Sarah Palin`s Old Bumper Sticker Won`t Help [Pic]

Matt, I have a feeling Jared would have just ran into the crowd with his car if he couldn`t get a gun.

If you think the guy wasn`t committed to his crime, watch his videos. The guy was a time bomb, and he just happened to go off. No gun laws would have stopped that.

And Matt,

Banning peanuts from ball parks and steakhouses might stop just one person from a deadly allergic reaction...

Padding all surfaces with rubber might stop one kid from breaking a bone...

Making it harder to get a car might make it easier to stop vehicular homicide, DUI`s, and traffic accidents...

Banning all knives might stop the random crazy Japanese knife attacks on buses...

Making it harder to have a child might stop parental neglect, abuse, and abortions...

An age limit on cell phones might stop upskirt videos, texting will driving accidents, and a budding clique of teenagers sending nudies to each other...

Banning guns might stop the occasional Briton from getting in his Taxi and driving around randomly shooting people...

And my personal favorite: banning banks might stop abuse of credit and spending beyond your means...

Incrementally the lines are drawn until they get to tyranny.

Piper, you are wrong, and I will forgive your broken English as a problem with translation. You have to pass a Federal background check in every state. Any felonies bar you from purchasing, and some misdemeanors as well. There is also a mandatory three day waiting period after you buy any handgun, to stop "crimes of passion". The only exception to this rule is if the purchaser is the holder of a valid concealed weapons permit(who is more than likely carrying a gun when they buy another).

Also, you can only purchase a gun in the state that you reside. Most gun stores will not even allow you to hold a gun to examine if they ID you and see that you are from another state.

State rules do differ about permit, training, and registration requirements; however the above things hold for every state in the country.

Maybe, but it`s harder and that might just be enough to stop someone unstable but not committed to their cause. (Jared I think was both).

Besides, there is a good chance of a Darwinian moment with explosives.

vv If he couldn`t get a gun he`d probably figure out with some research how to make an explosive he was nuts and obviously set on killing people you can make all the laws you want but it`ll still happen.

I agree that painting Jared as anything other than a nutjob is wrong.

Was Jared Loughner`s weapon and ammo purchased over the counter? On the day he shot 6 people dead?

Wouldn`t it have been a lot harder for him to commit this crime if he couldn`t do that?

T-Marley i know how gun are selled in USA. Rules are differents in every state but in most of cases you just need to be 21 years old and a valid ID that`s all. This don`t seem me so complicated. Maybe in your state is different but ,you know, i can allways go in another state where i just need my ID and the game is done.

Gun sales have gone up following the shooting. Particularly in the make and model used in the shooting. Surprising really as the Glock 19 has proved an inefficient murder weapon.

Here we go with Canadian and Europeans acting like they know whats best for everyone again. I love how people are quick to point out that pro-gun and pro-life seem conflicting when they in the same breath are pro-choice and anti-gun which is also a conflicting opinion. The facts are 2/3 of gun crimes in the US are gang related what makes you think gangs will follow any more laws created? Then you say just ban them outright sorry but in the US we don`t like it when our government dictates and takes things away from us besides you`d make millions of people criminals and most likely start a civil war. I don`t care how great other countries think not having a right to own a gun is this country was created and gained it`s independence from the right to. Call me stupid or whatever name pleases you because of where I`m from but I`m not the one behaving like a child. I know enough never to trust a government 100% and it`s part of my name.

Bubba, guns were kept in centralized places because they were hidden in caches. Secondly, you can`t base it off of revolutionary times, as that is pre-constitutional.

Thirdly, I can think of one FF in particular who would have absolutely loved to have a couple of SAW`s.

Finally, you pick out three "scary" guns, but none of them can be bought legally in the configuration that you are talking about without a ton of money. AK`s you buy are semi-auto(without going through the next step). Anything that is Class III (Full auto) requires a 3,000 dollar a year license, and you will be hard pressed to find any transferable fully automatic machine gun for less than 10,000 dollars. Most are 20,000 and above, something tells me criminals aren`t buying those.

Although, at the gun store I worked at I did know an old man with an UZI that was full auto and suppressed, and it was beautiful.

Koug, how about not stereotyping and being a hypocrite yourself? I love all of my bill of rights, especially my guns.

Tyson: Target shooting, skeet shooting, collecting for appreciation in value. No violence in that...

But your logic is flawed, I can think of nonviolent uses for dynamite and c4, like fishing and mining, so by your reasoning I should be able to legally purchase them.

Piper: When you actually know what it takes to buy a weapon in the US, come back and we can talk, it isn`t like buying potatoes in the least. Also, Christians by their very nature and history have a great love for weapons and violence.

Another point, Gun ownership groups love to tout the Constitution but they always, ALWAYS, decline to cite the first and most important portion of the Second Amendment. "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State". Why do you think they put that portion first? Because it was the most important. In revolutionary times there was no armed forces. We had citizen soldiers. The Founders did not mean to limit the ability of the populace to keep firearms, but they did mean that they were to be used for a certain purpose. Even today, most of us who clamor for gun regulation still want people to be able to hunt and protect themselves, but the Founders didn`t know about AK-47`s, the SAW, and Uzi`s. They would be horrified today to see the types of automatic weapons we have and that we allow their sale and use.

