That`s pretty bad, I suppose... I don`t see what`s so wrong... one level of government stepping over another. It`s not right that people won`t get to vote on local laws, but what if there are actually towns that are running up a massive debt? Why not put someone in charge who knows what they`re doing? As for the example (wall-mart-ville)? Why wallmart? They have their own agenda... why not just use a small company that specializes in accounting - something that can fix the "financial crisis".

Sorry... I don`t buy the hype. The republican position is defensible.

I don`t particularly agree with either side though.

well well well. Listen to her spouting her opinions as if they were facts.

Rachael Maddow - Cheerleader of the Ubber-Liberals. The democratic Glen Beck.

I bet if it were a Democrat governor she`d be hailing this as the finest piece of legislation since the Magna Carta.

I am so tired of the far left vs far right thing.

    This is deceptive and hypocritical.

Deceptive, because the elimination of the business tax has nothing to do with eliminating the tax credit. It is being replaced by a 6% corporate income tax.

Hypocritical, because she is saying that eliminating a tax credit is a tax increase. When liberals are talking about tax credits for businesses and corporations, however, they portray it as taking back the money that the evil corporations are stealing from the people.

Why is this garbage on I-A-B?

Ten bucks says you have no idea what is going on in Michigan, and you never watch Glenn Beck`s program. You are almost assuredly saying that because you agree with her world view and you disagree with his.

He`s only a Libertarian when it comes to opposing policies supported by Democrats- but you don`t see him speaking out against the Patriot Act, Marijuana Prohibition, or Bush`s war in the Middle East.

"The bare bones of the story though-- putting someone in control in the event of a financial crisis... is scary enough."

That already happens. Michigan has had seven instances of fiscal emergencies where communities had emergency financial managers appointed under Public Act 72 of 1990.

The difference with the current bill is that it allows the same thing to happen with cities and counties. The local government can be placed into receivership, which means someone is given charge of their financial responsibility until they can take care of their debt. The part that has the liberals upset is that this person has the power to void union contracts.

The bill basically gives the state the power to say, "you`re in a state of fiscal emergency, so we`re going to take care of it, because you have shown that you cannot."

I did, and while you were attacking her journalistic integrity (I agree with you there), you still didn`t defend removing tax credits for poor and elderly people. You just criticized Democrats for not calling doing so tax increases when they do it to the wealthy. Increasing taxes for people who are just barely surviving is cruel and insane. If you`re gonna ask people to tighten their belts, start with people who can afford to do so.

I may not always agree with Rachael`s approach to some issues but what I`ve learned from watching many documentaries on declassified government documents is that we have a need and a right to question the government. All wars since WII have been manufactured by government with gross public manipulation. Rachael looks for what`s not being said because that`s what politics is all about.

Redser99. I am one of those people and there is not a single thing the democrat congress with the democrat president who "are for the people" did in that time that I could get behind and say "This is helping me". Even your glorified healthcare bill. Before healthcare was passed I paid 20 dollars a month for my medication and I had no trouble finding a doctor. After the bill was passed and I moved to a new town, all of a sudden doctors offices are not taking new patients and my meds are now 40 dollars a month.

But here have your kool aid. you got your side and i got mine.

I`m not American, but I find myself paying an unhealthy amount of attention to American politics. Blame `The Daily Show` I find John Stewart a hilariously witty comedian, but not a very good politician and a terrible journalist. I do not `get my news` from him. So many of you Americans can be so thoroughly outraged at an issue after no more than 7-minutes on your ultra-biased (right/left) wing 24-hour newscast. All without the slightest concern that budgets and bills are hundreds of pages long. It`s not like you need to be a constitutional lawyer to be an informed citizen but its also not like these bills and budgets are monolithic exercises in redundancy, just waiting on the vine to be boiled down to a few paragraphs of condescending finger-wagging by your Maddows, Hannitys and Limbaughs. They aren`t politicians, lawyers, academics; they aren`t even journalists, so stop letting them form your opinions. Watch CSPAN or read up on your concerns on wikipedia, then have an opinion.

"Increasing taxes for people who are just barely surviving is cruel and insane"

This is exactly what I mean when I say she is misconstruing what is going on. Michigan currently exempts most or all of a person`s pension income from state taxes. Considering the state`s population is decreasing overall while the elderly population continues to increase, more and more people fall into the "untaxed" category, which is unsustainable. This budget taxes their pension income, but leaves their social security check untaxed. There is nothing cruel or insane about that.

"All wars since WII have been manufactured by government with gross public manipulation."

