Yeah once you get that successful comedy career off the ground I may reconsider. Right now when it comes from you it`s just mean spirited attacks on minorities. Perhaps Pauly Shore will will have an open mike night and you can try out your act on an actual audience. Lets hope no one of color is there.

jtrebowski: It`s not about being PC, JT. I believe the words MLK Jr. said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of character".

Character is what is most important, Unfortunately Obama lacks it. But that doesn`t give someone the right to send a racist e-mail out about him, or anyone else.

I can`t help but be reminded of the bigoted things said and drawn about Condoleazza Rice and Colin Powell, by the left, which were equally racist as this e-mail.

Over-sensitivity strikes again. George W. Bush was routinely compared to monkeys. Why? Because he looks like a monkey. Obama also looks like a monkey. It isn`t racist to say so.

Why is it funny to portray a white guy as a monkey, but offensive and hateful when it`s a black guy? The only way to justify that line of thinking is if you actually believe black people are like monkeys... which is, by the same logic, racist.

I told myself I would stay out of this, because I knew it was going to be a Troll-fest.

I`m jumping in here to speak on CrakJak`s behalf. Even though CrakrJak and I do not, and will probably never agree on some things, I don`t see him as a racist.

From his posts over the years, I would agree that he is somewhat conservative (as am I when it comes to the economy of the U.S.), he`s certainly not the type that would condone racist behavior.

And we`re ALL a little racist sometimes... The quicker we can all admit that to ourselves, the quicker we can TRY to get past it.

I can be just as racist as anyone here. (No, I won`t tell you who I`m prejudiced against, because I honestly don`t know why this group bugs the poo out of me, and I`m making strides towards learning more about this particular culture and trying to understand... I`m embarrassed that I have these feelings.)

Here`s the context, in case anyone only sees Madest`s taking it out of context and thus is misled into thinking he might have a point:

Madest:
Don`t let Angilion troll you. He`s a smart guy. He`s aware there are scientific differences amongst race. Don`t believe for a minute that he has somehow erased race from his life, he might not have to interact with other races but he knows they exist.
After addressing Madest`s untrue statement about science, I wrote:
As an aside, *by your standards* I interact with people of various "races" on a daily basis. Fortunately for me, I don`t live by your standards so I don`t have to care. It`s a problem for you, not for me.

I live in a city in England. We don`t have segregation here. Also by your standards, "white" is a minority "race" in my home area, so most of the people I interact with are of a different "race" to me. By your standards.
Reply
Male 12,365
What I find hard to understand is how you can claim to be free of the concept of race but be aware of segregation and your minority status. But whatever works for you.
I replied to a specific point that YOU MADE, repeating over and over again that I was arguing within your framework. I was doing so solely to demonstrate that you were once again completely wrong. Which is to expected since you`re making stuff up without any thought solely to fit your extremely simple worldview.

I was not claiming to be blind.

Yes, I can see that most of the people in my neighbourhood have darker skin than I do.

No, I do not see that as a valid reason to classify them as being meaningfully different to me.

Do you understand the difference?

Bottom line: not everyone is as obsessed with skin colour as you are. It`s just an adaptation to local weather conditions. It`s just a suntan. It`s nothing of any importance.

Why is it that if you portray Obama as a chimp, it`s racist, but if you portray Bush as a chimp, it`s "the highest form of patriotism?"

The only way this makes sense is if you truly believe in your heart that black people are genetically closer to chimps than are white people.

So, who are the REAL racists?

outwest, nobody is getting the banhammer for this discussion here. although with all the personal attacks, it did get out of hand, and if it kept going i could see it going too far and somebody actually getting banned. though it would only be a temp, just so everyone could cool off. I just spent quite a bit of time reading through this interesting and heart felt discussion.

I think it was started to poke at political opponents and then gets crazy when those same opponents react? Suprised even? As if the reaction wasn`t expected ...lol

I like the site and the discussion, but I don`t like the threats of censorship and banning? People do not have to agree with those in power do they?

In the end this type of discussion does little to solve the differences between the parties. And even less to help fix racism....

Nobody is saying that it came from the Christian bible. I`d like to clarify that again.

Ancient Greeks talked about people of different cultures, but that`s not the same thing as "race". Can you support your argument that ancient Greeks had a word or concept with the same meaning as "race" in modern English?

Of course, the main influence ~2000 years ago would be Roman and they didn`t use the idea of "race".

Also to clarify - I`m not arguing that those cultures were free of irrational prejudices. Just not that particular one.
angillion, race as we know it is thought of to have come from many years of selection in different parts of the world. In some cases, it is also thought to be possible that some of it has come from the mating of homosapiens with homoneandrethalis. some people even believe that is where red hair in europeans and middleeasterners comes from.
Minor local adaptations over an evolutionary trivial period of time that result in tiny differences that are much smaller than the natural variations between individuals are not a valid basis for such a strongly made classification as "race".

