I`d imagine the point is that those bowls get bloody hot and the mud protects him/gives a mouldible surface to rest them on.

First of all, it`s mud. Secondly, I doubt it`s a right of passage, as there`s an older man wearing all the same "accessories" behind him. I bet this is just a religious ceremony and they`re monks of some sort.

In the US we merely submit our youths to four years of painful, unrelenting humiliation called "High School."

and sometimes it also involved poo

Yeah we have Rites of Passage in the U.S. it`s entirely a matter of your family not participating.

As inane as it might sound, the first time I got to plan a Hunting Trip with my Father and my Brothers was a very big thing for me. Getting my drivers license, becoming old enough to vote, graduating high school, going through boot camp, all of these things helped me realize what it meant to be an adult.

It means having the temperance not to slap the s#!t outta some punk ass kid, just because you can and he totally deserves it. and instead striving to be a mentor and set a better example.

Now if you want to know the true art of manliness visit this link, Oh my especially the Mardudjara Aboriginal practice of sub-incision. That is totally f*cked up.

"As opposed to the US, where we have no traditions or rites of passage."

^^^Says the woman that wouldn`t have to do it.

Seriously though, if you don`t have any traditions in your family, blame your own damn family. Don`t get on the web and complain about the US, just because your family sucks I`ve got my problems with the US, but that isn`t one of them. We, my family, had plenty of traditions. And you can find rituals all over the place here, you just have to look.

I believe in the tribes of New Guinea you become a man by swallowing sucking the older males of the tribe off and swallowing. I think I`d rather have the poo on me than do that..

meh. there are worse rites of passage than this...

like getting circumcised by an unlicensed doctor, and having to heal all alone in the wilderness with no food or water.... only milk....

There are far worse ones. In fact, this one is rather mild in comparison. It`s just temporarily unpleasant. Much better than, for example, having part of your penis cut off with a not particularly sharp and completely unsterilised knife, then having the wound rubbed with dirt and ashes, then spending a week in the wild while it scars up...or it gets infected. Maybe you die, maybe you can`t get a proper erection again (due to the scarring).

That`s the Xhosa manhood ritual. Die Antwoord`s extraordinarily crude song "Evil Boy" has brought it to some attention, because it`s primarily a message from a Xhosa man who rejects the custom very vehemently. Traditionalists say he`s an evil boy, so he`s taken the label to throw it in their faces while massively insulting them - Evil Boy is more manly than they are, they are lower than poo, they are just holes that poo comes out of. Great song when you understand it better.

Makes sense to me. It`s sort of like a symbolic primer for marriage...sever the guy from his ego with a rite of humiliation.

Anybody find out exactly what this is? I`m still searching.
