Why does other people not having food therefore mean I`m not allowed to eat the food I enjoy? If they don`t have food, me deciding to eat healthy isn`t exactly going to help them.

@Volsunga
I read the article you posted, and while its rhetoric and semantics are fairly articulate, it is an essay. Essays are widely opinionated and have no factual proof, as noted by the lack of endnotes.
As far as cholesterol goes, it`s good to have cholesterol. In fact, without it, you die. The details are that you need a certain ratio of different cholesterols, mostly LDL(low-density lipids) to HDL(high-" "), and the LDL must be of a certain make, mainly large and fluffy, so they don`t get jammed into the crevices of your arteries and start a plaque build-up.
As for Big Pharma, I don`t believe it`s a conspiracy; but if you want to trust them, go right ahead. :)

I try to eat as healthy as possible, but in college this is nearly impossible. I just eat whatever looks good in the dining hall...

How does having more than five ingredients make it NOT a food? Curry has at least a hundred assorted spices.

trying to eat right would be great if food weren`t so fist-f*cking expensive. and what difference does trying to eat right make anyway? we`re destined to die, so eat up and be happy.

My doctor gave me some pretty good advice on this some years back: keep to the perimeter of the store. Funny, but true.

@KitFox You sounded pretty coherent until you said the words "Big Pharma." You probably have no interest in hearing this, but adding conspiracy theories to the mix does NOT help your cause.

Paleo Diet is BS
We don`t actually know enough about prehistoric humans and their rates of longevity to make such claims. Skeletons can`t give you very much information as to the general health of the average human. Wolf is lying and selling his diet with no real scientific data behind it. You can romanticize cavemen all you like, but the honest truth is that they most died at a young age, mostly because they wore away their teeth by chewing tubers and bones to ward off starvation. They also ate large quantities of pure animal fat, which is very high in cholesterol.
There is no conspiracy in the food industry. "What they don`t want you to know" is a classic selling line for bullsh*t. What you never hear is "why they don`t want you to know", which is never a real reason. You`ve bought into a scam, either t

I am not out to condemn anyone for the way they eat. We all have our own paths to follow, right? But for those who are interested, check out www.robbwolf.com or read The Paleo Solution or The Paleo Diet. These are ethnobiologists, archeologists,biochemists, and athletic trainers who are finding out that our bodies weren`t cut out for the foods that arrived during the Agricultural Revolution 10k years ago: Grains, legumes, dairy, and most sugars (except occasionally honey or starchy tubers). Our bodies are adapted to hunter-gatherer foods, like meat, seafood, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and some mealy seeds. Our ancestors may not have lived as long as us due to infection or accidents, but they were healthier throughout their lives, and their remains prove it. It`s fascinating research that Big Pharma and the USDA don`t want you to know.

...actually it is mostly medicine and the lack of things to kill us >>;

I`m pretty sure modern medicine is probably THE reason we`re all living longer.

You know what I say to that?

I say there`s a reason we live longer, healthier lives now than the cave-men did. And it`s not all medicine and lack of things to kill us.

@Volsunga amen! It drives me crazy when people go on about genetically modified foods. They do realize all the organic foods they eat are still genetically modified right? right?! No? *sigh*

Guess what, all those chemicals they put in the food not only are harmless (We have an FDA for a reason), they kill things like bacteria and allow the food to be edible longer. All this crap about "organic" and "natural" foods/medications got its start from the bad bad pseudoscience of the New Age movement and conspiracy theorists. It will pass along the same direction as the atkins diet when people realize that it`s not a speed ticket to skinny. People just have to realize that they need to consume all the necessary nutrients without acquiring more calories than they can work off in an average day.
What pisses me off more, though is when people complain about genetically modified foods, which by definition cannot cause any more harm than the regular food.

Milk is not meant to be ingested by ANY adult mammal. It is for babies, that is why mothers start producing it, and THEN stop producing when the offspring ages.
And we are certainly not baby cows. Cow milk is specifically formulated for calves. If anything we should be drinking human milk. But we don`t. That`s gross.

Dry cereal = lame.

tvremote:
"Lactose is perfectly digestible by adults so long as you have been drinking it with relative consistency your whole life."

While I agree with your statement about genetics, not racism, this isn`t quite correct either. I adore dairy products, and would easily go through half a gallon of milk in a week until 2 years ago, when it started causing me pain. Lactose intolerance hits when it wants to, whether or not you have been regularly drinking milk.

Thank god for lactase pills tho!

Lactose is perfectly digestible by adults so long as you have been drinking it with relative consistency your whole life. Lactase is present in everyone at birth and will gradually disappear if you never drink milk. Also, its genetically more common for white people to be able to drink milk. That`s genetics, not racism, before anyone makes that retarded claim.

Milk is the most common allergy among humans. Most adult mammals can`t digest lactose.

TKD, that`s stupid. Pasteurization is the way that they get rid of bacteria. It doesn`t do poo to the milk itself, except make it warmer for a while.

So if dairy products are so bad for us, should people just take calcium supplements instead of drinking milk?

That`s lame, now I can`t eat cereal properly! :(

So just because something has more than 5 ingredients its somehow bad for you?

Silly organic people, combining foods that compliment each other is a great thing.

"Dairy products are not food. Our bodies have not evolved to digest it well, hence the reason for so many allergies. Even if you don`t have noticable allergies, you are still hurting your digestive tract"

Only if you eat processed and pasteurized milk. Raw, organic milk is nothing but good for you if drunken safely. (by safely I mean it`s tested for bad bacteria and whatnot.)

All the joking aside, for someone who does not fully understand the needs of the human body from a nutritional perspective, this is a good chart to use at the grocery store. At least it weeds out the twinkies and cookies from the bell peppers and chicken. I won`t get into the dairy debate as explaining why dairy is ok for some and not for others is far too complex to explain here. In short: if your body rejects it, don`t consume it.

Dairy products are not food. Our bodies have not evolved to digest it well, hence the reason for so many allergies. Even if you don`t have noticable allergies, you are still hurting your digestive tract, opening you up for a host of autoimmune disorders. Cute, but if you want good, well-researched, and natural advice, CHECK OUT THE PALEO WAY OF EATING. It`s done wonders for me and others, and it`s more than just a diet. I know this sounds salesy, but I am a skeptic-turned-supporter.
