And I believe in God and completely agree that the Catholic church and all churches in general are only bad news.

On topic: I lol`d.

First vote: 2126 people
Second vote: 2178 people

Apparently the time between votes was so long that 52 new people were born.

2000 years of unremitting Terror against Humanity. The largest terror group is not Al-Qaida, it is the Catholic Church, they have done more to hold back civilization than any other group or combination of groups.
I sincerely hope that the 22nd doesn`t see them pedaling their messages of Hate.

It would cause no harm to perform a cursory examination of previous text in order to prevent duplication.

I see the problem here. How can anyone take a man wearing a red beanie cap and a long skirt serious in a debate.

Can somebody post a link to the debate AGAIN? For some reason I just don`t want to open any of the four links below :)

Stephen Against the Church

That`s Stephen`s turn, his last lines around 6:57
are the best argument you`ll find
ridiculous amount of charity work it does all over the world
You mean like free bibles and missionaries building churches in 3rd world countries? Surely that will help them fight the AIDS that the church imposes on them!

I don`t know the facts here. If someone does, let me know, but I think "christian charity" accounts for a very small portion of the "good" freely done around the world.

@paddy215
If I steal 100 bucks from you and donate 50 of
them to a charity, it`s still a bad thing to do...
Is the same thing here =/ Sorry

And if you watch the debate, Hitchens, at some point,
says that there are good religious people who will
do good things, but that`s because they are good people
who happen to be religious AND (Most importantly), the
church has the "Numbers"... Not just money, but also
hands

If secular groups had the numbers the church has... Well,
we would have a slightly better world

Btw... I think the debate took place in England, if that
changes anything anyway

I actually watched this debate and I can say that even I could have defended the church better than these guys (despite my hatred for it). Hitchens and Fry easily laid the trollhammer on them.

I don`t agree with a lot of what the church says, but the ridiculous amount of charity work it does all over the world clearly makes it a force for good.

Also, Catholics lose in a poll taken in a protestant country ... shocker!!!

The only thing that suprises me is the 268 that are still "For". My guess is that they are die hard Catholics and would vote that way regardless of any arguement made.

Also, it wasn`t as if the Catholics had a weak defence team:

For:

Ann Widdecombe (Member of Parliament, a politician).
John Onaiyekan (a Catholic Archbishop).

Against:

Christopher Hitchens (author and journalist).
Stephen Fry (actor, comedian, writer, etc).

Hardly weighted against the Catholics, with a politician (used to debating you`d think) and a high-ranking member of their Church defending.

"Is this the one where Stephen Fry spoke and owned them?"

It is that very one.

I`d like to point out that this doesn`t mean that it`s a force for bad, just not a force for good, according to those polled.

@Gerry, when was the church asked in this debate how important it thought it was? The debate put the question into context for the general public, and the results are clear.

you have to define "good" before this has any context.

"Good" from the church`s standpoint is to cover up controvcy and restore the church`s wealth.

"Good" to other people might be to strip the church of political power.

I figure if you believe in magic you are gonna get hexed once in a while so deal with it.

They had one for "Isalm is a religion of peace" which most people agreed with going into the debate, but a majority disagreed with at the conclusion. Interesting debate if you have the time to watch it. Debate here
