Too over the top for a college lesson I-A-B? I wonder what you had to do to get extra credit?

@LandoGriffin Both the female performer and the male who helped her had volunteered for the presentation. Neither had been paid at all.

IMHO I cannot see what the fuss is about.

#1 - The students were warned REPEATEDLY about the graphic nature of the presentation.
#2 - The after-class portion, which was when the demonstration took place, was NOT required.
#3 - It is a HUMAN SEXUALITY course, so the demonstration is well within the bounds of the course topics and materials.
#4 - All of the students were over the age of consent (18) and had not only enrolled in the course of their own free will, but had decided to stay.
#5 - It has been said that NONE of the students took issue with the presentation. If they had, they could have left at any time.

So in closing, who the fu©k cares! Let`s all move on from this old news.

I think the only controversy is spending a substantial amount of money hiring a live model, who routinely charge hundreds if not thousands of dollars for such an appearance, when every other professor of every other subject shows a video. Imagine if a Psychology professor hired a person with schizophrenia to come and give a talk to a college class for a thousand dollars when s/he could have just shown a video showing the same thing.

I wish us "stupid Americans" didn`t think violence is ok and sex is some horrible thing that can`t be talked about/demonstrated openly in public (realistic fake sex causes much more outcry than realistic fake violence in film). I personally would rather have rough sex than a rough bar fight.

With that attitude I bet you had many bar fights. Stop generalizing your fellow countrymen. You have no concept of love as you refer to having sex as an animal. Freak a typical juvenile mentality.

Uh... what were you suppose to learn from this? And what are you suppose learn from this class that you shouldn`t already know?

I also think that the "professor" may be the opiate addicted, androgynous alien from Marlyn Manson`s Mechanical Animals.

This is soooo old guys. And it really wasn`t all that controversial to anyone here. The only people that seemed to care were the people in Evanston and others outside the university. Not a big deal. Wasn`t even mandatory to go to it...

I personally would rather have rough sex than a rough bar fight. Do we not realize that we are animals and making babies is the meaning of life, continuation of the species? Pull your heads out of your asses and realize that sex is not only a normal part of life but the most important part of it at the most basic, animalistic level, and really fun. We need to get off our fake 1950`s "if you have sex before marriage you will die" ideals, STDs are serious and precautions should be taken. Also get off the high horse I`m above the lesser creatures, sex is bad, bullpoo I blame our (k-12) education system and the pope(s) for this bullpoo, welcome to life (select, sheltered) college students, deal with it.

Learning not to hit your thumb with a hammer is educational, but does it deserve university study? I`m saddened by universities these days. They seem to be pandering to gullible kids, taking their hard earned tuition money and telling them they are learning noble things. All that`s happening is that money is paid and students graduate thinking that they got a serious education, when all they did was get indoctrinated and coddled by professors with goofy ideas about society and disdain for rigorous academcs.

Geez if I was a women i would be pissed at the insult of wasting what $400.00 tuition on a class. When practically this is a no brainier tool. All you have to do to learn is rent a porn flick for $5.00. What a rip off!

This seems totally appropriate to me in a course that aims to study sexuality in the true spirit of academic inquiry and freedom. Sexuality is a normal and vital aspect of what it means to be a human being, and taboos around sex are senseless and irrational. It wouldn`t make sense to teach a gastronomy class, but not permit students to actually see any real food. Of course this offended the sensibilities of some people- but puritanical sensibilities are a major component of the US`s sexual dysfunction.

@Cajun247 I can`t tell if you are being sarcastic or not so I`ll err on the side of caution: The point of the course isn`t for advice, it`s to study various aspects of human sexuality.

It`s perhaps a little more dramatic than art class nude models, but how many of the attendees do you think witnessed their first real life female orgasm? I`m thinking that part of it was probably very educational for them. I applaud this.

I think I`ll go watch "Monty Python`s Meaning of Life" now.

An some what old topic
Very odd thing, I doubt the necessity to use the sex toy on her, simply seeing one fills all the questions about it`s function.
He did give a thorough disclaimer it seems, if you were offended, it`s your own fault for having not left sooner

Nothing like 2-month old news...

Honestly though. These students are adults. They were told beforehand what the demonstration entailed and that they did not need to stay for it. If they got offended it is their own fault.

A live sex show is rather odd for a university, but I think that as an optional extra on a human sexuality course it`s not inappropriate.
That being said, I don`t see how masturbating in front of hundreds of people provides much "information", but I`m not an expert in advanced female masturbation techniques or whatever they were learning at the time so what do I know?
Maybe it was more about social customs and psychology, perhaps both that of the exhibitionist and the audience, than a practical demonstration of technique. I can see how it could fit into that sort of thing and a human sexuality course would cover social customs and psychology regarding sex.
So this demonstration showed guys how to make a woman orgasm, and women how to use a dildo. And this is bad because...?
So lets get this straight, taking private sexy pictures with your personal cell phone is trashy and bad, but explicitly demonstrating how masturbate with a sex toy in front of a crowd of people is perfectly acceptable?

I think this is a very valuable lesson. Sex is far too taboo in U.S. and people need to chill out, or rather GET LAID...hahaha :D We need to understand ourselves as sexual beings because sexuality is a huge part of our humanity. The more we suppress it the more problems we will have. I thought the talks with sex offenders was also very interesting. I wish I had a class like this at my College!!

@Sathon

You notice that this COULD have some educational value for the goddamn HUMAN SEXUALITY COURSE the students are attending. Understandably, this could be offensive to some, but some could find a great deal of information from the stimulation and psychology behind an orgasm...I`m not being subjective to my own demeanor, just giving a general sense to why this could actually be beneficial to the crowd.

I`ve always wondered why people are so "up tight" about sex in any form, Let me add something, does anyone here get "up tight" regarding seeing a women`s ankle? That would not too long ago, infect no longer than a generation (shame that generation doesn`t us the internet), hands up here who doesn`t know what sex is about and what "the other halves" `parts` look like! No one? O yes that`s why, because that`s life!!!!

The question of "what part does prudishness have in the modern world" comes to mind. America is, as always, a bit behind the times when it comes to not being a prudish bunch.

In the 80s, nude or clothing optional) beaches were in almost every part of the world. There are still relatively few in America.

I say that to point out this: do you think the demonstration would have raised much controversy had it been somewhere besides America?

"Are you against these things?"

I`ll make the analogy to a painting of three vertical stripes that sold for $1.8 million dollars, being considered as "art." You can watch all the sex acts you want and call it education, it`s still bullpoo.

I fail to see how there was any educational value in watching a female masturbate on stage and I doubt a single person who stayed to watch the demonstration did so for educational purposes.

There are places where one can go to watch people have sex on stage. College classrooms should not be one of them.

There is nothing at all that shouldn`t be taught to someone provided that the someone want`s to learn it.

Also, this sex toy demonstration seems perfectly in line with the "human sexuality" course. You probably even get a disclaimer before you start. Nothing wrong with that.

That being said, I don`t see how masturbating in front of hundreds of people provides much "information", but I`m not an expert in advanced female masturbation techniques or whatever they were learning at the time so what do I know?

Go ahead and do it.

You know, there are some days when I just stop and wonder what people from fifty - or even fifteen - years ago would think if they were given a glimpse of what people were like today.

I usually come to the conclusion that they would be disgusted.

A post about porn being allowed in libraries and live sex acts being performed on stage in a college classroom, both in one day?

What the drat is happening to my precious world...
