What do you think is being used to take out tanks and bunkers in Lybia? The US isn`t the only country to use uranium tipped warheads.

@McGovern: I agree. The mandate was to uphold a no-fly zone over Libya. The reason was that Gadaffi threathened to use fighter jets against protestors. In my opinion the UN mandate was correct: these are the excact reasons that we have the UN; to stop imminent threats against large groups of civilians.

Things are getting out of hand, though - and some parties here are revising their support to Libya activity. I agree to that.

But you can`t compare Libya to Iraq just like that. There are major differences: years of bombing Iraq`s infrastructure, causing a lack of water and electricity resulting in thousands of dead civilians is one thing. The use of uranium shells, causing cancer and deformed babies all over Iraq is another.

So when the US goes to war in the Middle East it`s a war for oil. When the UN picks a revolution to support out of many that also happens to be a major supplier of oil to said European participants it`s for "freedom".

Yeah, the whole problem with this army headgear, is that the beret is way oversized. I mean, all of them berets are oversized, so you can keep one ear warm by pulling one side down over it. Look at how they done that here... the point is just that the other side is standing up far too high still.

Been there, done that, for the RNLAF, but it never was this bad. Nor are they lined up to the standards I`ve been taught, but hey, who knows... There`s nothing fun in the caption combined with the picture, just in the way they wear their berets.

Why is it so hard to come up with an army hat that doesn`t look ridiculous?

Ours suck too.

France, among others opposed the Iraq war.

In retrospective; there were no WMDs, Saddam had nothing to do with Al Quaeda and G.W.Bush is now wanted for war crimes. He cancelled a trip to Europe, because the risk of him being arrested. Human rights Groups have prepared documents, ready in several countries to have Bush arrested.

This post is represents the last resort of the bully who never had a valid argument. Confronted with the silent yet devastating argument of reality, mockery is the only weapon left to use.

Because the berets make them look like am artist rather than a warrior.

Since when did the UN dictate to any country what to wear?

Urban legend I heard and debunked pretty drating fast:

That the French flag used to be white (it was) and that the tradition for surrender was to raise the opposing faction`s flag to say "this is now your land". According to the myth, the French kicked so much ass that the white flag became the standard to display surrender.

It is untrue as far as I could be bothered with such a mundane detail. And yes, the French have kicked a lot of ass in the past, and are kicking a LOT of ass in Lybia...

So one French unit wears somewhat silly hats on some formal occasion. Tiny woo.

One unit or an entire legion?

Sorry bruddah but it`s hard for me take the untis wearing the Kepi Blanc serious without a smirk. Even though a fine army don`t you think it should fade away? Especially from acountry who prides itself in the fashion world.

As for resistance groups and armies, why would resistance groups fielding upwards of 5000 trained and equipped soldiers in open warfare with the enemy *not* be considered an army?

Not all of the French resistance were undercover agents. Where circumstances allowed, they were a lot more overt. For example, Nancy Wake (a remarkable person - it`s well worth reading about her) led ~7000 of them. I`d call that an army.

So one French unit wears somewhat silly hats on some formal occasion. Tiny woo. There are plenty of odd military traditions in formal settings. We`ve got some who wear bearskin hats 18 inches high and bright scarlet jackets...when on ceremonial guard duty. We even still have a unit of *archers*. Traditions are important in the military.

I`d link to the Cracked article on it, but IAB`s idiotic censorship system won`t allow me.

The idea that the French always surrender and have never had anything like a real army is one of the silliest pieces of nationalist bigotry ever made up. They even fought England at the height of its power, on and off for centuries and on English land actually occupied by the English with adequate supplies and with a will to keep that land (i.e. nothing at all like the USA`s revolution...which even them was only possible because of lots of French help). They won, eventually - that land (mostly Normandy) is now French. The French have fought almost everyone over the years and beaten most of them. Anyone who says "List some actual wars the French (army, not resistance groups) have won." is just showing that they know nothing at all about any of the relevant parts of history.

@piperfawn:
But the French are now currently at their Fifth Republic, aren`t they? So it`s hardly the original constitution of 1789.
But did you know that the Dutch Act of Abjuration is even older? It was signed in 1581(!) and it was formal declaration of independence of the Dutch Low Countries from the Spanish king, Philip II.

Hurray for the Dutch! 8-)

Oh, and Napoleon wasn`t short, by the way. He was 1.68m (5` 6") which was average-ish at that time.

After 9/11 when Bush was asking for international support to invade Iraq and the French basically told him to go F himself (How can you NOT respect that?). Anger at the French faded along with support for the war, but a lot of people still support what we did over there and are still butthurt at the French for not backing our play.

You do terribly one century and you`ve lost all credibility. I mean its not like the British lost against a bunch of colonists with sticks (Pretty much since they obviously didn`t have the equipment the military did.) or the Americans lost to a buncha guys with pea shooters (Vietnam, but then again that is France`s fault. So I`ll give that to ya.) But regardless each nation has their own history of defeats and victories. If they don`t have a history of victories then it`d be a surprise they`d still be their own country. France just did a lot better 200 years ago. I have a feeling this is going to be a good century.

Just my input.

Google "Napoleonic wars". Wikipedia "Military history of France".

Then google "U.S. Vietnam war" and "U.S. Korean War".

The history of war is more than just who wins or loses, the Nazi`s ultimately lost, but it cost millions of lives to bring the war to an end.

You should stay off the internet until you finish middle school.

France has always been a major military power in the world, even during their occupation by Germany in World War II (which I am guessing is the extent of OP`s knowledge of "the history of mankind") they were active on the battlefield. Furthermore, the beret is a common part of the military uniforms of several nations, obviously not part of combat attire.

Perhaps it`s because they aren`t used to it. Anyway, this post wasn`t set up to be taken in the spirit of a joke. The picture just shows some soldiers standing in a row with no sign at all of cowardice, and the description is extremist in the opposite direction. Doesn`t make sense.

Its almost a joke in the other direction - that this sort of (dare I say, american-born?) stereotype has no grounds in reality.

I don`t even care about the french, I just find this very boring.
