I myself can`t fathom ever electing to have an abortion, but I also can`t fathom denying others the right to make that choice on their own. Just because it isn`t right for me doesn`t mean it isn`t right for anyone else. I get that people wanting to ban abortion believe that life begins at conception, hey, I share that belief, but I don`t think it`s right to cram YOUR beliefs down other people`s throats. ~I`m just sayin~

Who gets to say that the mother`s life isn`t as valuable as the fetus` life, and that the fetus` gets to live, and the mother has to die? Of course, this is ONLY in the case of a mother`s life being at risk if she were to continue the pregnancy, but it`s a valid exception to this.

That is a rare occurance. 99% of abortions are for convenience because the woman AND man were too stupid to use contraceptives.

Abortion is NOT a moral birth control meathod.

Why is it that the mother, her body, her life and her well being is always pushed aside in these cases? Why can`t anyone just let sleeping dogs lie and accept the fact that people are going to make their own choices regardless of the hazards. If a woman wants an abortion she`s either going to go to a clean, safe facility where she has a better chance of not getting an infection or something going wrong, or she`s going to go to a skeevy, dirty, dark place where it could kill her. Abortion should never be used as birth control, but it should be used as a last resort if necessary.

Gerry- what about condom failure, no contraceptive is 100% safe. What about rape, or a child conceived while on the pill? I have misgivings about a termination at 20 weeks except in cases of non viability but up to 12 weeks would be reasonable.

Abortion is NOT a moral birth control meathod. That is only your opinion gerry.
Saying something is moral or immoral doesn`t hold much weight in my books.

forbid abortions in any case in which the fetus had a detectable heartbeat
If you want to compromise on this abortion issue then make the point of no return when the fetus first has mental activity, not a heartbeat. The heart is a replaceable organ, the brain isn`t.

Abortion is not a first line method of birth control- antis always make it sound as though every woman who has one is engaged in unprotected sex all day every day with the intention of getting an abortion if she falls pregnant. Abortions are needed if contraception fails ( which it can do) - I am 47, if I fell pregnant it would be terribly dangerous for both me and the child. To say nothing of the fact no 16 year old wants a mother in her 60s. Am I to forgo sex in case contraception fails?

You can make all the excuses you want. You can cloud the issue up into a vast grey area, but the bottom line remains the same. Is it a good idea to kill a baby.

Throw some more "what if" scenario`s out there. It doesn`t change the question at the heart of the matter.

Ok. You want to know why abortion is wrong? Here it is in a nutshell. You`re not having a cyst removed. It`s a life for crying out loud. If your having an abortion just for the sake of convenience, then it`s wrong. Too lazy to use birth control? Then it`s wrong. I`m not against it for any bullsh*t religious reason. Everyone`s heard that before. It boils down to moral responsibility, which is what we should be teaching our kids anyway. Quit making excuses for wanting to f*ck everyone "because it feels good" without accepting the consequences. Do everyone a favor and take the next step and sterilize yourselves instead. You know, Maury Povich can`t have everyone on his show.

No, that`s not what I said. Let me clarify. If you`re already morally bereft, then sleeping with everyone is already no big deal and therefore, when you get pregnant by these actions you also have no problem aborting it.
However, if you`re in a relationship and end up pregnant, that was a risk you took and the decision to abort then does weigh heavilly on a woman with some moral fiber. That is the crux of the issue. All you women fighting for the "right to choose" wouldn`t fight for it at all if it wasn`t for the skanks doing it left and right and abusing the hell out of it. Abortion should be legal in certain cases only, rape being one of them. If more people taught their kids moral responsibility, this wouldn`t even be an issue.

So bringing an unwanted child into an already overpopulated world and dooming it to an unloving mother or a life in the foster care system is A-OK as long as you don`t kill it?

Besides, I don`t think women should be forced to have a child if she will have to take the time to care for it and put her life on hold in the process, or live knowing her child is out being raised by someone else.

This is stupid. Regardless of the reason, the law shouldn`t dictate what anyone does with their body.

Abortion shouldn`t be used as a form of birth control, and I think that someone should seriously consider all options before going through with one, but seriously, if a woman wants an abortion, no one, especially the government, should stop her.

@Gerry1of1 Well, good sir, if you must know: all of that stuff can fail. My boyfriend was conceived when his mother was on the pill. I was an accident. Hell, I`m sure 99%, as you like to throw that number around, of IABers were accidents due to broken condoms and failed pills as well as well as an egg remaining in the tube after it was tied. Stuff happens and you can`t stop it.
Also, mind you, you don`t own a vagina. You are a man so you can only sit there and say "Yeah whatever it`s bad." But being a girl, I can tell you now that it would screw up my life if I got pregnant at this age.

@ Avalessa - Yes, though statistically low, it is possible for all forms of contraception to fail. But keep in mind the actual purpose of hetero-sex is to make a baby. You know that is the risk you take when you engage in an ADULT activity. As an ADULT you can`t just kill a baby because you had your fun but then don`t want the responsability.

Sucks being an adult, doesn`t it.

I like to consider myself very conservative, in most of my personal beliefs.

However, in case of abortion I believe that when rape, disease, mental dysfunction, or danger to the mother is present, that abortion should be allowed.

