I think we all know what the real problem here is, this poor child`s name is Seb. SEB!!!
What parent would commit such an atrocity on an it`s unsuspecting offspring!?

I dont get why religion cant be learned in schools. Really if you need to learn filosofi, you need to learn about christianity, islam, hinduism and so on and so on. Its more of a culture study. Im not religious, and i think this is funny as hell! mostly cuz the "christian volunteer" is not trying to "teach" about jesus but "preach"!

LOL I love it.

But I do have to agree with some of the other comments here - this guy did bait the "Christian Volunteer" and evoked the exact response that he was looking for.

That being said, I love the cactus in the hat...

He was perfectly right in what he did, the reason there is a seperation of church and state in every civilised country is because every religion is a dictatorship/theocracy. If Muamar Khaddafi is bad then so is the pope. They`re both tyrannical dictators of their own little countries, except the pope gets carte blanche to cover up his and his staffs crimes in every country of the world. Actually come to think of it so did Khaddafi until recently, and he`s being told to keep his mouth shut about that and they`ll move him to a safe place... Hmmm... maybe that was an order from the catholic church, and not the U.N.?

@Kalimata: Oh I totally agree with that, I`m not condoning his actions at all. There are bad eggs in either group, as well as good eggs. I`m not going to discuss the frequency of which because it`s going to cause unnecessary confusion and arguments.

I find that hard to believe. Not that an atheist was annoying a school chaplain, but that the emails he sent were clever.

Sure mate, there was some funny stuff said, I`ll not disagree. The Magic Jew thing had me giggling.

The thing is, in order to gain true ground for the athiests and alt/non Christians, tyrades like the one in the "exchange" serve only to give ammunition to the Fundy Christians to use to show how they are persecuted.

It may sound like I`m trying to make a mountain out of a mole-hill, but in order to attain true equality, and more importantly, true seperation of Church and State, we need to be as restrained and legitimate as possible.

Me, I`m a dyslexic agnostic. I sit up at night wondering if there really is a Dog...

Personally I have to say that the athiest father was being a complete ass.

As a practicing Christian, you should expect, and be ready to answer any question, or counter a legitimate argument from a non Christian. It`s a part of "Faith".

As a practicing Christian you are not required to put up with stupidity, antagonistic attempts, and blatent acts of mockery, which is what the father in the e-mails was doing.

A simple checkmark in the NO box would have sufficed, and would have saved athiests and non christian believers everywhere from having to explain, and apologize for the moronic and disrespectful antics of one who is purportedly a subscriber to the athiest philosophy.

Athiest =\= arsehole.

I would be on the "chaplain"s side in all of this but there are three points that make me feel he deserved every last email.

1) He lied about checking the box. Anyone who has ever made a document in word knows that you have to specifically select the pre-checked box from the symbols list. He obviously knows the difference since the other one is the simple plain box. Who in the world "accidentally" selects the wrong box first time around and then magically gets the second one right without noticing?

2) He claims to be a Christian and lies to cover his own ass. Even if someone wanted their child exposed to religion would you really want them to be led there by someone who has no qualms about cherry-picking what ethical qualities of that religion he chooses to use?

3) The guy looks like Champ Kind "WHAMMY!"

This is what this guy does. He has an entire website dedicated to doing stuff like this. Every other time people find it funny, but the second it is about a religious play off of school property, people get offended.
There is no way that box was checked by accident, it is clearly not a hand written check. It takes thought to put that symbol on that paper. That guy was just trying to cover his tracks because someone spoke up about it. He was presumptuous and wrong, and someone told him that.
And David has a valid point, where is the spiritual roundness? I am sure there is going to be no mention of Pagans during this "informational play". Seems biased to me.

@Wobble

"he should be able to see past that and understand the trip teaches them why we have Easter."

Darryl says:

"It`s important for children to have balance in their life and spirituality is as important in a childs life as everything else."

Clearly he is not arranging this to teach the kids about the story of Easter. In his own words, PLAINLY SPELLED OUT RIGHT THERE, that he is concerned with the "sprituality" of the children, not educating them about a story.

That`s not education. That`s attempted conversion.

Untrained "Christian Volunteers/Chaplains" have no place being in a position of authority over children in an educational establishment.

If he wants to expose these kids to spirituality, he can invite them to attend church OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL HOURS, not drag them out of the classroom during the school day.

The parent is an idiot. Even if he isn`t religious he should be able to see past that and understand the trip teaches them why we have Easter. It`s up to the kid if he believes it or not. The parent comes across as a smug git and I feel sorry for the kid growing up with him as a father.

