If animals are people too and that is why we shouldn`t eat them, then why are those "people" allowed to eat other "people"? Why is a lion allowed to chase down a gazelle and rip to to shreds with its teeth? Why is a cat allowed to catch a mouse, snap its spine, and proceed to play with it like a toy? I just don`t understand the "logic".

Actually it is our development of agriculture that enabled the development of large populations, which lead to culture, which lead to where we are today.

In fact Neanderthals, evolved with larger brains, and only ate meat, they became extinct and we survived.

But who cares? I love tasty animals, and I like many vegetarians. Do we really need to be so sensitive that we hate each other because of our diets?

I could hardly pay attention to this guys obvious arguments, he`s so sick and sweaty looking!

Animals may not be people. They`re obviously not, but we should treat them respectfully. They can feel pain and they DO have feelings. Which is why I eat humanely raised meat and dairy. I don`t want to eat a chicken that spent its whole life sitting in it`s own feces because it`s too crowded for it to stand, so it just sits there being chronically overfed. That bird is stressed out and nowhere near as tasty as a humanely raised bird.

The only things I will not eat are animals that seem to have some sort of personality, which extends to cats, dogs, and some humans. People argue for rabbits, but let`s face it, they twitch their noses and if it weren`t for bugs bunny then they`d be screwed as well. People who feel sorry for cows and chickens are nuts, and dolphins - your safe for now, but just barely...

    1. We are the dominant species on this planet
    2. Humans aren`t made to only eat vegetables (teeth are all wrong yo, go check it out)
    3. Animals are food because that`s the way it goes. If we had evolved to not eat meat, then we wouldn`t be having this conversation.

The "we`re made to eat meat" argument isn`t valid.

Firstly, we weren`t "made" for anything. We don`t have a design specification we have to live up to.

Secondly, having the ability to do something does not mean that you must do something. The fact we have canines in our mouth means that eating meat is an option for us, not a requirement.

Thirdly, don`t say "yo". You`re not a "gangsta".

    My statement of position:

I`m vegetarian. I happily share the dinner table with friends and family who eat meat, and I cook meat for guests. It doesn`t disgust me. It doesn`t offend me. It doesn`t upset me. I have no difficulty in eating meat whatsoever. I just choose not to do it.

Why some people get so uppity about vegetarians and vegans, I just don`t know. Do you scream and rant at people who don`t like to eat chocolate? Do you threaten to eat two chocolate bars for every bar they don`t eat? Do you scrounge for biological justification to imply that we`re "made" to eat chocolate, and how dare they express a personal choice rather than obey your idea of what they are "designed" to do?

In any case, forget the argument. It`s pointless. With the human population still rising, and food supply struggling ever more to keep up, we may find ourselves all priced out of uneconomical food sources like meat.

I was reading your post with actual conviction, then I noticed you had a dig at me for saying "yo" and I realised I must be dealing with a real intellectual superpower ^^.

I liked how you can`t let anything slip by, sorry if that offends you, let me put it another way:

Vegetarians are going against scientific studies and data collected over the last few decades that conclusively prove an all-vegetarian diet cannot provide you with the sustainable nutrients you get naturally from meat. Sure, we have a choice, but we are omnivores so have evolved to incorporate this into our society. Meat is good for you, so are vegetables, and just like a diet consisting entirely of meat is bad for you, so is a diet consisting entirely of vegetables. It`s a healthy balance that`s required, not either extreme. This is why vegetarians will never get exactly what they need naturally, and why being "antsy" has been linked to vegetarianism in serve

In defense of the vegetarians, If this was true then vegetarians would be unfit or deprived in some way. I haven`t read the studies but what you say contradicts observation.

Sorry, to provide a little more explanation:

A lot of vegetarians experience deficiencies in zinc, calcium, Vitamin D, Iron, Vitamin B-12, and protein thanks to their diet, which requires supplements to be taken to ensure balanced nutrition. People that enjoy a balanced diet with meat and vegetables get these nutrients from meat. The main problem is protein as it can`t really be provided by supplement alone, which is why vegetarians are usually much thinner and leaner than people that enjoy a balanced diet. Also, carnivores digestive tracts are short whereas animals that eat grass etc have long tracts to digest the harder fibrous vegetation better. Humans have a mixture, so whilst we can digest vegetables we don`t get as much benefit as we do from eating both meat and veg.

    Humans are food too!
BUT: -cultures that allowed cannibalism generally went extinct a looooong time ago.
-there`s a few nasty-bad diseases that could be transmitted through cannibal practices, thus wiping out whole tribe of cannibals in one dinner.

So that is why few creatures commit cannibalism, and we humans avoid it.
Eating OTHER animals is fine though!

Firstly, if you believe in evolution.. We actually have been made to do a lot of cool things. Higher cognitive processing is one of them. Apply that to an innate hunger drive, we get hunting and farming. Apply the mind telling us we`re in danger, and we started to run from things, and got really good at running for a long time. This evolved into the french.

Now if you believe in creation... Dammit, god, why didn`t he give us manuals?

Secondly, the fact that we have molars which are good for grinding down bits of plants makes it an option, not a requirement, right? Also, a fun fact is that our incisors are really awesomely good for insects and other critters with exoskeletons. But hey, you don`t have to eat it. In fact, you sir seem to have pointed a good option out. Why not just starve? Eating is a choice! Don`t be a slave to what the "food eating evil government man" has to say. Starve yourself and be different :D

I couldn`t let the "yo" slip by unchallenged.

