So Auburn wants Union reform- I don`t think anyone can argue with that. The unions have become corrupt and antiquated; they must be forced to modernize.

Taking away the central pillar of what makes a union a union (collective bargaining rights) isn`t reform, though.

As a side note; the base annual salary for those top two bus drivers is approximately $75,000 annually. They earned the rest of the money through safety related bonuses (which get bigger for every year without an accident, with no cap) and a union agreement in which the most senior workers get first dibs on any offered overtime. After safety bonuses for decades of accident free driving the bus drivers are earning six figure incomes- then the overtime is icing on the cake.

Incidences like these are rare, though not entirely justifiable. However, reform and elimination are not the same; this is a distinction that has been made, previously.

Hmmm... good point actually. The problem with that though is Merit systems are also plagued with politics.

Did you know that the highest paid (govt.) employee in Wisconsin is not that Governor. Not a legislator. Not a state official of any kind.

It is a bus driver. Because of seniority, he makes over $129,000 per year. Second place?

Another bus driver. $127,000.

"Why is it so unreasonable to ask for higher salaries AFTER a surplus is achieved AND the economy picks up?"

It isn`t.

Salary needs to be based on Merit and Value though. NOT seniority or power plays, which is how Unions operate.

LOL Of course the protesters are extremists.

This is basically the argument.

Governor of Wisconsin: Okay guys. We don`t have the money to pay all your demands, period.

Union members: Oh hells no. drat dat muthadrata. We wont our handouts muthafudgeka!

Governor of Wisconsin: I`d give `em to ya if I could, but there is NO MONEY.

Union members: Well cut other programs like ROADS and HEALTHCARE and SOCIAL SERVICES so we can get our $78,000 AVERAGE SALARY FOR 9 MONTHS OF WORK.

Governor of Wisconsin: Are you nuts? We are gonna vote on this. Legislature, you ready?

Democrat Legislators: Can`t pass it without us. We will be over here in Illinois, ignoring your call to session, even though we are required by our office to participate. We weren`t elected to actually VOTE for the good of the PEOPLE were we?

Governor of Wisconsin: Well poo.

A bit of a misnomer to have individuals allowed to spin fictions on "Fox NEWS."

If they want to be a new station, they need to be News all the time. This opinionated pundit ruse is sheer misdirection.

@Cajun247

It actually makes perfect sense if you think about it.

Think of MSNBC as a mime. The silent and somber mime is a very mono-faceted portrayal of reality. Therefore- in order to acurrately represent reality Fox HAS to be an over-the-top gand Opera! Because the theatre of an Opera balances the melancholy of a mime...

Wait... that doesn`t make sense. Because then only the people that watched BOTH the mime AND the Opera, while also knowing what was and what was not theatre could see the thin threads of reality resonating...

So yeah- you`re right... that`s a wimpy excuse. NVM

Levying restrictions on Unions isn`t what the governor is trying to do. Solving a budget issue isn`t what he`s trying to do (as the unions have willingly accepted virtually all austerity measures,) this is about preventing the Public Unions from having the ability to collectively bargain- which effectively busts the union. Of all the core functions of a union collective bargaining is the keystone.

It`s an unneccesary measure that the governor is refusing to drop, even with all other tenants of his agenda WILLINGLY COMPLIED with.

@KPres

Unions don`t belong in the public sector... why? They have as much of a right to get together- go to their bosses and say "Hey, these guys over here? They`re getting compensated above what we are and we`re working just as hard, if not harder- how is this fair?"

Especially when in most cases it is illegal for public sector workers to strike and sue. They already give up those two rights just by being employeed in the public sector.

Additionally, to the people crying about public sector unions "screwing the taxpayer" you`re being naive. These people are compensated competitively to their private sector counter parts virtually across the board. Public Defenders, Social Workers and Teachers in Wisconsin all earn LESS than their private sector counter parts. These are people with professional degrees performing public services that virtually EVERY US CITIZEN uses.

