I don`t understand 4/20 people saying that it should be recognized as a holiday. Its illegal and going around saying "happy 4/20" or "have you celebrated yet?" just makes you look like a complete and total douche.

When employers start firing people for getting traffic citations, then you can tell me it`s about a willingness to break the law.

As an Irishman I feel compelled to ask. When did Americans start saying "St. Patties Day"? Even "St Patty`s Day" is silly but "Patties"? WTF? Weird Americans are weird. It`s St. Paddy`s day or St. Patrick`s Day. Enjoy your Fourth of Jilly celebrations this year and Tanya`s Giving.

AnImbroglio, that argument would make a lot of sense if employers were a branch of the police or judiciary, but they aren`t. Your argument would apply a lot better to police randomly stopping people in the street and drug testing them for no reason without any suspicion. Which probably wouldn`t be allowed. So why should it be allowed when employers replace the police?

Angilion... This has nothing to do with the effects of pot. This has nothing to do with it being more or less dangerous than cigarettes or alcohol. This has to do with a willingness to break the law. Both the US law and your employers regulations. If you are stupid enough to break both of these, you deserve to be fired. Simple. Should it be legal? Of course it should. Anyone with a brain knows this. But it`s not. I`m not saying don`t do it... But don`t whine when you get busted, either.

This is why you should not take off work for 4/20. Everyone knows why you`re gonna.

Reminds me of my last two drug tests. Thermacare heat wrap, a condom full of my uncle`s piss (the first time, a coworker`s the second). A needle slipped in the pants, and my incredible charm getting the ladies not to follow me for once.

During the test run I was testing the strength of the condom and POP! My uncle had just indirectly pissed all over me. Not my proudest moments, but funny nonetheless. And blah blah blah pot is bad, whatever. I drink on avg once a month, have never even attempted any other drug, and rarely even take Ibuprofen.

But, for the record a "pot holiday" makes about as much sense as Cinco or St. Patties day being excuses to drink.

Random drug tests are particularly unfair for cannabis because they are deliberately testing for what they know to be utterly irrelevant to the job. The tests don`t test if you *are* stoned, they test if you *were* stoned.

It`s like sacking someone because they were drunk the previous week while they were on holiday. It`s fundamentally unfair.

@DShephard It won`t of course, because most employers are too stupid to know that on average workers who police themselves and have greater decision making responsibility are generally happier more productive employees, but it is still true non the less.

Or were you referring to my strategy to avoid drug testing? (Which I could actually pass right now, not so much two and a half years ago.) I`d give it a shot. If your in the hospital you can`t be in work, and ideally when you go back the next day you`ll be clean. They might be suspicious but you also might get away with it.

if you need to take 4/20 off instead of working your 9-5 job, you`re pathetic. there`s always after work, you know.
as far as the drug testing goes, that is just uncalled for. I can understand an initial drug screen as a term of employment, but after the hire without any incidents? horrible.

...I suppose if I wanted to keep my job, then I would go to the hospital for something or other during the wee hours of Thursday morning. Then not go in that day, get a note, and chug pee cleaner like a champ!

I bet this is a joke. If not I`d just come in on Thursday and hand in my resignation. No point in getting fired for a failed drug test. Besides, if you do your job really well 99.9% of the time and you want to use a personal day to have a little fun, in the privacy of your own home, then that is really none of their business. It obviously hasn`t effected their performance at work. So they should stop acting like big brother and let their employees have a little fun, something the manager obviously never has! Better for the work environment!

myrtheus... i agree that if you know it`s a law and willingly break it you can`t exactly cry about getting caught, but to say "right or wrong doesn`t matter" is pretty irrational. And further more, I`ve always found "grow up" is pretty much the adult version of "you`re a doo doo head". It`s simply an ad hominem attack when you don`t have anything insightful to add :)

myrhteus, pot IS illegal, and I don`t encourage anyone to break the law, but that doesn`t mean that the law shouldn`t be questioned. Educate yourself on the many benefits of marijuana legalization before you make assumptions about people needing to "grow up." Legalization would create jobs, improve our health, and greatly benefit the economy.

