This elephant, Anne, has since been removed from the Circus and been rehomed at Longleat Safari Park. Not the same as a life spent in the wild, but a BIG improvement on doing tricks all day every day while riddled with arthritis.

F*cking scum of the human race. I hope each of those f*cking sh*thead thunderc*nts gets violently ill and dies slowly and very, very painfully. No animal deserves such treatmeant, be it an elephant or a human being.

I tried being a vegan. It went on for 2 months. Couldn`t hack it. My craving for beef was too much. I was climbing the walls and was at the store and saw the NY Strip.,,,,, It was delicious.

umm netro what does animal husbandry have to do with this? raising animals for yourself is different than factory farming, (still not warranted IMO), which is where people in developed countries get 99% of their meat. And i can personally guarantee that they will not show you the actual killing of the animal, since they hide it from the rest of the workers because of the psychological effects it has on the employees. Yes we are at the top of the food-chain and i would consider that a responsibility not an open door to torture and abuse a living being that can feel pain. your arguement is irrelevant. We are promoting unnecessary torture, abuse and mass-genocide of animals because we think they are tasty. and the reason we think they are tasty is because your parents fed it to you. but it doesnt make sense for your body, for the environment, for our use of resources or for the animal, obviously.

@imnakdjumpme as I said before ..there is a food chain, and we`re on top of it. Animals eat animals, it`s how the whole life cycle works. Nothing is wrong with people eating animals or raising them specifcally to eat them. Animal Husbandry is a big deal, with the fact that animals MUST be treated humanely all the way up too the slaughter house. It`s the few rotten apples in the bunch that give the rest of them a bad name. I`ve contacted a local meat processing plan about their practices and they were MORE than willing to invite me down to their place of business and actually give me a tour of their facility and the entire process, as well as their policies on who they except their beef from.

I urge you all to do the same thing if you eat meat and care about animals like I do. Nothing wrong with eating meat, but if you truly care for animals you will make the smart choice about who you purchase from.

Its great to see the outrage. Truly. But how many of you are vegan? im just thinking about the billions of farm animals that have much worse lives, versus what, a few hundred or thousand elephants worldwide. I just wish we were woken up by this more often i guess.

@dude21862004 the mental anguish at being tied up and chained to one spot like it is, is enough, let alone the beatings.

I eat meat, love it ..I understand that there`s a food chain and we`re at the top. There is no need to torture them before they`re already eventual death.

aahhh, for FU*K SAKES ..I wouldn`t think twice about murdering these mother f*ckers, and if you knew me ..you`d know that to be pretty extreme. It`s clear that these people have no morals, wether or not they were instructed on how to train animals in this manner. I don`t mind Zoo`s or Circus`, but if they treat animals in this sense then they need to be stopped entirely.

It looks pretty painful to us, and I`m sure it is moderately painful to the Elephant, but Elephants have really thick, tough skin and feel pain a lot less than we do. To that Elephant those vicious blows would probably feel more like a hard pinch (excluding the arthritic leg and the trunk.) Doesn`t excuse the person, but at least you can feel slightly better knowing it`s not quite so bad painful for the Elephant.

I was working in an Int`l wildlife Park back in the early 80`s in Texas. The staff member in charge of the elephants used to beat the crap out of them. Pissed me off royally. One day I was working inside taking the usual lab requirements for check up of the head DVM there. Usually the elephants are calm due to the vets being gentle. However as I was drawing blood, that jackass walked in. Right then the whole mood changed from the male bulls through the babies. it became quite intense. he then proceeded then to get them to cooperate with an ax handle. Which I proceeded to yank it out of his hand and threaten him with it. Needless to say I was fired for such.

One of the things I told him during the confrontation. That he better watch his back because the male bull will kill him. One day on the local news. Apparently he forgot to watch his back. He was hitting the male while trying to load him in the truck. Got caught inside. 5 minutes later he was no more. Ax handle beside him.

And my friends wonder why I have very little use for the human race. Every time I turn around, I see something that either sickens, or saddens me. And the really crappy part? 99% of it DOESN`T HAVE TO HAPPEN! It`s people hurting someone or something needlessly. It`s the frelling 21st century, and we still abuse anyone or anything weaker; hate people because of the color of their skin, religion, sexual orientation, etc; molest children/commit rape. We`re frelling neandrethals! To quote one of my favorite bands: "Let`s leave it all to the roaches. Mom`s gonna fix it all soon and put it back the way it oughta be."

Australia banned exotic animals in circuses back in the late 1980`s, as a direct result of the continual cruelty of one particular one, Silvers Circus. Later, they extended that ban to ALL animals on a local government level (meaning local councils decide whether all animals are banned, or whether dogs and horses are allowed).

As a result, the circuses in Australia SUCK BIGTIME. Seriously. I can go to the local gym to see amazing acrobatics and it doesn`t cost me $70 a ticket. I`m not trying to put the performers at the circus down, they are truly amazing examples of what humans can do, but without animals, circuses are just not the same.

Michael Vick mistreated dogs so we should ban dog ownership?"