That would be true even if it followed those adaptations, but it doesn`t even do that. It almost entirely comes down to insanely inaccurate descriptions of skin colour and a desperate desire to pretend there are only two possible human skin colours - black and white.

Frankly, it`s irrational enough to be bordering on insanity.

No.

One person - Student Law - is arguing that Christianity is the source of racism. Not the Christian bible.

I`ve argued that it isn`t that simple. Christianity was a contributory factor, but I think it wasn`t the cause.

It isn`t the stupidity you claim it is. It is true that the idea of race was made up later and didn`t exist before Christianity gained power. I think that`s a partial correlation and mostly coincidence. Student Law thinks that it`s cause and effect.

Well, I headed off your opportunity to falsely accuse me of racism directly, so you used some other lies and an indirect accusation.

So you`re even less honest than I expected. Are there no depths of dishonesty that you won`t stoop to to promote racism?

There is no such thing as race. Learn something about human biology, and I mean real biology and not wherever sites you`re getting your disinformation from. You are making completely untrue statements because your faith the idea of race and your devotion to promoting the idea that people should be treated differently because of "race" is over-riding your intelligence.

That is our closest relative, monkeys would be a little more different.

@Angillion. Well, i agree that racism as we recognize it today, towards colored people - and especially arabs and persians have not manifested itself in the same forms through all times. Now i define racism as the idea that one race consideres itself superior to anoter. Weather it is white towards blacks or arabs towards jews belongs in the sub-category and may, as you imply, change over time and even disappear and come back. But the very ideology, if i can call it so - has followed a pattern through out history, and the primary source is the bible. Of course this took time. This is also why the term "evolution" is appropriate to use regarding racism, from the church of Jesus until today.

by the way people, STEREOTYPES are a form of RACISM. They perpetuate false beliefs about an entire group of people that often cause harm to that group and are used to portray them negatively and to discriminate against them. In short, they are used to dehumanize a group in order to make it easier to justify mistreatment of that group.

wake up people.

@ elkingo,

really? are you that simple minded? you are defintely white, there is no doubt about that, which is why you cannot udnerstand the issue here. YOU DO NOT CALL a black person a MONEKY when HISTORICALLY they have been called monkeys to refer to their race and intelligence. There is NO WAY around that.

there are other animals in the animal world that are considered stupid and have NO racial attributes connected to them. COWS for one are considered a stupid animal, and yet no one would think it is racist.

I suspect however, that you are closet racist and see this as just another example of how the liberal media is taking away your white right to do whatever, whenever and to whoever as long as they are not white, as you like.

This is racist because Obama, if you didn`t notice, is BLACK and BLACKS have been called CHIMPS, MONKEYS, etc since white people first discovered, determined they didn`t like, and then ENSLAVED them.

saying, "bush was called a chimp" doesn`t excuse the above mentioned facts. Calling a white person a chimp is NOT racist because historically whites were never called chimps or monkeys as a way of comparing them visually and intellectually.

white people, just accept that this is and was meant to be racist and that most of you ARE racist. Why you dont think you are racist is because whites do not understand discrimination because they HAVE NEVER BEEN systemically discriminated against by a society DOMINATED and CONTROLLED by another DOMINATE RACE.

Google "White Privilege", keep an open mind and realize that if you are white, you do benefit from it, you have never really experienced racism and there are no racial slurs that will offend you (no

If her intent was that he was stupid she could have found a way to show that without denigrating a monkey. Genetically the monkey is only .02% away from being human so one could argue that a monkey is indeed top of the animal kingdom in smarts. No she was going for black as in the N-word black. I`m no Einstein but it`s pretty goddamn clear to me that she`s a racist. One of those old time racists that loves a good n*gger joke. I wouldn`t give a flying f*ck even if I was black, even if I lived in the media-controlled USA, EVEN IF I lived in the same area as this person. The first question out of me would be: You`re an elected official, can`t you find a better use for your time?

I think it`s more complicated than that, because there`s good evidence that racism didn`t really exist in Christian-dominated areas until quite late medieval times, i.e. long after Christianity came to power. Here in England, for example, historians and archaeologists have uncovered good evidence that a fair few people emigrated from Africa to England early in the last millenium, maybe some even before 1000 AD, and it wasn`t recorded because it wasn`t an issue. Sure, they were foreigners, but no more so than, for example, a Dutch person. In some cases, they moved here because it was a country dominated by Christianity.

Soooo.. if I compare Obama to a monkey because he is stupid and un-evolved, is that okay?

Also, how do you know that was or wasn`t the creator`s intent?

Or better yet.. is there something stupid, ignorant, lazy, self diluted, and a bad leader that I can compare Obama to that isn`t racist?

Just curious. It certainly seems that ANY negative comments about Obama are considered racist.

What you have YET to address to me (although I noted your mea culpa to Cobrakiller) is how your selective quotes remove context, re-word what Obama said....and in one case does not appear in anything Obama ever wrote.

