How do you know that? I doubt the university would care.
Because universities are all about making money and they`re looking at a potential law suit from the family of the kid who was assaulted for laughing at the guard. Even if it doesn`t come to anything serious, the guard is now more of a liability than a benefit. Plus, like you said, he`s really fat. I don`t know if I`d call him slow though. Did you see how fast he barreled out of that cart towards the kid after crashing?

"The use, ownership and sale of skateboards were forbidden in Norway, during the period between 1978 and 1989. The ban was said to be due to the perceived high number of injuries caused by boards. The ban led skateboarders to construct ramps in the forest and other secluded areas to avoid the police."

Haha.. cracked me up. What a fascist gig that was. This must have been the most insane law ever passed in this country :-p

This is exactly why I hate many skaters...they intentionally go out looking for trouble like this and then act like the "victims" when they get in trouble. I wish the campus security guy had a taser or something! These jerks had it coming to them.

By the way, youtube "skater hit by car" to see plenty of examples of why skating in public is dangerous.

Damaged cars make it not just the skater`s problem.
Potential to cause a crash and hurt drivers makes it not just the skater`s problem.
Not just cars use the roads: hit a motorcyclist or a bicyclist and they`re just as badly hurt as the skater.

@IrishJesus

"skating is harmless was not directed at the physical risk of injury (a risk that exists in all extreme sports, and even in the all-american football) but that the actual act of skating in a secluded spot is no risk to anyone but themselves"

A footpath on a college campus is not a "secluded area".

And any area that has ANY foot traffic shouldn`t be used for an "extreme sport".

You misunderstand the concept of risk.

Risk = probability of happening x expected loss.

Probability may be low, but the expected loss could be considerably high; if someone gets knocked to the ground, serious injury or death may occur, especially if it is a small child, an elderly person, or someone who is otherwise infirm.

Bottom line, do it where you`ve been given permission.

Spg, that`s sadly true. America is sue happy. I was sued by a women i got in a wreck with for "mental anguish". The damage to here car was minuscule, costing less than $100 to fix, which my insurance paid for. But this is all a different problem....

IrishJesus, part of the problem is that if the skater does fall and break an arm they would probably try to sue the property owners. So it does not really matter if anyone is around or not.

And who cares if he has a camera. I wish the guard had a tazer.

Musuko:
I don`t condone going on private properties where it isn`t allowed and skating. However, my argument that skating is harmless was not directed at the physical risk of injury (a risk that exists in all extreme sports, and even in the all-american football) but that the actual act of skating in a secluded spot is no risk to anyone but themselves, a risk that all skaters learn pretty quickly while learning. Most people I know skate in very low to no pedestrian traffic areas, stopping if ANYONE is too close for comfort, and I hardly ever see skaters that deviate from that example. They were in the wrong for skating on private property without learning whether it was allowed there or not (as I said earlier, people skate all over my campus and no one dies tragic deaths or are tackled and beaten by security), but did you see anyone other than them and security? Skaters intentionally choose low traffic areas because they don`t want to hit anyone.

Fatass rent-a-cop should have got a beat down after throwing that punch.
I used to skate in the Midwest back in the 80`s. It wasn`t as socially acceptable back then. There was a lot more harassment. Let me tell you, a skateboard makes for a NASTY weapon.

Yes, he was wrong for taking the skateboard and /kinda/ for hitting the kid, but at that point the kid was essentially assaulting him. He`s just doing his job and they were not "just skateboarding on concrete." It is destruction of property and it doesn`t matter if they are students or not. A college campus is private property, you are allowed by the school to use it to get to class, not to grind on.

If it were a cop it would be a different story but that guy is a security guard. His badge doesn`t mean squat. He is a civilian and those guys just wanted their skateboard back. If he were a cop it wouldn`t be a good idea to try to get it back like that but this guy is a security guard flaunting the authority he thinks he has.

Security guards are private citizens and have no right whatsoever to confiscate property.

All I see is a bunch of hipster douchetards flaunting their semi"knowledge" of the law and harassing a security guard who`s only trying to do his job. He totally crosses the line, but nobody would say he wasn`t provoked. You don`t GRAB anything back from someone with a badge. You go the proper route and get it back. At that time, you can file a complaint if you feel you`ve been wronged. The guard says time and time again "how many times have I asked you guys to get off campus." If it`s posted policy, then they were totally wrong.

