I honestly thought this photograph was fake. It"s too beautiful to exist, isn"t it?

mhh guys this photo really looks real BUT it most certainly is an HDR shot, meaning multiple shots were taken on a tripod (a dark one, a regular one and a clear one) and composited together in Photoshop to get this kind of result.

Take the moon for instance: you can see both the bright crescent and the shadow crescent. This kind of contrast is just impossible to capture with one shot with current technology. What strikes me more, though (and I`m surprised it was not challengend by the NASA before posting it on their website) is that the sun`s position on the horizon looks completely inconsistent with the crescent on the moon. The shots might have been taken several hours apart then - I may be wrong on this part though, I`m no astronomer.

For all the folks that will shout `Shooooopped` now that they have this explanation, here`s what the Director of photography at National Geographic says: an HDR picture is OK if the shots were taken at the same time and the result re

If it is real, that view is almost worth living in one of those shacks, that are probably freezing, with no electricity... Well, scratch that. I`ll take just looking at the pic on the interwebz in my nice warm house. Still a cool pic though.

you joking vegascartman?

Of course you can take more than 3 second picture at the sky without blurring planets and the moon.

Mos of picture that are taken by night to the sky must have at least a couple of seconds in order to get the light from stars/planets.

Yep...the EXIF data on the image says it was a 3 second exposure. Sorry guys, it`s a fake!

Methinks it`s a fake. Unless those clouds looked exactly how you see them in the photo, it was a long exposure shot. The moon and planets move really fast around the Earth so if this shot was anything longer than 1/125th of a second or so, you`d see some motion blur from the moon and Venus.

Love it! Sometimes it`s so easy to forget how beautiful our world is because we get caught up in our day to day things which really don`t mean much. Thanks iab for posting this. :)

Hahaha. I`ve had this as my wallpaper for weeks. :) Everyone should watch NASA`s Astronomy Picture of the Day. :) You see a lot of beautiful (or informative or both!) pictures. I check it every day! (This picture showed up on February 2nd)

why is this titled `moon and venus caught over switzerland`?!

- that`s like calling it `tiny bench at sunset`!

- name pictures according to what your eyes are actually drawn to...

...still beautiful though!
