    @auburnjunky,
It`s refreshing to see that not everyone is an idiot. The production of one prius uses more oil than a hummer h2 uses in its entire life. Not to mention the nickel mines, where they get the materials to make the batteries, are completely void of life because they have destroyed the ecosystem.

I don`t know if its just me, but if you were sooooo concerned about "saving the planet" or "going green", wouldn`t it be better to ride a bicycle around or walk? 0 emissions.

Driving a low emission car is just half assing it.

No because riding a bicycle is a physical activity, which makes you breathe harder.

We exhale carbon dioxide, which apparently now is a pollutant, so riding a bicycle increases your carbon footprint, apparently.

@auburn Junky 2-3 g of CO2 per km for a cyclist is not exactly pollution when compared to a 100g/Km prius or a 345g/km landcruiser V8 petrol.

If you mean `quite recently` as in the industrial revolution then yes.

This backlash against Prius owners is verging on being as delusional as the prius owners belief that their cars are good for the environment. A Hummer better for the environment than a Prius? Even allowing for stupid production costs (and I bet the Hummer has a fair few of its own on that front) this is wishful thinking of the same brand as the prius owners.

Whereas if you don`t go overboard.. a 2nd hand small saloon beats the living daylights out of a newly built Prius in all respects.

"2nd hand small saloon beats the living daylights out of a newly built Prius in all respects."

    Agreed.

All of that is true by the way.

It pollutes more to manufacture and drive a Prius for 5 years (the life span of the NiCad battery) than it does the FIRST GENERATION HUMMER.

    That`s quite sad.

There`s some good tech in the Prius though. I wish they would prefect it.

Wow, what a douche. If you want to buy a hybrid and use less fuel, great. But you`re still using fuel, and you`re still emitting greenhouse gasses. Even if every driver in the world drove a Prius, there`d still be a market for oil, and there`d still be a motivation for both American and Arab oil companies to stir up conflict in the Middle East in order to give OPEC an excuse to artificially drive up prices- even more of a motivation, actually, because the reduced demand for oil created by everyone using less of it would naturally drive prices down.

"We exhale carbon dioxide, which apparently now is a pollutant, so riding a bicycle increases your carbon footprint, apparently."

Really, auburnjunky? You seem smarter than that, so I hope you`re trolling.
    1) The amount of carbon dioxide that a person exhales while riding a bike (or doing ANYTHING) is nothing compared to the amount of C02 emitted by a car`s tailpipe
    2) It`s not that C02 is, in and of itself, bad for the environment. It`s just that too much of it is. Just like in the body. If you are unable to get rid of CO2 fast enough through respiration- either because you have a problem with your lungs or pulmonary circulation, or because you are over-exerting yourself, C02 levels in your blood will rise. This, in turn, lowers the pH of your blood, which can cause serious health problems over a long enough time, or death if the pH gets low enough. That doesn`t mean C02 is bad for your body- it just means too much is. Same goes for the planet

@auburnjunky: Ok lets all just stop breathing then eh? lol

But I hardly think the act of exhaling carbon dioxide is as bad as driving a prius. Some other people made valid points, but my thought is: If you walk or bike at a leisurely pace, you won`t breathe all that much more then normal. You aren`t biking the Tour de France just to go to get milk from the store. lol

And my last point is, if you are so concerned about people breathing so much and killing trees, get out there and plant some more trees, or as Svampebob suggested, some good ole cannabis. =)

Gotta say this hybrid nonsense is driving me a little insane (geddit?). A Prius is not environmentally friendly, it`s just Toyota playing with the minds of people that want to think they are making a difference. The stuff needed to make the batteries for the Prius come from various sources, but all of them emit -so much- Co2 in their mining operations that the amount of CO2 produced for one Prius battery is more than the respective emission from a standard petrol fuelled vehicle. Sure they get great MPG and make you feel like you are making a difference, but they do more harm to the environment than most gas powered cars.

This car is a Prius. It`s the first body style. The hatchback-like body style wasn`t produced until 2004. Also, as far as the reports about the eco-friendliness of hybrids and their batteries: The main report which gave hybrid haters significant fodder to lob forth was an opinion piece and not a real, nor accurate, study. There have been several true studies published which verify decreased overall environmental impacts of hybrids as well as counter reports showing the biases of and misrepresentations of vehicle mileage/lifespan in the original opinion article. The owner of the Prius in the picture is an asshat, that`s a given. That doesn`t mean all people who drive a hybrid are. I know that this, like most of the B.S. posted on this site anymore is intended to be a troll device, but seriously, try harder if you`re at all serious about trying to make yourselves feel superior to some other group of people for whatever reason. It just makes you look lazy.

Guys. Obvious troll is obvious. JESUS!

I know we aren`t polluting the Earth by breathing. I know we aren`t choking trees by cutting CO2. I know the Prius is one of the most polluting cars on the planet.

I was just making an offhanded statement against the global warming doomsayers that are saying CO2 is a pollutant without qualifying it, there for scaring the common man into believing it.

    From chrn`s article:

"That mine, however, which supplies nickel for many industrial purposes and not just hybrid batteries, has cut pollution 90 percent since the 1970s."

So going from polluting a whole hell of a lot, to just a lot, is apparently acceptable. Eco-terrorists should not approve.

"Toyota says the batteries should go for 150,000 miles, which they predict to be the car`s life expectancy."

Is that all? My Civic has 292,000 miles on it. All I`ve ever done, is the regular maintenance. (Oil, Brakes, Tires, Timing Chain, etc.) I guess you could pay $3,000 for a new battery pack every 150,000 in addition to all regular maintenance.

Okay let me find some more. Wait a sec. That`s the only two claims? There is nothing else to defend the mighty Prius?

    Top Gear the the rescue!

Digging further into the Hummer Vs Prius lifetime cost claims - looking at the Pacific Institute`s review of CNW`s original claim - the claim is based on some serious skewed assumptions - like a lifespan of 300,000 miles for the Hummer and 109,000 for the Prius. It also seems to be based more around marketing predictions than solid science, and was dressed up to be more accurate than it actually is.

The company, CNW, behind the original claim have since revised their cost of ownership figures and Prius now comes in as lower than all large SUV`s, Hummer included.

@auburn - CNW never backed up their claims with raw data or transparent analysis. Since then they`ve revised their claims to the point that they no longer claim the hummer has a cheaper lifetime cost than the prius...

As for long mileages with regular service, you`ve still got 40,000 miles to go to beat my hard driven `89 Golf GTi (gone but not forgotten)

Problem is, cars are made so much better in Europe it seems. I think it`s because Americans are so spend happy, we will accept something of less quality if it meets our short term needs.

The American auto industry has lived by this for 30 years it seems.

Ya just can`t say American car companies do not care about quality. For example, Ford plants normally have a company working in their plants to sort incoming stock. Meaning, if 1 slightly bad part is found on the line, this company goes through 1000`s of parts to ensure each one is nothing less than perfect. And it isn`t just Ford doing things like this.
