i agree with simim, plus
i think your dog`s behaviour can show your future kids` personality. if he`s agressive, and asocial, there`s a high probability that your children will be like it.
if you spoil your dog and he turns out to be very disobedient and he tries to control YOU because you fail at leadership... try re-thinking your acts before deciding to be a parent

I tell everyone who wants to have a kid: have a pet first. If you cannot take care of an animal, you are not ready to take care of a child.

i agree with ScaryMeadow. if you`re too stupid to realize that owning a pet of any kind is a huge ongoing day-to-day responsibility, buy a stuffed animal. that said, with the responsibility also comes a lot of love and pleasure--who hasn`t laughed at some goofy video of a silly animal?

reply to all yall haters, yes I do have a dog and he loves me. also I think most of you people have a very clouded view on what a behaved dog is. most people let their dogs do whatever they want.

so in short,
go fawk yourself.

Rusty was my oldest and closest friend. He got older. Like many Labradors, he began suffering from arthritis in the joints of his rear legs. When I took him for walks, he found it harder and harder to go as far as he used to. He stopped running. One day I took him for a walk, and he collapsed. I carried him home in my arms.
My parents knew that Rusty was too old now. I was 20, so I should have known it too. But I refused to even discuss the possibility of putting him to sleep.
I took him on walks, but this consisted of going outside the house a few yards so he could urinate. His legs were so bad from arthritis that he would collapse into his own poo as he tried to go. So I bent beside him, and held him up as he went, holding his haunches. It was disgusting. It was sickening. I never minded. One day he started yelping and whining with every limping step he took. My parents took me to the vet. He told me that Rusty was living in constant pain, and to keep him like this was crue

As I grew older, I went away to school. I thought Rusty would forget about me, but whenever I returned for holidays he would see me, run back to the kitchen and fetch his blanket and come up to me. He enjoyed playing tug of war with it. One day I tugged too hard and ripped it a little. He stared at the blanket for a while, and took it away. After that he never played tug of war with me - he would simply let go if I pulled - but he would always greet me with it in his mouth when I came home.

I continued to be mean to him, especially when watching TV. He made a very good pillow, so I would make him lie down in front of the TV and then lie back with my head resting on him. Patiently, sometimes for hours, he would lie there. If he tried to get up, I would firmly push him back down, and he would obediently lie down again.

I would only see him when I got home from school. I did not realize it at the time, but

When I was six years old, my parents got a golden Labrador puppy. His name was Rusty. He was a tiny thing, and enjoyed biting the end of a blanket and being dangled in the air by it. Soon he was too big for this, but he never stopped loving that blanket, so we let him have it, torn and disgustingly soaked with dog slobber as it was. He would lie in the kitchen and bite into it and sit there with his face buried in it.

Being a young boy, I was naturally pretty mean to him. I would tackle him, have play fights with him, steal his things. But not once did he ever bite me. He always forgave my behavior and was desperately happy to see mf again if I had been away. I did not give much thought to this at the time.

I know everyone is ragging on `bongsmoka420` but I don`t think he means beat the poo out of your dog every chance you get guys. I have two Saint Bernards, they are big and they are strong. We have had to use physical force on them on rare occasions (tackling, pinning, scruffing etc) due to them deciding to try and assert their dominance over us (or another dog) and not obeying their commands. This was mostly during their puppy phase (but as a puppy they are 100+lbs)and usually at a place with a lot of stimuli like the dog park. Obviously the force you use is relative to the size and breed of your dog. You probably woudn`t ever need to tackle your chiahuahua to the ground and pin them there...but when a 170lb Saint Bernard decides they aren`t going to come and keep running circles around you, how else are you going to stop their momentum?

My puppy, Dio, doesn`t need a single touch to understand when I`m mad. I just say NO! in a deep voice and instant tail between legs, hunkered down puppy. Then I feel bad and walk over and start to apologize and the little buger rolls over for tummy pets!!!!! I never do it right off of course, he`s in trouble, I can`t reward him for chewing my laotop cord! lol (9 month old puppy)

@bongsmoka420 - "to communicate effectively with your pet you must understand that it cannot understand your words, but it can understand emotions projected through your tone of voice and most definately through violence"

No! Through tone of voice and body language, you dratin idiot!! Threat and physical presence is easily enough to dominate a dog unless they`ve already been subject to your cruelty

this was written by one of those ignorant people who think you shouldn`t lay a finger on your dog. this is very short sighted view. to train your dog you must establish yourself as the dominant figure in the house hold. with some dogs doing this may be more or less difficult and can require different means of communication. to communicate effectively with your pet you must understand that it cannot understand your words, but it can understand emotions projected through your tone of voice and most definately through violence. it may not always be necessary, nor am I saying that you should harm or injure your pets, but some breeds are more dominant by nature so your reaction to this must be more radical in order to be effective.

in other thoughts, yes, canines can pack quite the psi in their bite, but we as primates, are more superior. there is no reason for a human to be afraid of a dog. dogs only have their teeth and jaws as a weapon. we have teeth, fists, elbows, knees, and

Damn it, fighting back tears, and I don`t even have a dog.

I`m lucky enough, though, to have friends who are practically family, who have always had two dogs. I was around for their last two passing, and the absolute emotional destruction that caused, and seeing them adopt their current two and see them go from unhappy, abandoned dogs, to happy and loved members of their family.

July 12, 2010. I spent my night awake, holding my 22 (yes 22) year old bichon. In the morning, I drove him to the veterinarian`s office..sat on the floor with him in my lap. He looked in my eyes, I looked in his..he stopped crying, and I started. RIP I love you and miss you still.

I disagree with a lot of this. Dogs are dogs. Not people. Yes, treat them with love and never hit them, but garner respect and demand obedience. Far too many dog owners allow their dogs to run the house and then wonder why their dogs bite and are mean to others.