Yeah, the Korean War was totally manufactured. North Korea didn`t invade South Korea or anything. Saddam Hussein definitely didn`t invade Kuwait, and Afghanistan surely was not harboring terrorists who planned the worst attack on American soil in its history. Vietnam was escalated by JFK and LBJ... Democrats both, so I guess that war was justifiable, right?

"Republicans for the businesses...Democrats for the people."

Correction; Republicans for business, Democrats for government... which to them is interchangeable with "the people." In reality, they are for making "the people" more dependent on government.

People protest every bill that is passed. But who can they blame for this? They elected that governor to represent them. They elected the bicameral senate that represents them!

They elected the officials who are passing this bill, and you want me to complain for them? If they disagree, they could fix it by electing officials that actually represent them (something tells me they already have). If such a huge portion of the state is unhappy with the outcome, they should have cared more and been more involved when elections were held, and when they are held again.

If others are still unhappy with they bill, they can argue its constitutionality in the courts.

There is no one to blame for any of this but ourselves. We ARE the government, we have just forgotten.

If we want to talk about the ethics of all powerful czars we need look no further than our own White House. Yet we are still a far cry from a police state.

Our federal government has the power to mandate what we buy, trumps states on marijuana legalization and homosexuality, destroys companies at a whim, and saves others (by taking absolute control, or becoming the landlord), all by presidential decree.

So...the Republican governor of a state decides to instate a similar program for cities and municipalities (which by the way, are all quasi corporations in which you are the employee) and it is wrong. Of course we all know President Obama is the only person in the world with the omniscience and wisdom to be trusted with such power!

Correct me if I`m wrong, but I thought that Governor`s were not allowed to introduce bills, only suggest them in the first place? So blame the governor if you want, but the real enemy (all the way to the federal government) is Congress.

Madest, all she says is "They have to have a special ID that most minorities/students won`t have"

I didn`t realize I have access to a "Hey I`m a white guy ID" that I could buy and others were barred from getting.

While I somewhat disagree with not allowing people to register and vote on the same day, there was a lot of fishy things that went on in 2008, that could be cause for these kinds of responses.

I imagine she is saying people have to have a driver`s license to vote...yeah, they also tell me I have to buy health insurance although my health affects no one but myself. They also tell me I have to carry an ID when I`m out, even if I`m just walking down the street.

So...what`s the point? If you want to vote, get an DL or state ID card. Doesn`t seem unreasonable to me. I like how she makes the youth vote, the student vote, and the first time voters to seem like three large and sharply distinct categories though.

I read the Bill. It`s typically long winded and of course filled with vagaries because being concise is counterproductive to a surreptitious government agenda. It`s ironic that Republicans want us to have Firearms but I suspect that it`s more due to the hope that we`ll turn them on each other and they can seize control in the ensuing chaos.

It won`t, because Rachel Maddow is completely distorting what is actually happening. If this were a clip of Bill O`Reilly or Glenn Beck saying, well, ANYTHING, everyone here would respond by calling him a liar and claiming that anyone who believes what they say is a gullible sheep who listens to Fox News propaganda.

At least Bill O`Reilly and Glenn Beck accurately describe their programs as opinion shows. Maddow acts like she is a news anchor delivering the straight facts.

"So you read it, or TL;DR? Have you seen Obamacare?"

Yes, I`ve read it, and yes I`ve seen Obamacare, an equally long winded and nearly incomprehensible ramble.

The key is understanding the synopsis which is what Rachel Maddow is attempting. Yes, she`s promoting an agenda, as is anyone with an opinion. Fundamentally, however, her assessment is correct. Being a *UNION EMPLOYEE* of a Municipal Government, I am certainly biased.

The Constitution Provides Fair Guidelines for Governance.

Unions Provide Fair Guidelines for Employment.

I have now told you my angle on this issue, what`s your? Have *you* read the bill?

I no longer watch cable news but I had to comment. Comparing Rachel Maddow to Glenn Beck is ridiculous. Glenn Beck brainwashes his followers with blatant lies in a classroom setting using repetition.

Case in point Glenn teaches that Democrats are racist because they fought for slavery. When in reality pretty much the whole white south (Liberals and Conservatives) became Democrats when Lincoln a Republican fought against the south. And the white south remained Democrats for about 100 years until the 60`s when the Civil Rights movement allowed the conservatives of the South to move to the Republican party.

This is also why Martin Luther King Jr was a Republican. He wasn`t about to associate with the white south who was for slavery. If he would have lived he would have moved to the Democratic party after the Civil Rights movement.