The gun homicide rate in the United States is three times that of Europe and Great Britain. Why? Couple of reasons really. No one is allowed to have a gun unless they belong to a gun club and those spots are few and far between. Each application is given a thorough review including psychological examinations of you and your family. Secondly, gun control is in effect and it works. Guns don`t have to outlawed but they do need to be regulated, and those laws have to be enforced. Part of this notion that gun ownership is sacrosanct is the mistaken belief that individuals in the United States have always had guns around. Not true at all. Even during Revolutionary times there was a central depository in each city or town where rifles and hand guns were kept. You could go get one anytime you wanted, of course, but you didn`t keep them in your house. Mostly, only those citizens on the frontier carried weapons every day.

Trust me when I say a good portion of America would revolt and rise up in arms if guns were outlawed. So yes, more shooting than ever before.

Aside from that, we really can`t enforce the guns laws we DO have let alone new ones. This whole thing was just one guy who went batpoo crazy, but politicians will always try to spin it to their advantage. I`ll say it again, I HATE POLITICS.

Well your perception of defense can be arbitrary and in any case you defend yourself against someone that have a weapon cause your law allow him to buy a gun like if it was a pack of potatoes. If you say you are christian and you are pro life you also have to refuse weapons. I really think that gun for defense is just a weak and faible excuse.

Let me entertain this... are you saying it`s going to fail because it`s propped up with US money? Even if it is (it isn`t) then it would be because the US went down as well.

In reality everyone owns everyone else. If you compare output the EU comes out on top. It is the strongest entity. Not country, sure, but that doesn`t really mean anything.
self defense... I have no desire to shoot them at anyone
I`ve been thinking about this one. I guess you can say self defense with a gun is not something you would "desire". Nevertheless, the fact that you have guns indicates that you fear your fellow citizens, otherwise you would not expect to need to defend yourself.

I`m not sure exactly what this flame war is about but I have a feeling that it`s not exactly on topic......

Here`s my two cents on this whole shebang, so read it and forget it as quickly as possible!
The guy that did this was a loony. Bottom line. No matter which "hit list" or book might have motivated him, taking an action as extreme as this takes a truly unbalanced individual. That being said, if we`re going to insist on playing the blame game, the only people that SHOULD take the fall are..... EVERYBODY. All of us. We`re acting like children, picking sides and arguing incessantly. Instead of compromising with each other (a truly radical notion today, although revered when the founders of the U.S. were around) we bicker and fight, and make bodacious claims about what we should do. It`s sad to me that even when a tragedy like this occurs, one it can be argued caused by all of the quarreling back and forth, that instead of learning from it, we simply resume fight

piperfawn... numerically it is but definitely not as a percentage of our GDP, although I`m not going to defend this one. The amount of money we owe and the amount of money we still borrow/print and then spend is really unfathomable. HOWEVER, there are EU members who have much worse economies than the US with much higher unemployment and much higher debt (as a percentage) and that`s why the EU will never succeed long term - they can`t enforce their own rules. Kind of like the UN!

Well I don`t think the government should enforce any kind of abortion stance but I don`t understand how being pro-life and anti-gun control is contradictory. I`m going to guess that the average anti-gun control person believes that americans were given the right to arm and defend themselves ultimately from the government itself. The founders of this country openly believed that citizens should not be afraid of or intimidated by their government, and that the government should be intimidated by its citizens (they work for us after all, though none of them truly understand what that really means anymore).

@Gerry1of1

Hawaiians did not have a word for white man. It is used to describe white foreigners. Haole used in proper Polynesian way. It actually means one who is without breath. In the context of a dead person or in a sense without life spirit. Ha = breath `ole=without

Aloha actually means alo = with spirit life ha = breath When you say Aloha you touch foreheads and inhale the other persons breath. This is proper Polynesian greeting that has been corrupted by the early missionaries. Therefore Aloha is used as hello or goodbye or love, but it`s not really. Hawaiians did not have those words. It was corrupted to appease Europeans.

So when Captain Cook set foot in Kealakekua. He was considered a man without breath. Thus the association of white foreigners with this word.

Confuse you bruddah?

I think when the Constitution was written and everyone was armed, they used to send the stupid ones to Canada. We never should have stopped doing that.

Geez people! What`s all this fuss about who is to blame for the shooting?

It seems obvious, to me, that the guy who pulled the trigger is to blame.

i also understand that people who are pro-gun control mean well, but if you really think that gun control laws have any effect on crime rates or violent crime then it`s out of sheer ignorance...

i read a hilarious progressive blog this morning about how the REAL problem here is that it was legal to carry a concealed weapon and THAT`S why this woman got shot.... FORGET THAT MURDER IS ILLEGAL AND THAT DIDN`T STOP IT... jesus christ, when will people realize the people that buy guns intending to murder someone with them DONT CARE ABOUT GUN CONTROL LAWS IF THEY DONT CARE ABOUT MURDERING LAWS!!!!
