However, once the person has entered the field of play they are treated as a member involved within the game are they not?
Lol absolutely not. If I ran on and kicked the ball in the net it wouldn`t count as a goal. You`re not in the game just because you get on the field.
Maybe if the lazy azz refs had done their job and gotten the guy off the field, the player wouldn`t have needed to step in at all.
It`s not the ref`s responsibility to do that, it`s those lethargic security guards. The ref only has authority over players, not members of the public.

Having said that, a red card was a massive overreaction IMO.

This is simply a matter of security and refs not doing their job. Someone had to. The only other option is to contiue to let the guy stay on the pitch for the rest of the match.

"it`s not soccer, it`s football."

Actually, it is the English who gave it the name soccer. It was an abreviation for "Associated" football league. They started callis it "soccer" to distinguish it from other forms of "football" such as Gaelic football.

So if the founding country of a sport wants gives it the name "soccer", then I don`t see why they have a problem when other people use that name.

EntrE: I see your point. However, once the person has entered the field of play they are treated as a member involved within the game are they not? Otherwise it would be wrong to arrest them for a peaceful demonstration.

of course you could argue about the rule but the refs actions were 100% right... that`s what i ment with "there is no room for argument here"

actually it`s pretty simple. it is a rule that no player is allowed to either curse at the audience, threaten them, or use violence. i am sure the actual rule is much more detailed than my attempt here but i did mention to most important points of the rule. I have seen people sent off for pretending to throw a ball at a fan. so really there is no room for argument here

I hate how soccer refs ALWAYS think they are right, and always over react. They don`t want to hear what you have to say, and they give you a card if you keep talking. Such bull.

Such bs, that referee is an idiot. Of course some Europeans are going to post here that "Silly Americans we`re better" blahblahblah because we`re bashing the ref for the call, but I have plenty of European friends that would agree that it was a very unfair call. The game needed to continue and the player caught the streaker in order to progress in that direction.

"That`s why the US sucks, in Europe we condone any type of violent behavior and it was not the players job to stop the adept, that is the police`s job. "

Condone- verb (used with object), -doned, -don·ing.
1.
to disregard or overlook (something illegal, objectionable, or the like).
2.
to give tacit approval to: By his silence, he seemed to condone their behavior.

He was sent of for violent conduct. Violent conduct is still violent conduct even when the person deserves it. The player who was sent off at no point appraoches the ref so it couldn`t have been for dissent.

The player got violent during the game he saw the red card just as the rules were written.

Someone needs to explain to this empty-headed footy tard, Red Card means you leave the field, not argue with the referee like a drating tit.

I think the player wasn`t send off for the assault itself but for threatening the ref or giving him lip when the referee reprimanded him verbally.

Wow... In the U.S., when some fan gets stupid, and comes onto the playing surface during the game (where they DON`T belong), and one of the players makes sure they understand the error of their ways, we cheer them:Rob Ray is the MAN.
