@student law, sorry I lashed out quite virulently at your comment, and your right, you never accused me of lying. But it comes back to the same question that has plagued us from day 1: What IS art? We may like to state what we think is NOT art, but it`s not as easy to define it. To em, this IS art, to others, it isn`t. Could the fact that it inflames our opinions make it art in itself?

I`ve got a basket of (unsorted) laundry I`ll let go for a hundred bucks.

It speaks to the relentless mechanization of both the modern world and the modern man. Right there, under the grey socks, you can hear the faint scream of a soul, as it cries out for gentle cycle, cold rinse, high spin.

Mastercard and VISA gladly accepted.

ehhh Obviously Arts subjective so don`t argue, but I would sure like to find the crowd of people who buys stuff like this and get into that scene. I would love to sell garbage with a clever name. But unfortunately in this case I think this is a well known artist and that is why he can get away with selling this. Sometimes the name means more than the piece.

Frenchmefren go away you are either trolling or a moron who has been taken in by modern "arts" bullpoo. Art needs EFFORT and needs to be IMPRESSIVE otherwise we all could do it, i couldnt paint a Picasso but i could stack some rubbish bags up hence this isnt art it is retardedness

I`d make a long comment about how none of you guys know poo about art... But I`m too lazy, and we`ve got a long way to go if you`re still at the "art needs effort and needs to be impressive to be art" level...

There was a gentleman that made himself somewhat renound doing things like this. I forget his name but he took it one step further. He would do things like go into a men`s restroom and with a labeler and put his name on a urinal and would say it`s art by him. He was making fun of silliness like this.

"Artists" that make "art" or "movies" that nobody understands consider everybody else an idiot because they think they understand something at a much deeper level. Lack of talent is no excuse for creating garbage, pun intended. I would only give this guy credit if he did that on purpose only to poke fun at the stupidity of much of the "modern art."

Hatface - i never said you were a liar. I think we should keep the "artsy" enterpretation on the art, not the comments, eh?

I just felt the need to ridicule something i find ridicoulous. Also there are may people out there working their ass of creating real art. Actors, musicians, writers, painters, sculptors... i`m sorry but i believe you CAN make art out of garbage. But that takes a hell of a lot more effort than to stack it up in a pile and take a picture of it.

"Nice try, hatface."
Nice Try? What, your now grading my attempt at describing about how I feel about this piece of `art`? Nice try at what?

"Are you sure it`s not a protest towards christmas consumerism - since it looks like a snow man? "
Let`s get one thing clear. I`m not an expert on art. I never said I was right, never even thought I could be `wrong`. I wrote what I felt when I looked at this piece. If you see a Snowman, and you see an attempt at criticising the absurd consumerism based around xmas, more power to you. That`s your interpretation.

"Art reviews. Anyone can make them"
Yes, of course they can! Who the hell do think makes them? Art isn`t a class system. It`s YOUR interpretation. No-one sees the a piece of art the same as the next person Any comment here will make that clear. Everyone has an opinion.

What I don`t understand is why you would respond thinking I was for some reason lying about what I th

Nice try, hatface.

Are you sure it`s not a protest towards christmas consumerism - since it looks like a snow man?

Also it seems to me that it resembles an ice cream. Italy as we know is the country of ice cream. AND the country of mafia garbage wars in Naples. This is nothing but a political statement!

Oh wait a minute i think the artist felt very lonely when he or she or he-she made this wonderful piece of art. They felt like garbage, jammed into a corner. Well - nobody puts "baby" in a corner.

Art reviews. Anyone can make them :-)

Most of these types of artist are allready rich. They are millionaire kids with little or no talent or other personal traits that allow them to produce something useful or beautiful by themselves. This typically "New York" art scene is just a bunch of silver-spoon up their a55 kids looking for a venue so it seems like they are achieving something. It is a form of compensation for their parents talent or hard work.

And guess who spends $10 000 on something like this? Yup... they buy it from each other. It`s a faked up job based upon a faked up talent.

This saddens me. I spend hours on most of my actual painted work because I get enjoyment out of it, and I like the way people who buy it _enjoy_ it and have something unique that they can hang on their wall and be happy with for years.

This, on the other hand, couldn`t have possibly taken more than an hour (and even that would be pathetic) and is virtually indistinguishable from pretty much any random collection of bagged junk in any random garage. That "artist" is laughing all the way to the bank for taking some fool for 10 grand. Quite literally, I would imagine.

Possibly a slight on the idea of consumerism and disposability in todays society. The idea that the object that is at the foundation of everything we have created, the one thing that we try desperately to escape, to burn to destroy and rid of, garbage, is beginning to seep into everyday life. Into every institution, into every building and every echelon of society is the monster we have created, that we have fed and unleashed and has now become inescapable. Rubbish, garbage. Crap.

The formation of the bags is almost a human form. Maybe it`s aim is to show to us that we are tuning into the thing we try to escape. Rubbish. The people we ignore in the street, the downtrodden and the poor, the human garbage, becoming garbage in our eyes.

Maybe a satire on the modern art form itself. To point out the arrogance, the hypocrisy and idiocy of post-modern art. To create the idea that art is no longer about form, but is about marketing. About not just creating, but selling.

All I had to do was see that this was from Phillip de Pury and Company. They sell a lot of absolute crap that they pass for "art" for outrageous amounts of money. It`s unbelievably ridiculous.

It seems some rich people will but anything they think is SUPPOSED to be meaningful...

Yup, anything can be considered art. Put it on a pedestal, frame it, press it to cd or vinyl or tape, put it in an art gallery, and it`s art. Well, that and establish a name for yourself in the artworld first and be ready to describe the significance of your pieces, whatever they may be.

I mean, I see how something like this can be made significant. Humans like to assign meaning to the meaningless, and many an artist is great at doing this creatively. But 10,000 dollars? Hah. Damn. Seriously. It must have really struck the person, and they`d have to be rich beyond avarice.

We need to start making an "art", of reviewing these things. We must show them what a real piece of poo looks like. Just walk up to one, drop trow and leave your review right in front.

I`m sure there is some interesting story behind what is in the bags. And, as much as it`s making me sound like an art snob, there was some attention paid to how the bags were stacked. It takes talent to make art look like mundane trash just as it takes talent to make it look like an immaculately painted canvas or something.

That`s my opinion anyway.
If I drop a bag of flour and some soup, it`s a mess. If an approved modern artist does exactly the same thing, it`s art. It`s wholly about approval from the fashionable.
See that right there is what I can`t stand. One day I will build a random art generator that will continuously produce hundreds and hundreds of unique combination of materials, through various methods and expressing underlying simplified ideas and ship them off to various recognized artists. Chances are something will be noticed as great and thus I`ll make sacks of cash.

Then, once I`m famous, I`ll reveal the source of the artwork to be a crude machine thus simultaneously insulting everyone.

postmodern theory of art: (pseudo-philosophical pretension)*(ego)-talent=art. It`s an unholy alliance between people with art degrees but no talent and their super-rich patrons who buy their poo in order to feel "cultured". The best part of this formula is that you get to criticize regular people who actually recognize you`re just a hack as being "anti-intellectual".

You need to be approved of by the "right" people. Modern art is wholly about approval by people with power, whom others will follow because they`re worried about being considered uncultured. It`s the same thing as the old story of the emperor`s new clothes.

If I drop a bag of flour and some soup, it`s a mess. If an approved modern artist does exactly the same thing, it`s art. It`s wholly about approval from the fashionable.
