    For one, I`m pretty sure that`s a BB gun. The slide, trigger, grip and hammer don`t look like they belong to anything I`ve ever seen, unless it`s some horrible Springfield knock-off.

    Two, it`s perfectly acceptable to check the barrel like that as long as you drop the magazine and rack the slide, emptying the firing chamber beforehand.

    At least she`s not stupid enough to have her finger on the trigger.

    you should always treat guns as if they are loaded. if you think it has something stuck in the barrel disassemble the gun. , i also like the irony of a Canadian (LazyMe484) commenting on possible reason as to why this may be acceptable; handguns are basically illegal to own in canada.

    "TREAT EVERY GUN AS A LOADED GUN."

    Even if you take out the clip, rack the slide clean, and dry fire it to check? All of this with the safety on?

    That logic fails. If I have something in the barrel of my pistol, my ass will look for it. It could dam,age the gun, and cause it to backfire or jam.

    auburn... if you have something in the barrel of your gun then you either lock the slide back and observe the breach or you disassemble it. You DO treat EVERY weapon as loaded even if you`ve removed the magazine, racked it, and dry fired it. Weapon safety 101 here. "Unloaded" weapons are responsible for the most firearm accidents, after all. I`ve fired tons of weapons, been in the military, been deployed, own a small armory, and i would NEVER point a weapon at my head no matter how many times i dry fired it with the magazine out. If you can`t trouble shoot a weapon without pointing it at your self then you probably should not own a gun.

    All that being said the gun in the picture is probably an airsoft or something silly like that AT BEST. Either way, good way to lose an eye!

    Yep, i have one as well. CO2 powered pellet/bb gun with 8 pellet revolving magazine. You can kill squirrels with in, and if youve seen christmas story, you know you can put your eye out. This is definitely a picture, though, of an air gun with no pellets or gas in it, and taken for comedic effect. If someone can come up with a better explanation as to why this picture exists, let it be heard. But if it was loaded, and ready to fire, this could easily cause brain damage or death. This is what theyre talking about when they say misuse can lead to death.

    Oh boy, we got some real NRA firearms instructors here at IAB.

    @AUBURNJUNKY,
    If you can rack and dry fire your firearm with the safety still on, you should take it to a gun smith immediately. And repeatedly refer to the magazine as a "clip" so they know to charge you extra for being a n00b.

    Umm Yeah. That is a plastic gun. So thug if you have one, good luck with it. And I am a gunsmith, and if anyone ever brought me a gun they could repeatedly rooster (the correct term, not rack) and dry fire, I would void any warranty on it and kick them out of my shop for bringing in an unsafely modified gun. And for all you terminology Nazi`s out there, clip is just as correct as magazine. Magazine refers to anything that holds ammo (thus Naval Magazine Pearl Harbor isn`t something you read) Clip refers to the magazine being clipped into the receiver of the weapon.

    wow, a gunsmith who doesn`t know the difference between a clip and a magazine or the difference between roostering a gun and racking the slide... oh and as far as roostering/ racking and dry firing? that`s called a functions check and doesn`t void any warranties. In fact any weapons manual will instruct you to do so to perform a functions check, particularly after stripping it.

    the most important fire arms safety rule:TREAT EVERY GUN AS A LOADED GUN

    While that`s a good general rule of thumb it`s also very contradictory. If you treat your guns like they`re always loaded you`d never be able to clean it and inspect it`s bore. If you don`t know how to check if a guns loaded and clear it you shouldn`t be handling a gun.

    It may seem stupid but when handling a gun that is proper procedure to make sure nothing is lodged in the barrel, assuming she did this after the steps prior to it when you make sure the gun is unloaded and the safety is on.