I do not think that abortion should be used as a birth control method. I think that is both immoral, and evil. I think after one "accident" and an abortion is needed, the woman should be sterilized as part of the procedure. Abortion is very serious, and it should have consequences - it should not be treated as if you are treating a common cold.

I also think that in cases that are not rape, that the father should have decision making rights as well. If he wants the child, he should have the custody and rights to it. It is his sperm after all.

Why are Americans so hung up on abortion, it`s legal, it not going away. And lately these American anti-abortion groups seem to targeting women`s rights (all of them) to get their anti-abortion position sold.

When women start losing their rights, where is it going to stop? Because it hasn`t with the poor, middle class or the unions. These anti-abortion groups are in cahoots with the tea party, the republicans, the corporations, and the uber rich.

When women lose their rights, everyone loses.

If you don`t want to take the time to care for it, then put it up for adoption. That`s what the adoption process is for. If you`re worried about your child being raised by strangers, then don`t have sex and get pregnant. Look, I`m not saying all abortion should be banned, but certainly most of them. The "right to choose" should be called The "right to get rid of my immoral mistake". I`m tired of people defending the right to basically not just screw up their lives, but their kids as well.
You know, Charles Barkley was dead wrong when he said he`s not anyones role model. EVERYONE is a role model to all kids. That`s how we advance as a society.

    @ Gary

Adoption isn`t simply just a process of dropping a kid off at a police station and then the kid finding a loving home, because there are some pretty large hurdles in front of prospective foster parents, much less adoptees. there`s a lot of suffering that happens because that kid gets given up, and a lot of suffering that could happen if an unprepared mother without the means to support the child doesn`t give it up. Also, women who want an abortion in places where it`s illegal will get illegal and unsafe abortions. What`s worse, losing one prospective life because of circumstance, or losing two because of an illicit abortion? Assuming the value of both the mother`s life and the fetus` are the same.

I know what adoption is and the hurdles that are in the way. What I`m saying is that with some moral guidance and some discipline, we would greatly reduce those numbers and the problems associated with it. Abortion wouldn`t even be an issue at all if it weren`t for "Roe v. Wade" making it the law of the land, and illegally at that I might add. I`m not saying these problems would be solved but they might not seem so powerless to stop. Doing the right thing isn`t always easy but it doesn`t mean we don`t try.

Its not a real creature yet. And isn`t human until born. Its a parasite living off a host body, incapable of sustaning its own life functions. Are we letting tape worms, or other non-human beings testify in court? I don`t think a heart beat in anyway says it "wants" to be born into this world. It has no mind of its own, simply a parasite. Stupid pro-life people need to take their religion of of the laws. I`m looking at you Janet (Folger) Porter, President of the group Faith2Action. Seperation of church and state please.

"Its not a real creature yet. And isn`t human until born."

    FAIL FAIL FAIL!

It`s a human at conception, just an underdeveloped one.

I am pro choice, but not in the case that it is for conception.

"I got pregnant and I want to get rid of it." Not good enough.

Losing the right to kill her baby.

I`m willing to take that loss.

How does somebody being pro choice define them as someone who would get an abortion? I personally wouldn`t choose that option if I had an unborn child, but that`s what it is: a choice. Just because I wouldn`t choose it doesn`t mean I have to force everyone else to as well.

This isn`t even close to testimony. It`s just a bit of cheap courtroom theatre, one giant appeal to emotion logical fallacy.

You`re too young to remember but they weren`t always called Pro Choice. They used to be called Pro Abortion. They changed it to choice to make it sound better. They started calling abortion clinics "Planned Parenthood" for the same reason.

No it`s not. If im the one to voluntarily kill another thing I am murdering... if I were the bird in the case, wanting to kill my own eggs I would be making a sacrifice.

It`s not a human until it can think and live outside the womb. It`s as simple as that. They need yo just make a cut off date for abortions.

18 days it may have a heart beat, doesn`t have the cromosones to make it A HUMAN! Babies are often aborted NATURALLY by the second month because it wasn`t formed correctly, therefore it is incomplete. This is just semantics, the guy is still talking out his backside.

It`s only about planning parenthood as an afterthought. They`ve always been abortion clinics first and foremost...and there are so many because it`s a booming business.

unwanted children often become unstable so:
children growing up to be murders could have been prevented by abortion.

Trypno: Planned Parenthood`s main goal, when it was founded by Margaret Sanger, was a method by which to fulfill the goals of eugenics by not only aborting children but also sterilizing `imbeciles`. Imbeciles, by their definition meant blacks, the poor, and the retarded.

@danky: No Kidding, Right? I mean, in today`s society, can you believe we still have people trying to use abortion as a contraception? Then think it is ok to pump killing chemicals and needles with vacuums to stop it from happening, because they are "not ready"? I can`t believe people still have to stand up and try to protect the child`s right to life. Seems like a bad sci-fi movie, huh?

DJDouble. We really should look at why we still need abortions as an option and i believe it is directly corelated to the abstenence-only political/religous movement across the world. No one wants to kill something or go thru the process of having a fetus taken from their who-ha, but America in particular has done a horrible thing, in that we have spent all of our time spreading the message of abstenance only and not put enough emphasis on contraceptives and PLANNING PARENTHOOD. Im speaking domestically and internationally.

No, he`s actually right. It`s not like anyone thinks that Planned Parenthood is still a front for eugenics, but Margaret Sanger lived back when eugenics were the popular thing.
