"Police first used pepper spray to subdue the suspect, who at one point got out of his chair and walked around, Gascón said. While trying to control the suspect, one of the plainclothes officers who initially responded to the call was stabbed, police said. It was several minutes later before more police arrived at the scene.

Yeah, an unstable guy stabs a policeman so its OK to shoot him at POINT BLANK...

"In the video, one of the officers shoots the suspect using a beanbag gun, and the suspect appears to throw the knife aside. A split second later the suspect is shot in the groin with a handgun."

Sure, i kinda understand the reaction and all, still not cool.

The shot to the groin may have been excessive, but I sympathize with the cops. The guy is clearly nuts to bring a knife to a gunfight with a half-dozen cops. Although, it is in SF so the guy may lose his badge (the one with the handgun, not the beanbag gun).

I don`t know the whole story, but the guy in the video said "shot him with a shotgun"... may have just been one of those pepper slugs or whatever that stuns/incapacitates and not kills.

@steve17... so he should be free to harm himself or others, cause accidents or stab someone?

    Quote from USAToday:
"San Francisco`s police chief is renewing his call for Tasers after officers shot an agitated man in a wheelchair who allegedly stabbed one cop in the shoulder and slashed tires on city cars, the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting. The confrontation, which involved four officers yesterday morning, was captured by a phone camera.

Both the suspect and officer suffered wounds that are not life-threatening, police said. The suspect, who was armed with a knife and a chunk of concrete, was shot in the groin while seated in his chair, though he had left it earlier and walked around."

If that dude stabbed an officer, he needs to be put in his place, I`m sorry. We can`t just have knife-wielding maniacs stabbing the law-enforcement, now can we? Plus, he didn`t suffer any severe injuries. Stop blowing it out of proportion.

Eh this isn`t as bad as what happened at my college. A grad student lost it and had a nervous breakdown in his apartment, police were called because he was screaming, and then they broke into the guy`s house and shot him in the face with an assault rifle after they claimed he charged at them wielding a pipe. Somehow he lived but he was in the hospital for a long time. Oh, and did I mention he had polio as a child so he had to walk with a cane and walked extremely slow at that?

Even if the man stabbed or even killed somebody else, he threw the knife
away, aren`t cops trained enough to realize that they could take him down
with their own hands already and not using a gun?

You people are defending the cops because this guy stabbed one of them, and
I agree, except that he was unarmed already when they shotted him again

So ....f they had shot some fully functional crackhead it would be ok, but not a guy in a wheelchair?

What kind of bullpoo logic is that? A knife is dangerous no matter who wields it. As someone that spent two years in a wheelchair, believe me when I say that a guy like this could easily mess up a few cops before they took him down.

Let`s not even mention the facts that the knife could be thrown, or that the guy might not even be crippled and could lunge out of the chair (probably not the case here, but would YOUtake that chance if you were the cops?

Full Story, as initially posted by TopperHey.

Guy wasn`t "wheelchair-bound" he got up and walked around at one point. Not only that, but he`s mentally unstable and has a record of going there and causing problems.

That said... A tazer probably would have done the job sufficiently, without blowing the dude`s balls off in the process...

Also, for everyone whining about how they should have used tasers, maybe you should spend three seconds on google to discover that the SFPD aren`t allowed to carry them. Kind of hard to use equipment on someone when your own government won`t allow you to have it.

Also tazers are known to kill. They don`t do it all the time, but every once in a while...dead.

So, the rule of thumb for police officers in the San Francisco area is this: if some dude is brandishing a knife, draw your hand gun. If the dude is brandishing the knife and is at least twenty feet away, you shoot him.

Not all gunshot wounds are life threatening. At least not in any real sense of the term. that is like saying any minor bump is life threatening because you could throw a clot into your lung.
I took a 9mm round to the left leg about 12 years ago from a 9m beretta from extreme range. I`m not saying it tickled, but it was about as life threatening as some of the skateboarding fails you see here daily.

Then the SFPD is a POORLY equipped police force. Did they have rubber bullets? Doesn`t look like it. So they just chose to end his life. As a matter a fact a taser is the weapon of choice for the Dallas Police Department when dealing with a knife wielding maniac wheelchair or not.

If it were to no be removed you would eventually die from causes such as blood loss and/or anaerobic bacteria poisoning. Therefore eventual death. Thus life threatening.

Doesn`t look like it. So they just chose to end his life.
    His injuries were NOT LIFE-THREATENING.

Excessive? Maybe. Murder? No. A good use of a bullet to prevent captain psycho from potentially breeding through some method? I think so.

