I`m still surprised that I`m the only one who`s pointed out the fact that THE SCHOLARSHIP IS ONLY $500! That`ll hardly pay for books, let alone a higher eductation!

Now when do we get a white only university. Hey, I`m no racist, but not being racist means letting the majority have the same stuff the minority has too doesn`t it?

I`ve been wishing I was black for the scholarship opportunities. It`s pretty ridiculous the way a black students who performs worse academically than a white student is rewarded just for the color of their skin. Anyone who disagrees with my statement is simply ignorant of the facts.

"But somehow it`s racist for the one group who can`t compete for any special scholarships to have one?"

It seems to me that nobody is actually saying this is racist. People are getting all defensive and insulting black people just assuming that all black people oppose this scholarship. Well I`m half black and I think its fine. Its not racist.

The article only said that they expect to get harsh opposition, it didn`t say that they actually have.

"Go ahead and guess, I-A-B... Farmers? Black women? Exchange students? Muslims? Hermaphrodites? Oh no, not even close..."

Why would you suggest those groups? With the exception of hermaphrodites, all of them are able to get scholarships specifically for their group. Even if it is based on need or abilities, black scholarships or women`s scholarships are cutting out much of the competition. But somehow it`s racist for the one group who can`t compete for any special scholarships to have one?

The Native`s don`t even have to pay taxes, even tho they drive on the same public roads and attend the same public schools. Its not reverse racism, Its just plain racist!

I went to high school in Texas, graduated 30th in my class of 660, applied to numerous scholarships and got zero. There are very few options for white males, I`ll list them:

-Have rich parents to pay your tuition
-Be middle class or lower and just get approved for loans and pay them for the next 15 years
-Be amazing at a sport to get a scholoarship that way

You missed Military Service!

As far as scholarships go (which are supposed to help people AFFORD college), they should all definitely be based on financial hardship. I think everyone can agree to that. So there should be equal opportunities for white people to afford college as any other people. In that sense this is fine because it is intended to make up for the imbalance already existing.

I think the trickier discussion is about college admissions, if minorities should be given preference or affirmative action. This is where blacks (any other minorities too) have a decent argument. Nothing to do with slavery, but with segregation. Back in the day black people were not allowed to get a good education. Because of this, even after segregation ended black parents couldn`t help their kids do well in school so they would not get a good education, and the chain continued.

One can argue that it is harder for a black child to do well in school, and that is why they should have special treatment in admi

good for them. i have a friend of mine who goes to DU for criminal justice, and the only reason he was able to afford that college without having to go into the military first was he qualified for a minority scholarship that was granted to native Americans. he qualified for the scholarship because his grandfather was half cherokee. and yes there are cherokee bloodlines out in the mid-west, trails of tears caused that. regardless, he had to back stuff up and fabricated interest and involvement, but ended up getting the scholarship.
discrimination against any color for any reason is still discrimination. so how come that is ok for minorities to do, even though whites are only the majority by a very small amount.

I gotta go with the mainstream here, it`s pretty nice. When I was on exchange in the US years back, I was looking at scholarships with a couple really gifted friends- we quickly realized that, just by being a foreign exchange student, but also white male, I had almost double the amount of possible scholarships they did. And that, in turn, was less than half of what my host-sister could apply for. Talk about discrimination :/

Fantastic idea. Just because you are white does not mean that you have parents that can afford to send you to college. There are tons of white men that come from poverty, and it is unfair to assume just because your white, then you can afford to go to school. But really, I think that they should get rid of this whole let’s give scholarships based on race/religion/ gender etc thing altogether, scholarships should go to whoever is the best candidate, not to someone just because they are black, Jewish, gay or whatever.

There is only one rational decision that can be based on skin color: what level of SPF do I need in a sunscreen?

Anything else is bullpoo. If nothing else, I hope this scholarship wakes up the sleepers to the realization that racism isn`t restricted to any color. All preferential treatment based on skin color needs to be retired.

Just because they don`t teach it in public schools does not me we don`t or have never had any history or culture.

Ask a gay man from the 70s/80s what the significance of Aramis is.
On a cruise ship page "Friends of Dorothy" to the lounge and see who you turns up.
Look up the Stonewall Riots and find out the significance Judy Garland played in the riot.

But I understand your position. They didn`t teach me Black History back then, but I know that doesn`t mean it doesn`t exist.

Sorry, but there is nothing unique about the history or cultural heratige of gays.

There have been homosexuals since the dawn of time, all throughout history and in all cultures. That is the exact opposite of `unique`.

Homosexuality is not more `unique` than the wide variety of people who enjoy watching Soccer (actually, a lot less).

I don`t quite know what to think... I did a lot of flip flopping on this one.

At first I was like `racist obviously... "white males"? come on...`

Then I thought... wait... how exactly is this different from a scholarship awarded to minorities? Not much... ok, it`s not racist, after all "white males" are yet another minority...

But I wasn`t done yet... almost any personal attribute manifests as a minority. So where does that put all scholarships that are aimed specifically at minorities? Either they`re all ok or they`re all wrong.

Can a scholarship be racist? No. It`s inanimate. Can the person who created it be racist? Yes. If you create a scholarship for white men, or blacks or asians or whatever you are donating money to support the education and thus propagation of said `race` as opposed to everyone else. Racist, obviously.

The idea of providing a "leg up" for minorities isn`t to punish white people for the crimes of their ancestors, it`s to recognize that history is a continuum, and the events of the past are responsible for the conditions of poverty experienced by minorities in the present.

That being said, I see absolutely nothing wrong with this scholarship. If people want to give their money to white men to help them go to college, then let them.

