Baalthazaq:

It`s both first and seen as most important. Just look at the responses - every response is stating that people should be considered to be defined by their sex and conform to whatever sexist stereotypes the poster likes.

Experiments have been done watching adults interacting with infants. The adults were deliberately misled about the purpose of the tests - they thought the infants were the focus. Consistently, the adults interacted differently with infants on the basis of what sex they were told the infants were and regardless of what sex the infants actually were (it`s easy to fool people about the sex of a child that young, since you can`t tell their sex when they`re dressed).

If it isn`t of paramount importance, why ask it as the first question, before even asking about their health?

If it isn`t important at all, why ask it at all?
Ditto sir. Gender often plays a part in our behaviors. We`re fundamentally different and (here`s were everyone needs to just chill out) THAT`S OKAY! Women don`t have to be masculine to be equal to us! They just have to be themselves. We are all good at diffent things and have differnt tallents. That variety is why we can funtion as a society at all!
That variety is exactly what you are denying, since you are trying to push everyone into whatever you consider is appropriate for their sex.

Treating humanity as just two people ("men" and "women") is not variety. It`s the opposite of variety.

Treating humanity as billions of individuals is variety.

It annoys me how often people such as yourself reverse the truth.

Angillion:
First != most important.

What do you consider the most important thing in a person?

Personality? (N/A in a newborn)
Ethics? (N/A in a newborn)
Religious/Political ideology? (N/A in a newborn)

Etc.

I literally cannot think of anything to ask about a person`s child after they`ve just had them.

Size. Name. Sex. Looks.

None of which are the things I`d look for in a friend/person.

@Angilion: "If you see people as people rather than as expressions of sexist stereotypes, it`s not scary at all."

Yeah, we are the world, we are the children. Seems to me that people pay so much attention to what sex a person is for a good reason. The sexes are different, and in MOST cases, it determines a common (nee stereotypical) set of behaviors throughout the person`s life. Sure, not everyone is typical, but most people are, which means that a cultural short hand to understanding people at some level is very useful.

Things are different today in that girls most certainly would play with a hammer, nails and lumber, just like boys would. But things haven`t changed completely. Girls would generally make something pretty to hang on the wall, while the boys would make a battering ram to tear a wall down.
We live in a scary time when you can`t immediately tell if someone is a man or a woman.
Why?

If you see people as people rather than as expressions of sexist stereotypes, it`s not scary at all.

The obsession with defining and judging people by their sex really gets on my tits. It`s normally the first thing asked about a person. It`s normal, actually normal, to find the concept of "person" so alien and frightening that the first thing you must know about every person is their sex. The very first thing:

A: "B`s just had her baby"
c: "What did she have?"

Note that everyone knows the question means "what is the sex of the baby?" Not only is a person`s sex routinely seen as the most important thing about them, so important that it`s impossible to even think about them without knowing it, but their sex is explicitly stated to be the entirety of what they are.

Yeah, I`m rant

Wow. First I thought it was freaky that she could get her voice to sound so much like a man. Then I freaked out when she said she was a tranny (wouldn`t have gussed in a million years...she`s smoking hot), then I freaked again when I realized how talented he is for sounding so much like a woman at the beginning.

I`d like to make 3 comments.
1. I think that`s a freaky guy, because it would be a lot harder for a girl to drop her voice down that far than it would be vice-versa.
2. How did they possibly find a Taiwanese judge that looks so much like Randy??
3. Nightmares. That is all.

Levyn, this is a testament to the wonders that science performs for the transgendered community. You can hardly tell that she is not a natural woman and this talent would definitely be labelled freakish in anyone born a woman. I say it`s amazing that she was able to make so many people believe she was naturally female. Props to her!

Having said that, I already have one!!! - go me!...

...and yes, VERIFIED female (although I teased her about that she might not be a lot before I found out! lol)

It`s cool when you recognise most of the words in the song

They started off male, that`s for sure, but right now they might be male, female or in between. I think they`ve gone the whole hog and changed sex completely, but I`m not sure.

The mindless yapping and screaming from presenters and audience overlaying the singing completely put me off listening.

They can sing pop ballads in either a low feminine or a high masculine pitch, right?

It`s not uncommon in the UK today to hear male pop singers using a feminine pitch and they don`t have the advantage of a partial or complete sex change.

There are even some men who can sing feminine pitches in classical singing (counter-tenor), although in my limited experience you`d never mistake them for women singing classical.
