It uses a paper "belt" the goes around the metal blade but doesn`t move, in the same way tank treads don`t "move" when they`re touching the ground. The paper tread just sort of rolls underneath the ketchup while the blade actually lifts it up.

@the hitcher: nope, its a `fabric` / `sheet` fixed at the top and sliding out under the bottom, the sauce isnt sliding but simply moving along on it.

it`s not made for cleaning spills. It`s made to transfer viscous liquids, gels, and anything else prone to deformation when manipulated.

that`s good and all, but how does it work on carpet?

This isn`t a cleaning device. It`s most likely for food decoration.

It almost looks like it`s heated, towards the end the thin parts of the "mess" seems died out.

@ edana42: There`s more to it than that. It has to be coated with silicone or something similar.

"WHY!! WHY!! I really see no practical use for this"

Easy. Food decorating. You lay out your decoration--say a flower--and then pick it up and deposit on the food you`re decorating. If you goof up, wipe it all up and start again. The food is safe.

Relax people! Why would someone make such a useless but amazing machine? ----

It just so happens that he "can"!

Solved!

This seems like it would only work if you need to clean something off of an incredibly smooth surface. What`s more, it doesn`t look like it would work on anything sticky or dried on- basically, while it looks cool, it doesn`t improve upon the performance of a sponge or a rag. I`ve never found it difficult using either to clean up ketchup and mustard.

I`ve got a pizza peel that works a bit like this.I`ll be impressed the day something like this can remove the odd drop of pizza sauce from the front of my shirt.

it`s a small conveyor-belt type thing that moves backwards at the same rate at which it extends, and then the same in reverse. SCIENCE!!

It could be useful in fancy restaurants, instead of assembling something on a plate you could make it on a flat board first and easily move it to a plate

It`s a flat belt that is anchored at the top and wraps over and back under the spatula. When the spatula extends, the belt on the top side of the spatula remains stationary relative to the counter top and is paid out from underneath. The belt material is a rather sophisticated plastic - thin, flexible, and tough - which makes the whole thing possible.

fashion this thing to one of those robotic vacuum cleaners, then have hours of fun making squiggly lines of ketchup all over the kitchen floor.

Male 904
That`ll make being a jizz mopper a lot easier.

Like Angelmassb said, there`s a rolling band around the spatula thing so it can roll and pull the stuff onto itself. Then in reverse it does the opposite laying it back down. They just dialed in the timing of both to match. Awesome invention.

I just watched the whole of Fuego`s video. It was 5 minutes long. Of a production line of something I don`t even know what it was in Japan. What am I doing with my life? I couldn`t even read the writing but I watched those bits too.

I thought it was just reversing the film to show the "putting back" part. That last clip looked more `real` than the others.
Picking stuff up is one thing, putting it back EXACTLY the way it was before is fairly amazing...

"It seems like it would scratch the hell off of any surface you use it on."

If you pay close attention youll see its not a solid spatula but a rolling band instead