"The concept of telling someone to stop something harmless just because of one`s own pre-existing animosity towards a group is backward and immature."

But that`s just it: it`s not harmless.

The skaters can injure themselves all they like...that`s their lookout. But doing it in an inappropriate place, without permission, on someone else`s property, on a PEDESTRIAN FOOTPATH, could very well lead to injuries if they collide with someone trying to walk along the path...you know, actually using it for its intended purpose.

Ever had someone collide with you at speed and knock you down so you crack your skull against the concrete?

I should hope you haven`t.

It is NOT harmless. Not there, anyway.

"There on a campus that`s not private property."

Umm, yes it is.

A college/university is as privately-owned as any other business.

And like any other private property, if you`re asked to leave and don`t obey, you`re trespassing.

Some parts of the US allow you to use some pretty strong methods against trespassers.

Wow, what a bag of douche.

I`m not a skater but I really don;t see why people have an issue with it. I used to let kids skate at the last place I managed, I just told them not to be a pain to the customers. If anyone ever complained I just went out and told them that they had to take off for a bit because of a complaint and there was never any hassle.

People are way too drating uptight.

@Lucas: Unless you know what state and campus this is, you can`t know what authority the guard has to touch, detain, etc.

@nny: A campus is absolutely private property, and if you don`t have permission to be there you can be asked to leave. If they were in fact students there that gives them the right to be present but not do whatever they want.

As for signs, there could be a 10 foot one right behind them. Just because it`s not on the clip doesn`t mean it isn`t there. It could also be a campus policy that every student knows. Do we really need signs for everything?? Don`t pee on the flowers? Don`t throw food in the cafeteria? No cell phone conversations during class?

Was there anyone else around them? I don`t know. How do you? Did someone complain? Or did the guard just happen to roll up on them? I don`t know. How do you?

Ok, I just have to say to those that say "We don`t go to your skatepark and ______", how many skateparks do you think there are? In my old hometown, there was one, finished construction in 2009. You know what almost all of that skatepark was? Vert (bowls/ramps). 85% of skaters are street (grinds, kicktricks, manuals, gaps, etc), which almost every skate park puts on the burner, making most parks worthless. In my new town, there is NO skate park, and I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. While there are parks, baseball fields, golf clubs, tennis courts, pools, and plenty of almost all other sports and recreational centers, there is no skate facility. It shut down because it was too expensive, ill-maintained, and again, mostly vert. The concept of telling someone to stop something harmless just because of one`s own pre-existing animosity towards a group is backward and immature. Trust me, I`ve tried skating (I`m no good at it), and I would love for there to be a decent spot to

As much as I think it must be really drating annoying to always ask people to leave and nothing to ever come of it, this isn`t the way to deal with it. He doesn`t have the authority to do so, he`s a security guard, but that doesn`t give him the right to assault or steal.

He should have asked them to leave first (which he may have done off camera) and then called the police when they did not.

There on a campus that`s not private property. I don`t like skaters either but the guard is the one at fault here his job is to only make observations and call a real cop if he sees something the security guard was out of line doin what he did and even if those kids fought back it would be self defense because he hit first

They should make a tape called skater tape. It will be similar to fly paper and you can put it on walkways so when they skate over it the tape grabs the wheels of the board and send the skater flying off his board to injure themselves somewhere getting rid of the skater and entertaing us all at once.

Anyone trying to justify this:

Why should ANYONE have to put up with people engaging in a SPORT on their FOOTPATHS or CAR PARKS?

You don`t see people turning up to play tennis in the carpark of your local supermarket, do you?

Either do it at an appropriate venue, or do it at home.

And I`ve no sympathy for those who claim "but there isn`t anywhere for us to do it". Either do something about it (lobby to get a skate park set up, hire out a sports hall or similar space), or just suck it up and realise that sometimes you just can`t always do certain things where you are. It`s difficult to surf in Colorado, for instance. And you`re going to struggle to be able to engage in your love for cross-country skiing in Florida.

As for the security guard. Why does it seem that many of the "rent a cops" and even regular policemen are rather... big? Here in Finland it is almost a rule that you need to be fit to be able to pose as an authority figure.

