as if they are going somewhere) and tell kids death is like going to sleep so logically they think you could wake up ! This little girl is so innocent she isn`t upset by the squirrel being dead because she probably imagines it might be alive later.I can`t believe the amount of people who saw something sinister like a future serial killer in the making ! tooooo much T.V folks ! And all this insane fuss about germs and viruses when most of you take that risk everyday preparing dinner or emptying miss Kitty`s litter box !!!...Not to mention the truly disgusting and dangerous diseases human beings carry. I`d rather hold a dead squirrel than use a public toilet !

At least the mom is a little embarrassed about it. I would still like to beat the stupid out of her parents. :/ Children really should not play with dead animals.

@evanbartlett:

That`s weird. My son was attacked by a dog 10 years ago. I asked the doc about rabies. They said they would test to be sure, but to not worry about it, because rabies is all but eradicated in this country.

omfg. I just read that a case of BUBONIC PLAGUE was tagged in New Mexico. But, let your kid play with a dead (flea & mocrobe-carrying) squirrel... we wouldn`t want her to fear death or anything when she is in the hospital dying of BUBONIC PLAGUE.

I agree with BJH515 and diseased? I`m gonna go out on a limb here and assume you are referring to rabies... There has never been a reported case of transmission of rabies from a squirrel to a human. Still toddlers playing with dead corpses can`t be good unless you are teaching them about hunting or some buzz.

random882, small furry animals carry a lot of fleas, mites and other insects that do carry infections. It`s not as harmless as you would like to think! Also, the animal may have been rabid which does not go away when it dies. Wise up.

"However a squirrel that looks fully intact, possibly broken neck, is NOT as HARMFUL as most would like to think. Most the diseases
are transmitted by bites.. Dead things don`t bite.. And its not as if the girl is licking the thing.."

Since the dog killed it, it probably has puncture wounds. So all internal viruses and bacteria apply. (She even wipes something on her leg at some point.) And who knows if she put her fingers in her mouth? But more importantly, the saliva and skin contain many of these pathogens, so just touching it (even alive, but especially after it is dead) can contaminate her.

".... Rabies? Really?
Rabies isn`t a concern in the US anymore."

Our emergency room just treated a husband and wife who were both bitten by a rabid raccoon. Suburban California. It definitely still exists.

Oh, and I`m a medical doctor, BTW.

OK RAW MEAT? Really... I didn`t realize the squirrel was Skinned and she was RUBBING RAW MEAT all over her... I could understand if the thing was bleeding all over her.. Then yes the parents should have gotten it out of her hands quickly.. However a squirrel that looks fully intact, possibly broken neck, is NOT as HARMFUL as most would like to think. Most the diseases
are transmitted by bites.. Dead things don`t bite.. And its not as if the girl is licking the thing.. Geez...

"OH BTW a lot of people squirrel hunt and eat them.. They are not as BACTERIA ridden as you all seem to think.. NOT only that she already touched it.. Just bathe up after words.. Not a big deal.. IM SURE that all of you baulking at this probably run to the HAND SANITIZER every time you touch ANYTHING.."

Indeed, people do eat squirrel meat. The difference here is that the child has a weaker immune system than does an adult, and is slathering the "raw meat" all over her. Squirrels are notorious (not to put too fine a point on it) for a whole host of diseases ranging from various poxes to rabies to a virus that causes hepatitis. Yes. They are very much BACTERIA ridden. And VIRUS ridden.

their dog probably kills lots of squirrels and it isn`t the first time that girl has cuddled with a dead one. still, i wouldn`t let my child touch it. every wild animal is dirty and maybe carrying some disease.

The first reaction should have been:
"OMG DON`T TOUCH THAT!. IT`S FULL OF BACTERIA AND BUGS AND LICE. NEVER EVER TOUCH A DEAD ANIMAL AGAIN"
As opposed to this:
"Get the camera"

Honestly, the parents don`t need to be psychotic in this situation. If the kid asks why she can`t see the squirrel anymore her parents will tell her. Its just a different parenting style.

Get that girl in the bath for sure. All those mites, fleas etc. are jumping ship. I would also call a doctor and ask about naked child exposure to dead squirrel.

It isn`t the "yuck" factor that upsets me--it`s the fact that squirrels are common carriers of some pretty nasty pathogens. In one sense, I`m impressed that the girl has a healthy sense of death, etc, but the moment that kid starts developing jaundice and vomiting, the camera man won`t think it`s so cute. (At least the mom (?) is demonstrating some degree of horror.)
