New hybrid airships are about ready to take flight, what do you think IAB? Do they have a chance?

I could throw a rock faster than that thing. If we line people up from point A to point B and throw packages to each other, we could better compete in the cargo business than this trash.

Yep, every decade of my life, the same old story by a whole new bunch of people... still waiting.

Again? They announce these stupid things every 10 years or so, then the companies vanish. I can remember this crap clear back to the seventies.

they have jet packs they just aren`t fuel efficient
"Didnt we learn anything from Hindenburg?"
Yeah, we did. Use helium, not hydrogen.

Actually, these look pretty cool. If they can pull it off without government subsidies, more power to them. If the can`t, f*** `em.

Zeppelins are simply one of the most economical modes of transportation ever designed. The only reason they went out of style is because some retarded German engineers decided to build the biggest one ever, fill it with flammable hydrogen, then act all surprised when it blew up, killing dozens of people.

It`s not a replacement for airplanes, but it would be a more reasonable alternative for journeys less than 1000 miles.

I totally think they should bring back airships for passenger travel. The airline industry is in sore need of a little class.

@RobSwindol ah, but your not considering the alternatives. Planes, and other modes of transport use FAR more resources to build relative to there sizes. A Boeing 747 would use a lot more resources and `fossil fuels` to build, to power and just as much to store.

New concept wind turbine airships are designed with new composites to sustain winds and extreme weather, making the use of having to store them in hangers possibly obsolete except for repairs. To keep themselves aloft requires less power, and they can transport far more goods in relation to weight of fuel than alternative modes of transport. It could be possible to power an entire fleet of Airship`s with the same amount of resources used to fly a single cargo plane.

@guy6870
Yes, but the point is that with rising fuel prices, a low power alternative may be the best option. Plus trains can`t move at 40mph in a straight line round the globe. They`re not comparable to trains and automobiles.
but do you have any clue how much energy and fossile fuels are used just to build one of those things? Not to mention the eminse hangers needed to build and store them.
You only need to do that once. Go ahead and count up all the hangars, runways, airports and factories jets use while you`re at it.

"drat yeah. Airships are the coolest, most economical and greenest modes of transport ever created. I`m so psyched by the idea of them returning."

They may be green to operate, but do you have any clue how much energy and fossile fuels are used just to build one of those things? Not to mention the eminse hangers needed to build and store them. OMFG! These monsters are about the least "green" thing to build.

That`s actually pretty cool.

Watch Dubai be the first place to have them for people to ride commercially.

There is no way these things can compete with Airbus and Boeing on the cargo playing field. It might only cost $1500/hour (for a 50 ton payload) to transport things, but the airship only moves at 40 mph.

Granted, the airship has a huge cargo capacity, but at 40 mph, even trains and trucks are more feasible options.

Barely a concept, doubt it`ll make it since I haven`t seen transportation change much since the 90s

Also modern airships don`t explode. at all. In case anyone makes a Hindenberg reference.