There are some people who think race exists. They`re wrong. They have no reason to think race exists - it`s just a matter of faith on their part. Worse than most forms of faith because it can be proven wrong whereas most forms of faith are unfalsifiable.

Now, on a purely intellectual level, I`m inclined to agree with you. On a more pragmatic level, I couldn`t disagree with you more. Race may not exist as a geneological construct, but it most definitely does as a social construct. And as a social construct, there is a HUGE difference between portraying a black person as a monkey and a white person as a monkey. What I was pointing out was that, right or wrong, you are in the minority when claiming that to be a double standard. As you said, saying so does not make it true.

Evolution. It`s sad to see that still after so many years many people haven`t got the slightest idea of what it is. Some people are even so stupid that they think it means "the strongest survive." Others claim that evolution says that man evolved from a monkey. However we have to give the old drawing of "the evolving man" some credit for this stupid misunderstanding. A picture putting the man in front, the neanterthal in the middle and the monkey in the back has ruined a lot. Another important issue regarding racism is of course the church. Some of the roman leaders were black men. This was never a issue back then, so it`s never been conveyed historically.

The church of Jesus however, gave mankind the "gift" of the idea that a race called jews had killed their beloved saviour.

I don`t believe that race doesn`t exist. I know that it doesn`t exist. It`s a proven fact that it doesn`t exist. No belief is required.

Angilion, Perhaps jumping into a conversation you weren`t involved with may give the impression I`m incoherent. I got no problem with that. You can even consider me a hypocrite if you like. My job here as a mod is just that: To moderate. I`m not going to sit here and be concerned with names people call me. But if racists come here and post pictures of their racism then yeah my moderator hat comes on and I do what I`m tasked to do.
This is not your argument. I got no beef with you, but you should know that racism isn`t a European thing and your understanding of it would be a coming from Europeans viewpoint. Was that coherent enough?

You couldn`t prove that in a million years, and if you tried you`d probably go through some heart-warming experiences that would prove you otherwise and restore some faith in humanity a bit. There ARE people out there who are unaffected by the concept, or even unaware of it altogether.

DuckBoy87:

Maybe so, and almost certainly so in the USA because it was such an issue there, but it doesn`t have to be so. "race" is a relatively new idea and has no basis in fact. Modern science shows that clearly with genetics - a handful of trivialities swamped by the far larger degree of variation between individuals, which is itself trivial. Humans are far more similar than other similar animals, which is why it`s generally thought most likely to be true that humans were almost wiped out relatively recently - if we`re all descended from a small number of survivors, that would explain the unusual degree of similarity.

Wandered off track there...if we`re going to get rid of the idea of race (which we should do because it`s wrong and unfair), I think the best approach is to aim for that goal from the start. The end is the means. We could get rid of it within a few generations that way.

Millions of black people that have actually experienced racism would disagree.

Yes, caricaturing politicians in a manner insulting to them is fine. Obama`s got big ears. Dandy. But racism exists, whether you believe in it or not, and comparing the first black President to a monkey is ridiculously racist.

Wow, Angilion, normally I disagree with you.
This is a rare occurrence, because I`m in 100% agreement with the whole "race is inexistent" and "double-standards" things.

However, the idea of race is in existence, and everyone acts upon those ideas. Not saying that they always act upon them in the extreme, but to some extent everyone is racist.

A few points for the short bus crowd:

1) George W. Bush is white. Caricaturizing a white person as a monkey does not denote racism.

2) Barack Obama is black. Caricaturizing a black person as a monkey absolutely denotes racism.

3) There is no double standard involved here; white people have not been historically denigrated by being compared to monkeys.

4) Anyone unaware of this is not informed enough on racism in America (or the western hemisphere) to speak on it.

5) Anyone who denies this is either a) dumb as a post or b) completely disingenuous and c) possibly racist.

6) Selectively quoting from "Dreams From my Father" does not prove that Obama is a racist. It just proves that you should stop believing in emails forwarded to you from stupid, dishonest and/or racist people.

I`m an outside observer, which gives me a different viewpoint.

So let me get this straight:

i) Obama made openly racist statements in published books, but that`s OK because he`s of the "right" race.

ii) Someone caricatured Obama in exactly the same way that various other politicians have been caricatured. It was OK to do it to them because they were of the "wrong" race, but it`s dreadful to do it to him because he`s of the "right" race.

Looks like a whole shedload of anti-"white" racism to me.

As citizen, people have the right to feel and say whatever they want. There is no law against being racist. The only thing I have a problem with is when that racism turns into action and people get hurt in some way by it.

But things are different if you`re an elected official. Even though racist they may be, they should certainly not convey that in any medium. They are put in office to represent and serve the people, not berate and belittle them - no matter who they be.

I almost called bullsh*t when they said "never been heard of" until they said it was by a public official. You don`t send it to other party members and expect it to not get out. MAYBE if it was just to some very close, trustworthy family and friends, although that doesn`t make it okay. It just makes it semi-understandable.