Are you serious? That`s like saying, "Oh, Adolph Hitler hated Jews so we should kick them out of our neighborhood." What kind of crap logic is that? This animal was abused and it continues today. To turn a blind, elitist eye to it is just as bad as beating the animal itself. Damn this circus and damn the individuals that defend it and its practices. I`d love to hit those a******s with a pitchfork and see how their uneducated a***s like it.

There is so much worse out there, I don`t want to sound too super douchy but I worked in Thailand for a while with elephants and the reserve owners showed me footage of the breaking in process at other tourist resorts... They`re put in cages no bigger than their body, tied to the walls and beaten and stabbed into submission. This video is very tame compared to what happens in other areas... Not to say I wouldn`t beat the poo out of any of the men shown in this video.

@CrakrJak- Animal abuse in circuses is a widespread problem. But that`s not why I think that using wild animals in circuses should be banned. There is no way to use these animals in circuses without cruelty. Elephants naturally live across wide territories. Keeping them couped up and forcing them to perform night after night is, in and of itself, cruel. The same thing goes for lions, bears, orcas and dolphins (like at sea world).

There`s an entire culture in the circus world that evolved a system to abuse elephants, this is not a rare occurrence. And there really ISN`T a humane way to make an elephant perform in a circus, nothing about elephants makes them capable of living that kind of life without extreme force. There simply is no such thing as a circus that has elephants and treats them humanely.

I don`t believe all circus animals are treated this way, The way this elephant was being treated is bad and the people that mistreated her should be prosecuted.

But to ban all animals in all circuses because a few are mistreated is going too far. What about the other trainers that treat their animals with care and love ? They`d lose their livelihood and the circus would be worse off for it.

The really sad part is, Anne (the elephant) WAS able to defend herself... before they broke her will. Aside from the beatings, the process a lot of trainers use to `break` the poor creatures is just as cruel and heartbreaking. F*ck the circus. If I want to see an elephant I`ll go to a Zoo where at least they are respected, or to the elephant`s natural habitat, where it has just as much a chance to kill me as I have to kill it. Videos like this are a grim reminder of how the human species doesn`t deserve this planet and all it`s wonder and beauty.

While I think it`s a step in the right direction to ban using wild animals in travelling circuses, the number of animals abused for entertainment is nothing compared to the number of animals abused to produce food.

I`m not against eating meat at all- I`m not even a vegetarian- but it is possible to raise animals for meat without horribly abusing them. There`s also the problem with the vast quantity of antibiotics being dumped into farm animals is a contributing factor to the development of antibiotic resistant microbes.

Beaten seems like too harsh of a word for what was occurring in that video - not that I don`t think those people should have the same pitchfork swung at their legs and see how they feel. I also feel like it`s hard to judge everyone based off these clearly bad apples. It`s hard for me to believe that all circus people regularly abuse their animals. Whether or not it`s ethical to keep certain wild animals (like elephants) solely for performance is another issue entirely.

All the while humans are being killed unjustly elsewhere in the world.

It doesn`t matter why they were hitting her, there is never a reason to abuse an animal. I don`t care what kind of information there is, she was chained up and had no way of getting away from them so no matter the reason it is disgusting that someone could do that to an animal. There are humans being killed all over the world for no reason but at least humans have a chance of protecting themselves, animals can`t protect themselves like we can. I would like to beat them with whatever they were using to hit her with and see how they feel about it. Ok, I am done ranting now.

@ LycanMutt:

depending on what state you`re in, there are DEFINITELY animal cruelty laws. For instance, in Georgia it`s illegal to neglectfully leave your dog outside in the heat with no shelter or water--that`s a felony punishable my a stint in jail.

no matter how many laws there are, it will never stop. people know they can go to prison for life or get the death penalty for murder, but they do it anyway. no matter how stiff you make the punishment, non-nice individuals out there will always commit the crime.

on a different note, someone needs to beat the tar out of all those circus workers and chain them up 24/7. see how they like it.

Nope people don`t care if an animal is abused as long as it`ll shut their kids up. There SHOULD be animal cruelty laws. If people don`t stand up and say, "HEY, you kick that dog one more time I`m calling the Humane Society, and you`re going to get a fine, or thrown into jail." then nobody will. We need animal abuse laws otherwise there will be no other consequences for their cruelty.

im guessing watever they were hitting the elephant with, it had to be heavy right? Because elephants are pretty tough, but the elephant did twitch when she was hit so im pretty sure it hurt.
Poor animals. I stopped wanting to go to circuses when i started to realize that those things travel everywhere so it`s unlikely the animals have decent treatment.
People should just stop going to these kinds of circuses.

At first, I was prepared to scoff at whatever the animal rights wackos were going to show in this video - and even when it first began I wondered if such a big animal just needs a firmer push to move it out of the way. However, it quickly became apparent, at least from the footage shown, that there was little rhyme or reason to the treatment of the animal.

I wouldn`t call this `graphic` per se, but I left the video with a much different interpretation than I expected.

You don`t necessarily need a ban on `wild` animals in circuses, but you definitely need inspection and prosecution for cases of abuse. Not only as a punitive measure for cases like this, but as a deterrent for others.