"data collected over the last few decades that conclusively prove an all-vegetarian diet cannot provide you with the sustainable nutrients you get naturally from meat"

The smartarse answer to that: then where did the herbivorous animals from which we get the meat get the nutrients?

The real answer to that: everything you get from meat you can get from other sources; just not always as efficiently (but in equal measure, often more healthily).

They are using sex now to sell their ads because so few people even pay attention to them! hahaha that is sad! I love meat, by the way...I could never be a vegetarian. but I also eat it in moderation because meat alone is not healthy. Follow the diets of the early Hunter Gatherers or indigenous tribes, they primarily eat vegetables, fruits and beans but when they do get meat OH MAN is it gooooooood ;D

Correct. You can live entirely on meat and/or other animal-sourced foods if you so desired. Some cultures do exactly that.

"Also, a fun fact is that our incisors are really awesomely good for insects and other critters with exoskeletons."

Wouldn`t it be canines that do that? Incisors are best for cutting, not peircing.

False sir. Canines are good for the grip, rip, and tear. Incisors help with this but if you ever look at them you notice that they have a flat, narrow, long surface on which they meet if you teeth are properly aligned. This is seen is many animals that mainly eat insects. It appears that it is quite useful to separate a tough shell by being able to apply force concentratedly on the weak spots or joints.

Suppliments AREN`T required, if you eat right.

No matter how well you eat, you need either animal products or supplements. At the very least, you need them for B12. Which is essential for life.

You can get it from the dung of some animals in some circumstances, which I guess is probably an acceptable animal product for a vegetarian, but personally I`d prefer supplements.

B12 supplements are made by bacteria in factory labs, so even a vegan should be able to accept that.

Someone is bound to say that B12 is in brewer`s yeast. Sure it is - when the manufacturers put it there.

The rest, yes, you can get from even a vegan diet if you know what you`re doing and you take enough care (though calcium in particular will be a problem), but there are no vegetable sources of B12 usable to humans. Unless a cow has pooped on them.

Apply the mind telling us we`re in danger, and we started to run from things, and got really good at running for a long time. This evolved into the french.

Who have fought more wars than probably any country on Earth and won most of them. Can you find any example of the French surrendering other than WW2? That was down to a political failure, not a military one. Many French soldiers who could make the journey retreated to Britain and joined the British military to carry on fighting. Large numbers of French people worked for the resistance, either undercover (and under constant threat of torture and death) or openly where geography made it possible (the Maquis).

The last time the French won a war was in the 18th century... and that is only because their enemy was also French. Just sayin.

This was funny as fcuk. But a serious point- animals might not be people, but there`s no reason to believe that they don`t suffer pain the same as people. I`m not against eating meat, but the animals we eat do deserve to be treated humanely.

Obviously animals aren`t people, but as a meat eater who recently watched "Meat Video: What the meat industry doesn`t want you to see", I am seriously off meat for a while o.o Meat Video

You can get B12 from dairy. So while this is a problem for vegans, it is not for vegetarians; and the statement from Mildcorma was:

"Long story short: If being a VEGETARIAN provided you with everything you needed, then supplements wouldn`t be required." (capitalisation emphasis mine).

Vegetarians don`t need suppliments for B12 if they are eating dairy, and it was vegetarians that Mildcorma and I were talking about, not vegans.

    @Musuko42:

Not all VEGETARIANS are lacto-ovo VEGETARIANS. LActo-ovo VEGETARIAN is a subset of VEGETARIAN. Since you and Mildcorma were talking about VEGETARIANS without any qualification about what kind of VEGETARIAN you were referring to, I took it as a general reference that covered all VEGETARIANS. If you only meant to refer to some VEGETARIANS, you should have said so.

    Vegetarians don`t eat animal flesh.
Vegans don`t eat any animal products.

You were talking about vegans, and you know it.

You got caught out being dumb, and you`re trying to back peddle to cover yourself. And in doing so, you end up looking even dumber.

    It`s pretty funny, actually.

Wow, honestly didn`t know people still cared about Maddox. I stopped caring about him in 2005.

I`m going to say what i always do on topics like this. I`m a vegetarian. I hate PETA. They`re a bunch of hypocritical, brainwashing, idiots. I think people should have the right to choose their own diets, which is why I don`t try to tell people that vegetarianism is a "superior" diet. I also hate it when people try to convince me that vegetarianism is wrong. No diet is superior to the other. Eating meats has just as many benefits as not eating meat.

It`s not my fault that you don`t know enough about vegetarians or vegans. Your definitions are wrong. Why don`t you go to a vegan or vegetarian site and educate yourself rather than continuing to be wrong?

    Here, I`ll help you:

Vegan: Does not use any animal product in any way. It is *not* limited to eating. For example, a vegan will not wear leather shoes.

Vegetarian: Various subsets. Some will not eat any animal products (but might still use animal products in other ways, like those leather shoes). Some will not eat animal flesh but will eat other animal products. They are often referred to as lacto-ovo vegetarians. Some vegetarians will eat fish but not land animals, which seems like an odd distinction to make.

You`re criticising me for being right because you don`t know enough about the subject to know that you`re wrong.

    That makes me laugh.

    At you.

I`ve been a vegetarian since I was 12 years old. Not once have I ever related them to humans, and I never will. I have much more intelligent argument than that. I mind my own business about my own diet unless someone asks me, unlike PETA.