To those saying he is attacking idea: I agree that the approach the chaplain takes, especially the already ticked box, is wrong. I wouldn`t want to have a child that is exposed to some form of semi-compulsory religious teaching. That doesn`t change the fact that in the letters he comes of as a smug arse and is at times just being a d*ck. I`m all for challenging ideas, but his approach was juvenile at best, he could have done it a lot better.

Some of it was pretty funny, but David is an idiot. Darryl made it very clear within the first couple of emails that he didn`t have to go and the check in the box was a mistake. David clearly has way to much time on his hands and the mentality matching that of a 10 year old.

you are partially right beaceuse religion class is not in school system, but comparing nazi camp with simple preaching is dumb. i respect your and his atheism, but in those emails he insults religion without real arguments. the funniest part of it is how this chaplain shows his patience and understanding for his beliefs, while he is insulting him. so tell me who is better person. maybe his kid could learn something from him...

He wasn`t taking the piss just to be taking the piss. He was trying to make a very good point. A point which Daryl obviously missed, just as most Christians to.

Let me put it to you this way, if your child`s sex ed teacher sent home a permission slip for an outing to a strip club, with the "allow my child to participate" box already checked, wouldn`t you be like WTF?

Well this "councilor" did pretty much the same thing.

@ruthless1990

"i guess no one respects anyone`s right to have a different belief system to their own."

Darryl is welcome to his beliefs.

He is not welcome to try to teach children based on his personal beliefs, during school time, through the school`s system.

He is not a teacher.
He is not TRAINED as a teacher.
He is not QUALIFIED as a teacher.

Yet he is being allowed to act as such, taking the kids to be taught something for the sole reason that he personally believes it`s a good idea...he being the untrained, unqualified person...rather than it being because it`s on the curriculum.

If some other untrained person were allowed into the school and then given permission to take the kids away to a Nazi rally, because that person believed the kids would benefit from it...you`d be okay with that?

It`s not ABOUT respecting Darryl`s belief; it`s about him inappropriately exposing other people`s children to it.

Reply
Male 2,850
To repeat earlier sentiments: David is not complaining about Darryl`s religion...David is complaining about Darryl abusing his position to get around a LAW stopping him from preaching religion to David`s child.

And to anyone complaining of David mocking a religion; any religion is just an idea, and ideas don`t have any feelings to hurt. We SHOULD challenge ideas when we think there`s no merit in them.

Because when stupid ideas don`t get challenged, people get HURT.

We don`t bleed people any more to let out "bad spirits" when they`re sick. Nor do we slaughter animals to guarantee a good harvest any more. Nor do we enslave fellow human beings and treat them like property...

...because at some point, somebody challenged the ideas and said "hang on a minute...these are pretty stupid ideas", and things started to change.

PEOPLE deserve respect. IDEAS deserve critical examination.

And no, I`m not a bible thumper; I am an atheist. David just seems to have issues and is very childish. Darryl, on the other hand, had a lot of restraint and should be commended.

He is not being a jerk at all, here is why:

After the SECOND email that David Thorne sends, which is obviously a joke, the chaplain, rather than just ignoring it, and going on with his life, tries to manipulate David into having his child go by pulling the "the important message of hope that the story of the resurrection gives," line, and then throughout the exchange, he continues to antagonize and manipulate, even suggesting that David is a poor parent because he hasn`t indoctrinated his child into any faith.

@Davymid
You have a clear bias, and so do I. Darryl wasn`t being any more tolerant, he was going about as far as he could without losing his job. His messages were TREMENDOUSLY passive aggressive and had thinly veiled personal attacks. If I suggested you were a poor parent because you weren`t raising your children with the same ethics as taught by science, I`m sure you would get your panties all bunched up too.

I think some people on this thread need to learn up on who David Thorne is. He`s a semi-professional online troll/comedian. To think of his posts here as anything representative of atheists in general is like proclaiming Chris Rock`s views on race (count how many times he says Cracker, for example) are a typical, representative sample of the sentiments of your average African-American. This is just what he does. Sheesh, people. Another example of his work:

pnolan: Those e-mails went beyond being just `absurd` they were mocking and disrespectful.

All of the children were required to have parental approval and it`s obvious with the graphics on the permission slip and the textual content of the slip what the presentation was about.

There was no stealth or deception as to what the parents were signing for and there was no propaganda involved.

David was being a turd, Darryl on the other hand was being respectful of his wishes, but that wasn`t enough to satisfy David. David tried his best to piss off Darryl and it didn`t work.