I`ve got Anglo-Saxon in my past. They were enslaved for well over 600 years.

The Truth is that every civilization has a history involving slavery, discrimination, suffreage, etc. The United States was not unique in that aspect. Nor is it even the most recent.

The further truth is that neither you, nor I, were slaves. And everyone has been descriminated against in some form. Because of color, because of sexual orientation, religion, height, weights, hair-color, physical handicap, or just because someone would think it would be funny to make fun of you.

Get over it. Life is not/never has been/never will be either Fair, Cheap or Easy.

@el, still in half-disagreement with you. Poor white kids with good grades are less likely to be able to go to college than poor minorities with good grades. I grew up in a middle class community and even there people didn`t get to go to school unless someone else was paying for it. White B students typically went to tech schools while minority B students were able to get enough aid to go to state universities. Holding income constant, the minority student definitely has a better chance to get a better education. That said the average income of a typical white family is larger than the average minority income, but still school opportunities should be based on merit and not factors out of your control.

@Sarah, you have no idea what you are talking about. The foundations aren`t really good at working out how much money a family has, only income. For example, my parents run their own business and my mom had breast cancer, which put me in an odd situation. My family made ~50k but a lot went out due to the business costs and medical bills. Not to mention the income lost due to my mom`s inability to work at full capacity for the few years after her diagnosis, in short, we did not make anywhere near 50k a year. Did I get financial aid for my grades? Yes. Did I get aid for income? Hardly any. Did I get enough to allow me to go to the schools I was qualified to go to? Not even close.

I might as well kiss my college dreams goodbye. If there is any hope for a bit more race equality for the middle-class, average, American Caucasian, we should either do something like this or do away with gender or race based help entirely. >:-(

If you`re white and get good grades you`ll get a scholarship and a good job.

If you`re white and get bad grades you might not get a scholarship but you`ll still get a good job.

Benefits come with the color. If you deny it you`re a liar.

"Only RICH white guys have a hard time getting scholarships."

The only one I qualified for was a grant for children of single parents, because my mom and dad were divorced.

Oh and she only made about 42k a year. Too much money for any more assistance. Needless to say I couldn`t afford to finish.

@ieatbunnies:

Then all the minorities would bitch by saying it`s slanted to give white males the advantage, even if we don`t.

@ieatbunnies - You speak the truth and WIN! It should be about merit and financial hardship ect ect no matter what race you are..

El Chinche, you must be proud. You sure did tell `The Man`! As if there aren`t white people that don`t have a plethora of money, smug little a-hole aren`t ya?

I would normally say this is fine, but if you`re low-income and you have great grades you can easily get a scholarship regardless of ethnicity. Only RICH white guys have a hard time getting scholarships. I mean the chances that you don`t qualify in any way for a scholarship means you probably don`t need one.

Why does everybody always assume they have it harder than everyone else? All I ever hear is a bunch of whining about how every other race/gender has it easier than they do.

Life isn`t fair, quit bitching and get working.

Rather than giving scholarships to white males, they should just remove the racial and gender ties to other scholarships, make everything about merit.

Reverse racism is racism against your own race.

If that`s even possible.

@el chinche, not every white person comes from a well off family. I would not be in any college without scholarships, despite the fact that I was an A student and made 4`s and 5`s on all my AP exams 33 on ACT and 2040 on SAT.

Oh boo-flipping-hoo. What is up with white guys always trying to play the victim in race relations now a days.Listen up whitey, you don`t have it as hard as you think you do. In fact you guys have it pretty god dam good. if you can`t see that well then you`re just a spoiled brat. This generation of white men are the laziest, most self-entitled, and self-centered and arrogant group of people in the U.S. Every single minority in the US had to go through difficult times, discrimination, and general crap (at the hands of white men by the way) to get equal footing here. And when we get to a point where it looks like discrimination in the US might be on a decline here comes whitey playing the victim. Claiming he deserves more than he already has. Whining like he`s a true victim of today`s society because he has to work harder than his self-entitled ass is used to. Get the eff over yourselves and work for your education.

"Fancylad is reverse racist."

auburnjunky, there is no such thing as "reverse" racism. Racism is racism.

Either you are a racist or you are not

Actually a good idea. A lot of white males (myself included) can`t afford to go to the college of their choice because of the cost. Financial aid and school scholarships aren`t enough and many scholarships keep you in state, there really aren`t that many options available for white males. The school I would have gone to would have cost me 40k a year compared the one I`m at now which is about 1/2 that, running me around 5k because of in-state tuition, financial aid, and state scholarships. Had there been more scholarships available I would have been at the better school.

Whats wrong with that? They have scholarships where I`m from for Asian, Indian, Maori, Pacific Islanders.. But none strictly for Europeans.

@auburnjunky uhh, white males aren`t really a minority. But I do kind of agree with this scholarship. If you`re an average, white male you are basically screwed for scholarships unless you have connections.

sooo?
There were so many bursaries and scholarships to people with non-white skin (at least there was when I was in highschool) - This doesn`t seem like a bid deal

Boring post...

Every other group is allowed a special scholarship except white males?

THAT would be racist! THIS is just the norm.

Honestly doing uni applications and scholarship applications as a white female, I`ve always felt bad for white males because they really have no specific options just for them. I mean, since I`m in business as a girl, there are so many options for me. What, having a vagina means I should have an easier ride through post secondary? It`s really not fair. White males often need financial help, too, you know. I think it`s good they`re being included. And this scholarship can apply to people who are part black, part asian, etc. So it`s really not as shocking as you`re making it seem.