To check my facts go to conservapedia.com/Republican_Party. Scroll down half the page to Realignment: The South becomes Republican

I want to add that I think Rachel Maddow is equally damaging to America as Glenn Beck. This is because both of their partisan politics are pulling our citizens apart at a time in our history when we desperately need to come together. That is why I no longer watch cable news.

Your comment about Czars is pointless as the "Czar" title has been used since the 1930`s. Of the 109 Federal Czar`s that have been appointed 42 were appointed by Republicans. The recent trend of appointing large numbers of them was begun by Bush II, who appointed 33. Yes, the Dems have appointed 60% of them and Obama has appointed the most (37), but this is a cross-aisle issue.

First post: Comparing Rachel Maddow and Glenn Beck is ridiculous.

Second post: Rachel Maddow is as damaging as Glenn Beck.

Not so ridiculous then? The methods are different, but the aims and intentions remain the same.

    T-Marley...

I was referring to the level of honesty. There is spin on both sides but the level of blatant lies is strongest on Glenn Beck`s side. One of the most blatant and biggest lies being the example I gave.

And even when the pundits on either side aren`t spinning they allow their guests to spread lies unchallenged. That to me is just as bad as them saying the lie. Because they know the truth but they sit there and allow a guest to spread lies as fact. And they do it over and over and over until it becomes truth in our weak human minds.

"I was referring to the level of honesty. There is spin on both sides but the level of blatant lies is strongest on Glenn Beck`s side."

Glenn Beck says every time he is on the TV/radio that he is an entertainer, and not a journalist, and that his message is for people to think for themselves.

Maddow portrays her/himself as a journalist, and her "show" comes across as news. Two totally different things.

If Glenn Beck`s message is for people to think for themselves why does he brainwash his followers through repetition? More important why does he sometimes brainwash them with misinformation and lies? And yes it is brainwashing. When someone says something over and over and over until it becomes comfortable to the listeners ears to the point where it becomes truth that is brainwashing.

People who are stupid enough to be brainwashed in the first place should be disregarded.

    @auburnjunky:

The ability to be brainwashed isn`t a matter of intelligence. It is a flaw in our brains that all mankind shares.

"I`ve heard Howard Stern curse enough times for it to become comfortable to me. Is that brainwashing?"

It is if the curse word flies out of your mouth as your own. Or if the reaction to a situation is to automatically say one of his sayings without even realizing it. Or if you were a fan during the Artie Lang days and you had "Waaaaa" burned into your head to the point that you said that to someone without even thinking. We like to think we are in 100% control but we are being controlled or steered in many different ways. The easiest way to stop one large area of control is to turn off cable news and partisan talk radio permanently. You will be amazed at how much happier life becomes.

    @auburnjunky:

You completely side tracked me with the Howard Stern comment. Becoming comfortable with a swear doesn`t relate. I was talking about the phenomenon where a person is told a lie over and over and over until the lie is comfortable to them and at this point the lie becomes truth. And when a person reaches this state they will fight tooth and nail for that "truth" because they don`t want to admit that they were manipulated. This is how political pundits control their audience and keep the fight going. Even through the fight is almost always something we have absolutely no control over.

It is funny that you bring up Howard Stern because he is the exact opposite of a political pundit. Anyone who listens to his show knows that his problem is he is too honest - to the point where it becomes uncomfortable. But that is why people love him. His honesty is refreshing in the sea of lies.

auburnjunky-""Republicans should get their own country somewhere"

They did. It`s called `The United States of America.`. Unfortunately all the liberals snuck in from Europe after the conservatives had tamed the land.

Think about that for a second? Let`s seperate into two countries based on how the people vote.

Republicanland would have all the producers, all the inovators and all the hard working people. They`d have the farmers, taxpayers, researchers, the military...basically all the people capable and willing to provide for themselves.

Democratvania, on the other hand, would have all the non-taxpayers, the welfare recipients, the special interest groups and all the people who make a living at distributing other people`s tax dollars (and all the Community Organizers). What? No tax money to distribute? Sucks. Don`t worry, you can unionize and demand higher wages and benifits from...well, nobody. All the jobs went to Republican

meGrandel- hahahaha really? yeah... thats exactly who republicans are. and thats exactly who liberals are. your like, really, totally smart! conservatives really like that image. in reality its not the case. liberals like their image to, but many dont act that way. if conservatives had their way with everything homosexuality would be illegal, christianity would be taught as scientific fact, the government would be even more broke, and we`d be in even more wars. if liberals had their way we`d pretty much be a bunch of pussies.
