our school used to have slave auctions, it was in general an auction to raise money for ...something. kids volunteered to be slaves and then people bid on them and the next day the "slaves" would do whatever their winner said (within school policy), they could even provide them with things to wear...my senior year the changed the name to "servant auction"

This was a little weird I admit but im sure the teacher didn`t choose all black children to be the slaves. Im so sick of this being such a touchy subject. Not everything unorthodox someone does to a black human being has is racist damn.

wow when I was in 5th grade my teacher gave us "pay checks" based on our grades. We then had to pay rent on our desks and classroom stuff. Those of us with bad grades.. were poor and lived on "skid row" and couldn`t afford to buy trips to the bathroom, or balls for recess.
I thought that was bad...I can`t imagine how this plays out on the playground.

Why is slavery always brought back to a race issue? Before Europeans made their way into Africa, the majority of the slave population were fellow whites. When they made it to Africa, the majority of people selling blacks into slavery were *GASP* OTHER BLACK PEOPLE! I imagine it was the same way in Asia, the majority of slaves were most likely Asians

...What is wrong with that teacher? It doesn`t even matter whether the kid was white or black. Being made to stand up somewhere while people "feel" you and look at you to determine your "price" is just f*cked up. Sometimes I can`t believe the sh*t that people try to pull these days.

it`s all a part of the thinking-feeling spiral, which is an effective method in creating and teaching lessons, especially social studies.

guaranteed that kid is never going to forget what he learned, despite his parents feeling offended.

Unless all the "slaves" were black there is no racism in it. If this were a white kid no one would say a thing, and that is the racist part.

And this is why you shouldn`t tell your parents what you learned in school that day. Just mumble "nothing" like a normal kid, or you`re going to end up looking like an ass on the news.

People need to grow the heck up. This sounds like a variation of the brown eyes/blue eyes experiment: http://www.janeelliott.com/ Albeit, poorly done...I don`t think Jane Elliott had auctions in her original experiment.

I wish my teachers were this interesting and immersive in their lesson. In this lesson, the kid actually learns a little something of what slaves went through, instead of just hearing "it was bad and stuff" 400 times. It`s stupid parents like her that are ruining a lot of education these days. Remember, it`s better to learn by doing than it is by learning.

Yes it probably was humiliating. However was that not to be the point of the lesson. Slavery was not just wrong but it was humiliating to be such. This is to understand the effect. The teacher should have also made other ethnic groups pose as slaves so they can understand what it`s like.

The class was seperated. He wasn`t made a `mock slave` because he was black. He was made a mock slave because he was in whatever half of the class. Then his mom goes ahead and says it`s all racist. All my money goes to say that kid only said he didn`t like it after he saw how his mother OVER-reacted to it. God damn you drating pussies. Grow up. You felt degraded? Good, now you have a minor drating idea of how the slaves felt. There was nothing racist here ..only ignorance

The kid was not ostracized in any way. He was part of the 50/50 split. I am sure there were black kids on the masters side too- is it racist for them to bid on white kids? His mom is a fool. He probably didn`t think it was an issue until he talked about his day with his mom and she`s like "you should feel upset about this!"

I think she needs to be educated about what racist means...

Okay, so the class is broken in half, 50% masters, 50% slaves, and then the woman goes, "It`s racist." Oh, yeah, so drating racist that your son was part of a class lesson about history. Let`s just stop teaching history because you feel it`s racist. Let`s stop teaching about the colonization of the Americas, too, since that`s racist against Indians. America, this is why "you dumb."

The woman was wrong--it was not racist. If they groups had been chosen because of their race, there would be a defensible argument for something akin to racism, but this? Not at all. She doesn`t get to wave around the "racist" gun every time race relations are discussed, taught or analyzed. Sit down, honey, your ignorance is showing.

We had a mock slave auction in high school as a fundraiser for sports teams. It was 100% voluntary, and the "slave"s simply had to follow the master around for a day carrying his books and taking his notes and such.

Jeeze, I wish people would quit making themselves a minority. My Mom is a history teacher and she has to teach the same subject. She doesn`t do a slave auction, but she does something similar. She asks everyone to make sure they`re comfortable with it and they don`t have to participate if they don`t want to. I think the teacher probably should have been a little more sensitive, perhaps. Anyone should have been able to see the potential outcome of doing something so touchy.

I guess the real message here is that its better to be politically correct rather than to gain any insight into a horrible period in our history. What harm could that possibly cause? Unless you are one of those people who worry about history repeating itself.