If it were to no be removed you would eventually die from causes such as blood loss and/or anaerobic bacteria poisoning.
Actually, initially, leaving the bullet in helps to stop blood loss. Taking the bullet OUT generally causes more blood loss than just leaving it in.

Also, as for "Anaerobic bacteria poisoning"... I could get a f*cking SPLINTER in my finger and end up with complications like that. As long as it`s well-treated at an adequately equipped medical facility, the only problems would be pure bad luck.

I still think it`s a bean bag gun,
but if it`s not "we allow this to happen. when are we going to stop it? "

This is what you get when you don`t pay attention to your civil liberties slipping away...and it gets worse from here.

    @Cajun
how many times do i need to say this?
THEY DO NOT HAVE THAT EQUIPMENT! THEY ARE PETITIONING TO GET IT AND THIS IS ACTUALLY BEING USED AS EVIDENCE OF THEIR NECESSITY!
and a taser hit anywhere CAN kill somebody, NON-LETHAL shots DON`T.

Do you people actually expect the police to follow this mentally deranged man wielding a knife around town offering him flowers until he decides to stop stabbing people?

Not saying the cops were in the right. SF chronicle quotes a PD rep. saying that officers saw the knife being thrown at them instead of being discarded, then they fired. Bad situational awareness gets people needlessly shot.
That said, depending on the distance of someone with a knife from you, they can harm you before you have a chance to un-holster your weapon aim and fire. This is why police are supposed to maintain 20 ft in these circumstances, which these officers did not, and have weapons drawn. They probably all realized how close they were at once and freaked out, bam, horrifying events ensue.
If it were me as a civilian in the same situation, and I`d fired, I`d probably lose a lot of sleep over it, but I`d be pissed if anyone said I should be punished for defending myself. The guy had the intent and means to hurt people, and plenty of people have faked physical illnesses before.

They should have just shot his tires out.....

But joking aside.... if those were nonlethal rounds then there is no news here. Wield a knife like a crazy guy then you`ve got it coming... wheelchair or not.

The most disturbing thing about this whole clip was the foul language from the potty-mouth recording the video.

C`mon, San Francisco Chronicle, clean up your act!

"wow, so basically cops just shot anything and anyone now huh...we allow this to happen. when are we going to stop it?"

Wave a knife around, get shot. Isn`t that the expected course of events?

Why does it matter if he`s in a wheelchair?

For one thing, a disibility shouldn`t and doesn`t get you special treatment. That`s what equality is folks; you get treated just the same as everyone else (or special treatment that allows you to effectively get treated like everyone else; wheelchair ramps, etc).

Also, how do the cops know he`s actually incapable of walking? I`m fully functional and capable of walking. Nothing is stopping me from sitting in a wheelchair and faking it. Making the assumption that wheelchair = harmless could be dangerous.

    @SmilinSam

"fully armed/capable officers cannot disarm a handicapped man without shooting him?"

How can you be certain he is handicapped?

Anyone can sit in a wheelchair.

It wouldn`t be smart for the police to just assume. They deal with people who lie and cheat and con all the time; their default attitude should be to doubt and question everything.

ESPECIALLY when a weapon is involved.

He stabbed a cop in the shoulder. They first used pepper spray, then a beanbag round. When the suspect threw the knife in the direction of the officers seem to have taken that as an attack. If he had other weapons, they didn`t know, he could have easily had more stowed in his chair and on his person.
Still, someone should have used a Taser before this point.

I`m for equal rights. Wheelchair or no wheelchair the questions are "Was he a threat? Did he surrender peacefully? Were the police in danger?". If you answer Yes, No, Yes, to those questions then he deseved to be shot. If you answered Yes, Yes, Yes, you weren`t paying attension. Yes, No, No = huh? No, No, No was a bad Techno song from the 90s.

So running around, threatening people with a knife is now some sort of civil liberty?

SF cops don`t carry Tasers, but they didn`t need to shoot him - they could have easily disarmed him with a nightstick. I think what happened was that one cop hit him with the beanbag, and the other one (hearing that shot) just shot him out of reflex.

Cops have carried guns for years, yet people STILL complain about getting shot. DERP if you aren`t breaking any laws, those guns will not be used on you, so you have nothing to worry about.

    tl;dr - Stop breaking laws.

My dad`s carried a Xacto blade around with him everywhere cause he uses it at work. Yes it`s dangerous. But depending on what the was in trouble for in the first place, he may have been just showing them his concealed weapon so he didn`t get into more trouble. ..It`s possible.

Just because you`re in a wheelchair doesn`t mean you can`t kill someone with a knife. It also doesn`t mean you`re allowed to go around swinging your knife at cops.