Right or wrong and comparing it to booze does not matter. The point of the matter is that pot is illegal. Like it or not, it is against the law. People willing to break the law do not have a right to cry about it when they are caught. If you want to keep your job, don`t break the law. If you want to laugh at the drug tests... don`t break the law. Pot was fine in high school, but pretty pointless after you`re an adult. Grow up already.

"random drug tests" are innately pointless and I`ve never understood the tradition. The fact that it`s "random" implies that you haven`t done anything wrong at work or given any indication that you`re doing something wrong, but they`re going to test you anyway. Call out sick all the time, miss shifts, get complaints filed against you? By all means, drug test... but randomly? It`s always nice to know you can be a raging drunk and beat the hell out of your wife and kids but if you smoke a joint you can be randomly fired from work. And yes, I`m bitter that I can`t smoke pot because of my job!

@zombunny well when you are hired on the company as an employee, They usually drug test initially, and maybe once a year after that, I agree I dont think they should be able to but the fact of the matter is that they can and is specified in those documents u signed at a form of orientation, It is the Insurance stipulation form of the company`s insurance provider,Basically stating that if you are injured on the job you are required to a drug test and if u test pos. then the liability is on you, as well as random drug test.. So as much as you might think its wrong, its not... and you dont have to sign those forms if you feel so strongly about it but you will also be a brokeass!

If someone wishes to take one day holiday time to go and smoke themselves into a stupor it is not the employers concern. If they pull a sickie to do so it is the employers concern- I would just book the day off well in advance.

@Mr_Pedo_Bear, I get that. I don`t think people should take time off work to smoke marijuana. However, I`m also against employee drug testing because I think it`s an invasion of privacy, unless there is a legitimate legal concern. What employees do on their time off--regardless of why they were granted that time off--is no one`s business but their own.

@zombunny you`re paid to do a job not make an excuse and not turn up. The company loses money when you are not there, both in your pay and loss of earnings from you. They are authorising legitimate reasons but don`t want to authorise pot smokers perfectly reasonable of the company.

"It had nothing to do with a police code -- though the San Rafael part was dead on. Indeed, a group of five San Rafael High School friends known as the Waldos - by virtue of their chosen hang-out spot, a wall outside the school - coined the term in 1971."

Today is 4/20/11 or 4/20 a date and a time celebrated by potheads. April 20th is the potheads holiday, and luckily for me I did not have to ask off because we got hit by a freak snow storm last night so no work today for me.

"If you are showing up for work (i.e. the company`s business) under the influence of some sort of substance, it most definitely IS the company`s business."

If they`re taking the day off, they`re not using drugs on company time.

"It`s the "making up excuses to avoid showing up at work, because you got high last night" that`s the problem."

I don`t think this happens often, due to the fact that there`s no such thing as a weed hangover. People show up late for work because of drinking the night before more often than smoking pot.

It`s not the "using drugs when not at work" that`s the problem.

It`s the "making up excuses to avoid showing up at work, because you got high last night" that`s the problem.

Gerry1of1-"drug testing... another case of people getting up in your business. control freaks and fun police everywhere you go"

If you are showing up for work (i.e. the company`s business) under the influence of some sort of substance, it most definitely IS the company`s business. It has to do with liability and litigation. YOU are there to work for THEM. THEY are not there to give YOU a job.

As an example: Say someone partakes of 4/20 day, arrives to work and gets in an accident in a company vehicle. EVEN if it was the other party’s fault, you WILL be given a blood test, and any foreign substance will almost guarantee a multi-million dollar verdict against your company? Now, do you think that is something your company would like to avoid? Yes? Then what you partake of is their business.

Don’t want them to ‘be in your business’? Then quite working at their business.

Really. Everything was going swimmingly well at your company, and now you`re suddenly worried that all of these people are going to start using, for the first time, today, so you have to nip it in the bud.

That`s pretty proactive of you....