These seem kind of mild though and they`ve been corrected when the reality of the issue came out, I don`t see a big problem with that. I actually appreciate it when any news station (yes, including fox) apologizes for mistakes made.

CrakrJak: Thanks for your response, from the top:

The "debate both sides" issue is a common creationist strategy, though it might not implicitly state creationism as a requirement, it`s a strategy used to slowly push creationism in view.

Palin didn`t cut special funding, but organized it into its own special group, most news outlets have actually apoligized for the error, nothing weird there.

She didn`t "Ban" books, but she did ask about how to ban them, the exact details seem to be fuzzy on what is said though, can`t really find the "exact" details, so I`d rather leave it neutral. She inquired, but took no actual action.

The AIP said that Palin was a part, the news picked up on that. Again, once it was known to not be true, the news generally retracted and apologized for the mistake.

Pat Buchanen personally said that she was a fundraiser for him in 1996. If this isn`t true, it`s not really so much the medias f

* Palin did not cut funding for special needs education in Alaska by 62 percent. She didn’t cut it at all. In fact, she tripled per-pupil funding over just three years.

* She did not demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library. Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a “What if?” question, but the librarian continued in her job through most of Palin’s first term.

* She was never a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, a group that wants Alaskans to vote on whether they wish to secede from the United States. She’s been registered as a Republican since May 1982.

* Palin never endorsed or supported Pat Buchanan for president. She once wore a Buchanan button as a “courtesy” when he visited Wasilla, but shortly afterward she was appointed to co-chair of the campaign of Steve Forbes in the state.

I like how every conservative tries to keep pointing out that "Other news does it too, only for the other side" and in part they might be right. But the big difference, is that they don`t fabricate false stories purely for their political agenda. And sometimes they might put their statements very pro-democrat and anti-republican. But at other times, they actually have republicans on the show and give them their full say without any ridicule.
They either bring on "weak" participants from the democratic side, or lace up the questions in favor of republicans every frigging time.

So no, Fox news =/= other news channels. Yes, they all have a bias to some degree. No, Fox news`s bias is not on the same level.

Unions have a place, and it`s not in the public sector. That being said, the proposed bill does not get rid of public sector unions, it just restricts their power to screw the taxpayers out of their money. Since you brought up jobs, restricting union powers allows for more jobs to be available due to giving workers the right to refuse unions. Only a liberal can twist giving workers more rights into "taking away the rights of unions".

I find it funny that people want to claim that "your side does it, mine doesn`t". Bottom line is that news agencies are owned by someone. Said person has a political stance, their news is likely to present it in that way. Rather than getting your panties in a bunch, maybe try looking at multiple news sources, instead of just jumping on the wagon (of either side). But I guess getting pissed off and yelling at each other is more fun than taking it upon yourself to be informed. You have the access, just too damned lazy

The public sector needs unions for the same reasons the private sector needs them. With unions, workers are able to bargain together with their employer in order to negotiate working conditions, benefits, and pay. Without these bargaining rights, everything that makes the public sector worth working for will be at the whim of the governor and the state, who has made it quite clear that he favors the rich and privatization.

As opposed to what conservatives said about the healthcare bill, Volsunga? I`m not sure how any of that is relevant anyways.

The fact is that the protesters are not "liberals," they`re citizens of the state of Wisconsin and of the United States of America- they have different beliefs on politics just like they have different views of coffee, religion, flavor of ice cream, and smoking after sex. You cannot paint such a large group of people into a box.

Some of my best friends are there protesting (I grew up in Wisconsin) and they voted for Republican officials. I myself voted for some Republican party members in the recent election and I would be out there protesting too.

The governor has no right to effectively eviscerate these workers ability to negotiate, especially while refusing to negotiate himself. This is about power and the governor simply does not want peoples to have powers they rightfully earned.

