Well despite the clear abuse of the English language the tattoo should say: "It is better to die on your feet than live on your knees" Which is a quote that is usually WRONGLY attributed to Ernesto "Che" Guevara, And was said by Emiliano Zepata.

Then/Than...the birds look angry...the banner doesn`t flow properly...and even if the message had been delivered properly, it still sucks. you want to live? go live! don`t get a tattoo about it.

I am tired of dropout tattoo artists that abuse the english language. Let`s try than and not then.

A common trend i`m noticing here is that everybody is continuously overlooking the fact that you are all more than likely misinterpreting the meaning of the tattoo. I think his statement is that he doesn`t believe in prayer.

Sparrows don`t have lengthened outer tail feathers, they don`t have pointed wing shapes, they have prominent beaks, rather than wide insect catching gapes. They are not blue on the back and red on the breast. Its fairly safe to say these are representations of barn swallow or one of the closely related species, not a sparrow of either definition (i.e. neither an old world sparrow (true sparrow) nor a new world sparrow (a bunting)).

Now I could understand you not knowing the difference between species of the closely related families emberizidae and passeridae, but not between either of those and the distantly related hirundidae. Even in cr*p tattoo form.

No, I know the difference between a swallow and sparrow in real life, however in this style of tattooing it is often hard to distinguish. Not to mention that there is more than one variety of each. While sparrows are generally "stubby fat feckers" there are multiple varieties that have the long tail and more coloration, there are also swallows with shorter tails and less coloration. My point is that the birds are closely related and in this tattoo it has characteristics of both birds. This bird has the usual body of a sparrow, the usual tail of a swallow, and the coloration of an Eastern blue. I know birds, this isn`t anyone I`m familiar with.

I was impressed that IAB are finally getting to grips with simple bird ID, until I read kingpongs comment.

Sparrows are stubby fat feckers that can barely fly and swallows are lithe aerial athletes that can easily carry a coconut aloft.

reading from left to right as normal people do, doesn`t this say "I would rather then live, die standing on my knees"??
I think that this guy wants to live but would want the reader to die standing on his knees - what a weird sentiment.

"I would rather die standing then live on my knees"
so he would rather die standing up and then be reincarnated as a man with no lower half of his legs? im no ornithologist, but i can tell you that is not the word "than" but instead its close relative (from the same genus infact)"then". the words are very similar in appearance but behave much differently when observed in their natural habitat. On a more seriously sad, perhaps happy, note. If this guy lives in america he will probably never meet someone who will point out that permanent error either from ignorance (more likely) or courtesy. Which is somewhat sad but also happy because if no one notices he will never have to get it fixed. ignorance truly is bliss.

@comet, yeah swallows and sparrows are used now, but originally the swift represented 1000 nautical miles traveled and the bluebird (which is only found in America) was reserved for sailors who reached the New World (cardinals and jays were often used for this as well). The switch occurred once people started getting tattoos without the meaning and it was offensive to actual sailors. To the sailors, it was like a civilian wearing a Medal of Honor. Naturally conflicts occurred, but people didn`t want to quit getting the tattoos, so they switched to sparrows and swallows. Eventually this became the more popular style and is now falsely believed to be the original style.

And because people embellish any art I`m not going to say that it would or would not be any species due to tail length. I can tell the difference on real birds but not on a painting.

@KingPong: The Swallow is actually the most common bird to get as a tattoo. Swallows dates back to sailors getting this tattoo as a milestone to a particular number of miles traveled. Some also believe the swallow was a symbol of always returning home, though this fact changes depending on what source you`re reading from.

The main *visual* distance between the Swallow and the Sparrow is the elongated tail, which belongs to the swallow.

(*note: I was only able to use "swallow" in the post 6 times. I disappoint myself.)

@zombunny and nebbie, they are both traditional bird tattoos to get, however the most traditional bird tattoos would have to be the swift and the bluebird due to their association with the sailing community, but most songbirds are acceptable as "traditional" tattoos. However, there is no way you can tell a swallow from a sparrow (or most birds for that matter).

No, he wants to first die standing, then live on his knees sometime later. Oh, wait, maybe you are supposed to read it straight across, so it says "I would rather then live, die standing on my knees." So, given a choice, he would rather at that time live.

"I`m surprised there isn`t a website dedicated to misspelled tattoos."

The fooked up thing is, I can almost guarantee you that this isn`t a spelling mistake, but instead a matter of using the wrong word. Quite often people do interchange these two words even though it`s grammatically incorrect.

Jerry Seinfeld agrees with him. He once said "Living is good. Dying, not so good."
