That`s one of the most impressive things I`ve seen on this site yet. I always try to get that point across, and this is perfect.

English has many Latin roots because of influence from other languages, but I alpensepp is basically right. English and German both derived from the same proto-germanic language, and was heavily influenced by French due to French and English speakers sharing much of history together (French speakers were higher-class, so while French influenced English, it did not go the other way around as well).
English has many connections to Latin, but it is probably closer to German. This is usually why languages like French, Spanish, and Italian are referred to as "Latin-based" languages, and English is not.

I guessed 79 on looks and a bit older when he spoke- possibly 87. What a handsome man he is- I bet he has more than a few young girls chasing him ( if I was 75 I would be after him!)

@Burton_Ian: If we wrote phonetically then everything would read like a dystopic novel about the crumbling of society.

It would be nice for everyone if we had a phonetic language... but then what would spelling Nazis do to make themselves feel better about their lives?

We have to think about the little people.

DixxyRarr: Yeah, I used to love watching Gallagher. I think he had some great bits. I definitely agree that the pitchman routine was a little unnecessary.

I have no sympathy for people who cannot spell. Why? because it is easy. We teach it to 4 and 5 year olds.

Gallagher is actually pretty funny when he`s not smashing fruit and whatnot...

Damn, I was thinking low 90`s. Pretty impressive for an old codger. I`m guessing he was a teacher once upon a time; it would explain the well rehearsed speech.
