Actually thats a misunderstanding passed on and on. Drill sgts. give that instruction because IF you faint (due to vasovagal syncope) and have your knees locked, you`ll fall with your face straight to the ground. If you have your knees bent, you`ll fall more softly and get less hurt. You don`t faint because of it.

If you listen to the tenor and the bass parts in the choral piece, then you`d realize that they had been holding a note for a long time. He probably just got short of breath. Happens to inexperienced choruses ALL the time. In fact, happened to me yesterday.

Drill Sgts in the Army specifically warn against locking your knees when standing at attention, especially for long periods of time, because of this very problem. Saw a guy pass out because of this right in the middle of our graduation ceremony

>>It`s funny how many people believe that locking your knees can make you pass out. From what I`ve seen, this is mostly an American thing - this `medical myth` doesn`t exist in other countries. <<<

I guess americans are just built differently.

The return of blood from your legs is aided by the movement of you muscles. Recall from your highschool biology that veins have small "valves" along their length which create a "pumping" action ass the vein is squeezed and released during activity of the muscles. If you stand with your knees "locked" this effect does not occur because you are not using your muscles. This reduces flow to the brain and causes you to pass out.

Nah just kidding. It`s called a vasovagal syncope.

It`s not true, folks. You can stand with your knees locked, no risks. Saying that `it`s true because I`ve seen my friend passing out and he had locked knees` doesn`t mean anything as you can`t even be sure if he was indeed locking his knees prior to falling.
Come on, do the test, stand over a mattress or something and lock your knees. You`ll be over a mattress so you don`t have to be afraid. Stand there watching TV or something. Let`s smash this myth together.

If I wanted to see a kid lock his knees and pass out while performing with his choir, I would have watched the tape of my spring concert 2001. That kid at least took a few of us with him.

Lots of people have mentioned locking your knees, which is the most common cause of passing out in choir. I`ve also performed on a stage where the air circulation was so poor that it got really hot up there and people started passing out from the heat. The school staff members briefly opened the doors to allow the cool fall air in, but they closed the doors again minutes later and a few more people had to stagger off the stage before they tumbled off.

In choir your taught while standing not to lock your knees. Kid didn`t pay attention. It restricts blood flow, and that combined with the way you breath while singing leads to this.

We had a kid fall over in a middle school recital. It happens pretty often. :P

I fainted once, in the hospital, at night, going for a pee. I learned that my head hit the wall first, then hit the hard floor second. Never felt a thing. Funny, but instead of having a banged up head, all i had was a slight bruise on the left side of my knee. So if this poor guy hit his face i`m pretty sure he didn`t feel a thing....until he woke up...loll

The only thing amusing about this is the caption saying I-A-B could prevent boredom. It`s a yawn fest lately.

I love the fact that everyone around him watched him fall, but no one made a move to stop him.

And that is why you don`t lock your knees if you have to stand for a long period of time.

yeah i highly doubt that was out of boredom... this happens when you stand with your knees locked hard. the blood stops flowing freely and you can pass out.

Yes...especially in post-adolescent boys. It has to do with growing quickly and the cardiovascular system adjusting to blood flow. Poor kid. How embarrassing.

@smilinsam - exactly. I can`t even begin to count how many times this happened to other people during our JROTC inspections. You don`t have to lock your knees to stand straight.

The teacher didn`t seem too concerned. I`m getting a vibe that she was more miffed about her concert being ruined.

More proof that you shouldn`t lock your knees while standing for long periods of time. Other than that I thought the music was actually decent
