What would American-handball look like?
Bunch of guy running around kicking an egg-shaped ball?

This is football, not your weird US-colonial rugby..

Kickball should be called soccer. Soccer should be called my foot on your balls. And Football should be called tractor pull.

Or maybe we should use different names for everything other than the oldest known version of football (which is still played in a few parts of Britain, albeit with more modern safety rules such as "no punching anyone"). That would make sense.
1) Soccer is the proper name for this sport. It`s short for Association Rules Football, and was called Soccer in Europe for a long time before they changed to Football.
Except that it wasn`t really. It was a jokey name used by some students in one country only and it wasn`t used for a long time before they changed to football.

But it probably was an abbreviation of either "football association" or, more likely, "association rules football". Football played in accordance with the rules created by the football association was called that to differentiate it from other forms of football.

Which means they should have called it assball.

Isobar:

Back when football was created, it was not very much Rugby. Rugby started in the 19th century. Football dates back at least a thousand years earlier, probably much more, and was defined mainly by a lack of rules until at least the late middle ages. "Here`s one goal, here`s the other, don`t kill anyone" was pretty much it. They didn`t even have a fixed number of players on each side, let alone rules about passing.

All the modern games are football. The feet-only variant is the oldest modern variant played in English-speaking lands, so that`s the one that should be called just "football". Rugby football, American football and any other types of football should be called by their full names or a different shortform (like Rugby is). It`s probably too late to do anything about that now, though.

I do hope he faced some nasty punishment after this was reviewed by officials, eh? It`s disgraceful and brings SHAME to him, his country and footy in general.
It`s like watching a Frenchman falling down when the opposing player looks in his direction...

I would like to make note that I described the link as Football not Soccer. We invented the language, therefore we have the choice on what certain things are called and how they are spelled.

Ok everyone, it`s time for a history lesson.

As an American who loves both football and soccer, it`s time the whole world learns why we call football football.

Back when football was created, it was very much Rugby, where you could not throw the ball forward. In fact, there really was no passing at all. It was all about running the ball. How do you run? With your feet. Yep, this is how football got it`s name people. Perfectly logical, except for the fact the game evolved to allow forward passing.

2) Does anyone know what happened? Did he get a penalty? Did the guy who`s arm was used get a penalty? Was there any followup?

The referee gave a foul on favor to Chile (team in red) so the faint did worked lol but it wasent anything that would change the course of a game.

By the way, this happen in the Southamerican U-20 tournament, meaning they are all players under 20 years old. And too funny the narrators, they find this move as ridiculous as we all do and they say this is like something from The Three Stooges lol

I`m pretty sure football is the correct name. You use your feet to handle the ball, pass the ball and score goals. In American Football you use your hands and to pass the ball, your legs to run up and down the pitch and your body to tackle other players. How is that football?

Rick S:

Rick S, please pay attention to what Rick S is saying, he seems like a pretty smart cookie, though he seems to only really hit his stride around the second sentence.

this is why this isn`t a real sport.

@freddyferret
The problem with that is, American audiences would be confused if you call it football, but European audiences know exactly what you mean when you call it soccer. Therefore, calling it soccer is more appropriate for a website in English.

The president of FIFA calls it Association Football, and says Soccer is a good abbreviation of it.

Clever but he should have been sent off. By the way, it IS football. Don`t be a wanker and say it`s soccer just because you can`t accept it. In every other country people say American Football when they talk about the game we call football.