Don`t get me wrong though. I`m sure that this lesson could have been presented in a better way, but I`m going to give this teacher some slack for being human with good intentions.

Should have had three things, 1) let the students choose whether they wanted to be slaves or masters, of course no one would choose slave, 2) not have the touching part, and 3) make it a two day thing where they switch roles.

The kid didn`t look too sincere though. My guess is that he told his mother and she blew it out of proportion and told the kid to play along.

They should apologies to every one who had to take part in the lesson. I find it hard to believe that none of the educators who new about this lesson plan protested before hand. They should have know it was wrongm and they shouldn`t have needed a 10 year old to tell them.

"I understand the point of the demonstration, but asking the students to touch the kids is inappropriate and crosses a line."

That is the only part that should be an issue. If there is going to be physical contact involved, the kids should be given an opportunity to opt out.

I don`t feel like it was "racist", it`s not like she said "ok all the black students will be slaves" ya know? it was a 50/50 chance he would end up a slave, so it`s not that shocking. Racist would be "hey you`re black, why don`t you be a master so I don`t get in trouble"

It was a good lesson, but I feel like it was a bit degrading for the slaves, and though that was the point, maybe they should have ALL been slaves, that would give a better lesson. For 5th grade though- I feel like they are too immature for something like this. Maybe more highschool age would be appropriate? Or just find another way to get the lesson across. Poor teacher didn`t realize I don`t think, I think they had good intentions.

"That would actually be more tame, I think. What are they going to do? Line them up and sort them by those who can work and those who can`t? Obviously they aren`t going to execute anybody."

so then why hasnt that been done if its "more tame"? it would apparently be alot less controversial and it would save alot of people time and money wouldnt it?

tnh even as a black guy im not really angry about this... the teacher could have done a better job at doing what she did and ill even go the extra mile to say that im more mad than anything that she got caught...if you are going to do something make sure you do it so that you cant get into any trouble for it...

"happened along time ago....who cares anymore...some people just cant let go...it wont happen again even if we forget about it, this should be a new rule for caring about ancient history..."

Don`t count on it not happenning again. If history has taught us anything, it`s that the public has a short memory and because of that, we`re doomed to repeat it.
It`s important we heed the lessons of history. And if you want to impress upon the students the horrors of slavery, reverse the positions. Let the black kids auction off the whits ones. Personally, I think this was a very good lesson for the kids. We learn a lot more by participating in something rather than just reading about it.

"he went home and complained :|"

The mother says he came home and complained. He sounds like a kid that has been coached to say something. The mother is clearly the one who was offended here.

"dont get pooty at me when you do it all the time too when there is news about a black guy doing something to a white guy."

If there had been any segregation at all, this would be a racial issue... but there wasn`t. It was a color blind lesson on what it is like when people are denigrated and treated as objects. If the kid actually got offended, which I doubt he did, then he learned a valuable lesson.

Teaching our children that slavery is wrong!

Actually not a horrible idea in principle. in doing this you let the children know the feeling of being treated like an animal, or at least less than human. If one of the children didnt happen to be black, this would have never have been a concern. At 10years of age, I dont believe the kid was truly any more affected by the experience than any of his white counterparts. Like most cases, it was probably the mother who put the thoughts into his head afterward.

We MUST remember the horrors of slavery, and auctioning off a child is certainly a good way to do it. If I were the teacher, however, I would have called the parents in for a meeting after school to talk about it, and then looked for volunteers from the student body to act as slaves, making it clear that anyone could be a slave.

Yes, we enslaved blacks, but there`s no reason why a mock auction of slavery couldn`t auction off a white child, and have a black child bid on him or her. The lesson would be the same.

Or, perhaps, I`d find volunteers from the community or faculty who thought it was important to teach this lesson. Perhaps that would be better.

Forcing a student up on the auction block, however, is awful, insensitive, and grounds for serious disciplinary action.

I remember that lesson at my school, it wasn`t about actually segregating black & white students. It was about teaching how humiliating and degrading slavery is.

It probably played out like this when he got home.
Child - "Hi Mom"
Mom - "Hi how was your day?"
Child - "Oh it was great! Today, in social studies, it was so much fun, we learned about slavery, and they split up the class and me and Robby, and Trevor we were slaves, and then Cindy and that girl I like Mandy came over and were touching my leg, and Mandy actually bought me for the project, so I actually got to talk to her."
Mom - "Oh my lord, are you... oh my... are you serious! Where`s Jesse Jackson`s phone number... lawsuit money coming to this family right here, what what!"