If we say that the rules of assembly don`t matter, then you have set legal precedent for the irrelevance of the Constitution. That will come back to bite you in the ass if they try doing something that is actually harmful. This is how democracies die.

If you don`t like what the government is doing, you have the right to vote them out of office and repeal their decision on the next voting cycle.

I ask this: what about corporate collusion? What about brining back trust busting, eliminating non-competitive business, reforming and enforcing anti-trust and monopoly laws?

Conglomerates and major corporations have more power and access to directly influence politics than ever before- but dergulation and lax politics haven`t done anything to stop it. Teachers in Wisconsin get compensation nearly 10% lower than their private sector counterparts (not including voluntary austerity measures) and yet corporate America has been seeing record fiscal success... who should we really be busting?

The scary thing is that the Democrats that ran away are acting like they`re unionizing. It doesn`t take a genius to figure out how bad that is for a democracy to function.

If this kills teachers` unions, then I`m all for it. They are what`s wrong with the American Education system. Collective bargaining isn`t a right, it`s a power. It`s a power that has been abused at the cost of childrens` education. State workers shouldn`t be allowed to unionize because all it does is milk money from taxpayers. Think of it as a lobby that the state can`t say no to.

there was a reason why wisconsin voted for walker (me included). he`s finding a way to clean up what the Dems and stupid Doyle started. I we elected a democrat again for governor, he`d most likely find a way to spend money, claiming it`ll help the deficit, instead of saving money, which is what Walker is trying to do. I may not like what he`s doing right now, but he`s one of the few politicians who are actually search for solutions without asking for millions of dollars.

As a very recent former resident of WI (and having many friends who are teachers there), I can say for a fact that this argument shouldn`t even be happening. State workers there have not gotten a cost of living increase in two years (voluntarily!) and have also taken up to 16 furlough days. 16!! And it wasn`t forced upon them, they took those furlough days in good faith to help the state decrease its deficit. Of course, Walker then wants even more. Taking away the collective bargaining rights of state workers in WI would do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the budget that the workers are not already volunteering to do themselves.

"The teachers are acting like selfish pigs at the tax payer`s trough!"

The "selfish teachers" have offered to volountarily take the cuts.

What they are protesting is the right to DISCUSS and NEGOTIATE their pay, which this bill would take away from them.

This bill is changing their RIGHTS to cope with a recession and then telling them no matter what, they can never again negotiate their salaries.

So, long story short, any arguments about them just wanting money was over a long time ago after they agreed to the cut volountarily.

Yet you`re repeating it... hmmm...

Quick question, do you get your news from FOX? I hear they lie.

Just remember that Fox News always lies. Even things that were formerly true are now lies after having been said by Fox News.

I`m on neither side of the parties, but why are liberals so butt hurt about everything? They have a president in office. I remember when Bush was in office and everyone was giving him and the republicans a hard time the republicans for the most part rode it out.

Yep, you fit the fox watching stereotype pretty well. - VDragonV

I`m not sure what you would have me do with that piece of information. I`m not a fox watcher, but I do know how to recognize unrestrained ignorant douchery

"lies" seems like a weak description.

I cant help but feel smug at both sides of this `conflict`. How petty and pathetic

News flash :: Every media outlet lies.

Fox lies heavily in favor of the right, MSNBC lies heavily in favor of the left and everyone else falls somewhere in between. Why does anybody even listen to them anymore?

The thought process of Unions befuddles me. We are in the midst of a terrible economy with record-setting debt levels and Unions want raises and extended benefits for their members?! I`d like a raise and extended benefits too, but guess what -- most of us in the private sector aren`t getting them...in fact, those of us who have jobs are counting our blessings. So STFU and get back to work.

Fire all of the teachers and hire new ones. They got a right to strike but not a right to a job. The teachers are acting like selfish pigs at the tax payer`s trough!

How often does a fanatic like that get invited to say something to the viewers at home? And he totally blows his chance to say why Fox lies, or state any other intelligent point.