This shows that Darryl was a more tolerant and level-headed person than David could ever hope to be. So much for atheist ethics being superior, David clearly demonstrated that to not be so.

For anyone who feels like he`s being unfair, or taking it too far, let me clue you in.

This is David Thorne. He spends his time having email back-and-forths like this with just about anyone and everyone he comes into contact with. They`re almost unfailingly hilarious. Please, read some of the other articles on the site to get a taste--you`ll see that he`s not just an atheist trying to be a big ol` meanie to the school chaplain, but rather he`s the sort of dude who tries to email drawings of spiders to people in lieu of cash. And once they`ve been rejected, he demands they return the picture to him. Via email.

He`s actually got a compilation book coming out soon, and if I wasn`t a poor college kid with tight purse strings, I`d have bought it already.
Wow, what a jerk. From this I can conclude that all atheists are like this guy: douches who don`t respect others` beliefs.
I give as much respect as is deserved to people who use deception to indoctrinate children into obedience to an organisation claiming ultimate authority on the basis that their interpretation of the book they wrote says they can.

So no, I don`t respect them. Why should I? They`ve done nothing to earn my respect. More like the opposite.

You`re free to believe anything you like. If you want to worship Ra, Epona, Kali, Odin, mice, acorns or Luke Skywalker, it`s all fine by me as long as you don`t shove children into it.

You`re not free to expect me to respect whatever stories you believe or make up. Tolerate, yes. Respect, no. Religion still gets far too much unearned and undeserved respect.

I`d also like to say, to those who are saying that they have concluded that all atheists are big ol` meanies because we denounce your religious beliefs- try to not talk down to an adult that hasn`t figured out santa isn`t real yet.

Let`s just simplify things for a second.

1. If the production depicting a contradiction of your supposed "lack of belief" is a problem, check the second box. I think the parent was actually instructed to do so twice.

2. If you`re that worried that your child may be indoctrinated, check the second box and leave it at that.

3. For someone clinging so hard to fact, he obviously fails to see both sides of the argument by simply attending the play and properly guiding his child according to his own prescribed worldview, religious or otherwise. And he`s afraid of his child being indoctrinated? Riiiight.

4. Don`t beat a dead horse by being a douche, the answers are simple and there right there in front of you. If you cling to fact, then what did that sophomoric email exchange accomplish?

Pot. Kettle. Black.

@RPGillespie and from your response I can conclude that all Christians are sensitive idiots. See how that logic works?

At first I thought he was taking it a bit far but then I reminded myself that this is religion he`s talking about. Never mind about that! Very nice rant there. My guess is that he was trying to pry some sort of response from the "christian volunteer" and thus get him in trouble whilst simultaneously ransacking the man`s obsolete beliefs. Call him a troll... sure, but he`s justified.

Anyway, my favorite part was about Pikkiwoki.

Also danthew`s comic makes a good point.

i`m sure this man is just fed up with the fact that his government has justified putting someone in charge of all the children that has an obvious agenda. granted he may be "taking it out" on this guy, but it`s warranted, in my opinion.

Wow the atheist is such a douche, not to mention half of his arguments are absolutely brutal analogies. I`m not a religious man in any sense, but you have stupid people on both sides of the coin. He is one of them.

While David`s trolling gets a bit tiring, it`s worth it, as it elicits the most absurd thing ever written down by anyone:

"There`s an old saying that life without religion is life without beauty."

No, certainly it is impossible for someone to appreciate the breathtaking beauty of our world by trying to understand it how it really is. I mean, that`s just boring. In order to fully appreciate it, you have to put it into the framework of an ancient fairy tale.

I enjoy a good laugh at christ`s expense, but it was a bit
much to insult a person`s faith that way.

But if you are gonna be a douche.... do it well and he did!

I have seen this thing a million times and the thing that bugs me is the way atheists seem to champion this guy David as if he were some charming wit. I can inform you that he is not. Lets hope his kid doesn`t grow up with such a disgusting attitude towards other people, regardless of his faith.

tl;dr
i read a little but got tired after a while.
i think it is ok to teach the basics of Christan faith as long as other faiths are also represented. i believe it is important that we understand the concepts that others hold dear to them in order to communicate and understand them as people better. I for one wish i was taught more about Islam. I do not think that it should be taught for any moral or religions reason in public schools.

Best line, "As I trust my offspring`s ability to separate fact from fantasy, I am happy for him to participate in your indoctrination process on the proviso that all references to `Jesus` are replaced with the term `Purportedly Magic Jew.`"

27b/6 is a great website though, there`s a lot of funny stuff on there.