One more thing I would like to mention. Many towns and cities do have skateparks, but most are inadequate or too expensive to attend frequently. Those towns that do not have a place to skate usually look down on the sport as a whole. There is an obvious stigma involved with skating, and society shows it.

Plenty of skater-hate. It`s true, TONS of skaters are absolute poo. However, a few of my good friends (and my one best friend) would be considered skaters. They are not agressive, punk-to-be-punk morons. They are not hateful or disrespectful. They are often told to "move on", and they comply. The stereotype that all skaters are smart-ass douches is unfair to the many who do it to relax and get in physical activity (and trust me, it DOES require stamina to do). The problem is, we have to make a lot of assumptions about this video. 1) Were the skaters there after being told to leave? 2) Was this really their first offense on campus? Plenty of people skate on my campus and no one is bothered by it. 3) Did the security give the group ample time to vacate before deeming it necessary to take the skateboard? The list can go on, but the point is we simply do not KNOW who is fully at fault. All I saw was an angry security guard and a group of guys with skateboards duke it out.

the skateboarder deserved to get punched in his face and he should have to pay for the damages that the golf cart received. You don`t take a skateboard away from a security guard who has previously asked you to leave the property. You don`t rip it out of his hand either. If someone is that aggressive with me i would probably attack them for my own safety. Those skateboarders were at fault for sure.

I`m gonna attempt to piece together the incident before the camera started rolling, based on what I know about skateboarders. The security guard asked them kindly to leave at first, and of course the skateboarders want to look cool, so they say something unnecessary like "drat you pig" and attempt to continue skateboarding. This continues for a few more minutes as security guard becomes more and more pissed. Tape begins rolling.

*sigh* yet again I have this feeling of being so absurdly high above this sort of petty conflict.

Nevertheless, osiris is right, we don`t know enough to pass judgment.

The skaters were clearly being assh*les for not leaving, abusing the guard and recording the thing. Why would you care to record that if not for the popularity of other petty fools like yourself?

The guard was at fault for taking the board, as it`s not his property, however we don`t know the background. They could have been told not to skate there many times. We just don`t know. He was also at fault for being fat, slow, weak and thus insufficient for what he`s supposed to be doing.

Unfortunately most boarders don`t give a poo what they tear up in the process of their `fun`, most communities (even small ones now) have designated skate parks for such recreation.

Most campus police do have arrest and seizure authority as bombaytech said. If security says for you to leave, you leave, quietly, don`t argue and don`t cuss them out, they are doing their job.

In short don`t be a punk or your `rebel cred` may get you thrown in jail.

Actually, contrary to popular belief, security guards and loss prevention DO have real power in some states. Some state laws actually provide for store/entity security staff to PHYSICALLY DETAIN you if necessary under certain circumstances. This of course is one of those things most people get to court and then go "OH" about.

But regardless of the legality of this situation here, it`s still funny to watch him push the kid off the board.

The biggest problem with these vids, is that all we ever get to see is an enraged security guard acting the fool... How about letting us see what transpired BEFORE the guard starts acting like a complete ass...

There are two sides to every story...

What provoked the guard to actually try to take the kids board away?

I`ve worked security at enough concerts to know that there`s always one mouthy little poo in every group.

Why does his obesity have anything to do with it?? Replace "fat" with the n-word. Do you feel comfortable saying that?

Yeahhh, im just going to guess that area was a no skate zone which means the skaters shouldnt have been there in the first place. Also, very stereotypical skaters. I almost forgot why I dislike them.
Last, taking the skateboard? Maybe if he were to give it back to them at the place`s entrance or something to make sure they go, but not just take it.

What a fat idiot. He`s lucky they didn`t over power him and beat his ass. Regardless of the trespassing he can`t steal their stuff. What a moron.

yes, lets rage the skaters because their skateboards are ruining concrete. While we`re at it, lets rage winter and the cities because their salt and trucks are making pot holes and costing the cities over $100,000 in maintenance every year.

In think in the fight in douchebag vs. douchebag, I think the security guard may be in the right here; this was probably the whiniest bunch of skaters I`ve ever seen.

"You`re gonna end up on the news" Somehow I doubt the news would give two sh*ts about a security guard taking some kid`s skateboard.
