I don`t mind her message but I stopped watching after I heard a lot about "me, my, I" in a really dramatic tone. It`s about MLK. Maybe she added that at the end? Oh wait, watched the end...not a bad message...too whispyish voiced for me to endure though.

She should turn away from the mike to breathe like Tay Zonday, but somehow I feel that she revels in the dramatic way her breath sounds over the PA. Look at me, I`m making a statement and putting it on youtube so I become a gay icon. The press will eat it up. Just what every liberal non-nice individual does. I`m saving the whales, I`m saving the earth, bring home the troops, shut down chicken farms in favor of free range. Why don`t one of you figure out how to solve the national debt instead of trying to get your five minutes of fame by championing some politically correct horsecrap. I know, I know, my i-a-b icon is accurate. You`re still all PC pussies.

Wonderful. I hope her parents are proud of her.

For those saying she should keep it to herself, she chose to come out publicly like this in order to send a message to other gay teens. It wasn`t about her. It wasn`t about the attention. It was about showing others that they`re not alone, and it`s okay to be who they are.

YugureKage "oh, sarcasm... clever. The theme for her school was blah, blah blah, inspired by MLK. So blah, blah blah. He had the courage to stand up for blah, blah blah, so she has the courage to blah, blah blah, prejudice, blah, blah, blah, gay and lesbians!

The rest of what you said was just more scrambled bitch-brain nonsense.

Hey wait a minute...did you write this chicks speech?

That was one of the bravest things I`ve seen in a long time. Yeah, she probably did practice and rehearse her speech, all public speakers do.

Gays do not have the same rights as everyone else. I`m sorry folks but that is a fact, not an opinion. I applaud her bravery, her honesty, her fortitude. I sincerely hope that one day she can marry her true love, officially in the eyes of the law. I hope that she will live to see a time when she will not be denied access to her dying partner in the hospital because she is not "legally" family. I hope that she will be able to receive her partners pension after they pass, or be covered for medical costs under her partner`s health insurance as her spouse. I wish for these things because right now in many states she would not be able to. This is equality?

"At least she made it all about her and not the great man that the day was set aside for." oh, sarcasm... clever. The theme for her school was breaking the silence, inspired by MLK. So that is what she did. He had the courage to stand up for the rights of African Americans, so she has the courage to stand up for LGBT people. I see her speech as a way to honor MLK`s memory and his message. "I have a dream" pertains to everyone who has ever felt oppressed by society, including racism, sexism, and every other kind of discrimination and prejudice.

The thing I never liked about Wiccans is how pretentious they are with their beliefs. As an ex-Odenist who still hangs out with a lot of pagans of differing beliefs, I feel qualified enough to make that judgment. Hell, even Satanists are more humble sometimes.

Which is very relevant to the issue at hand here. Gays should fight for their rights and I`ll support them in doing so. The problem lies in when they make a big deal about themselves being gay and become a stereotype, like the video above. Then they can go f*ck themselves because there are plenty of normal people whose only difference from you or me is that they are attracted to those of the same sex and are not self-righteous pricks.
These drama queens do the same amount for civil rights as Flava Flav opening a KFC knockoff that also serves watermelons and grape soda.

She was so annoying. Trying SO hard to be sincere and meaningful that it made it less sincere and less meaningful. I hate over-rehearsed speeches and hand movements and eyebrow twitches and slowing down the voice and walking up and down and all of that, seems like there`s way too much ego involved.

Oh I think I finally get that whole sarcasm thing now! What you really meant was that you want your dog to hump me, and you want to be right next to us? Is this some ritual to attain the third degree? You are so sweet! I love how friendly, intelligent, and tolerant you have been during this whole exchange, your profile fits you perfectly! (See you may think that is sarcasm, but really I mean it. The hypocrisy permeates throughout your very being!)

The last time I`ll ask before I just concede that you won`t answer.

Why is it ok for you to stereotype southerners as ignorant racist hillbillies, but it is wrong to stereo type femlibs as bra burning non-shaved woolly mammoths? Or gays as flamboyantly dressed interior designers? Or black people eating chicken & waffles? Or white people dancing poorly?

Are you the judge, that we should run all stereotypes by you for approval, Queen?

Poor Zira as I said I often delete and repost when I feel the need to edit. Take it up with Fancy, and get him to add an edit button. I understand Wicca more than you may believe. During my life I have tried or studied almost every major religion out there from Satanism to Chaos to Zoroastrianism to Islam, with the exceptions of Mormonism and Scientology.

Luckily I wasn`t attempting to be a grammar nazi, only to bring the mirror up to your self-righteousness.

Regardless of any of that, you have persistently dodged the original subject of my post, the fact that your stereotyping of southerners is just as discriminatory as the discrimination you claim to abhor. Where is your witty "sarcastic" defense of that hypocrisy?

Don`t worry, I`d still take you out to dinner, and we`d have a great time, ritual sex and all! Much love my dear, much love.

Oh thank you so much Zira. I did miss an apostrophe in "rat`s ass". I also could have possibly written "may look or sound like me" as "look or sound like me may", but I believe the content of the message was easily understood to all but the most backwards of overall-wearing hillbillies.

Way to dodge the illustration of your own ignorance and hypocrisy by pointing out a flaw in the structure, instead of any flaws you may or may not have found in the message itself.

Oh right, and you of course accused me of snorting coke, which makes a lot of sense. As a self proclaimed wiccan fem lib, I guess you were too busy performing the Great Rite and burning bras to realize baseless accusations and stereotypes come from everywhere?

For future reference sweetheart, it is unwise to call out someone`s spelling or grammar on the internet unless you have carefully read and analyzed your own posts, such as your first one.

Zira, how can you talk about willful ignorance in the same post where you categorize all white southerners as racist hillbillies who speak with an illegible southern drawl? Oh yeah, in the 60`s right. No white people in the south in the 60`s (or before) believed in equality? Idiot. All gay people have aids too, right? [/sarc]

I will never apologize for someone else being gay, black, Muslim, Hindu, or Latino because I don`t give a rats ass. Nor will I apologize for the way other people who may look or sound like me treat them. I will apologize only when my own actions have cause for an apology. Why should I apologize for a lack of understanding in how a guy can find a guy sexually attractive, or the thought of two dudes banging being gross? That`s what makes me hetero. My brother thinks a guy and a girl banging is gross, that`s why he`s gay. Good for him. Ask for equality fine, but an apology? My ass.

Gays do have the same rights as everyone else. They can get married just like anyone else, as long as it`s to a member of the opposite sex. You want a legally recognized relationship with a same sex partner? Fine, that`s what civil unions, powers of attorney and other existing contracts are for. But I`m not asking you to shut up, I`m just asking you to whine in private.

New production of the Vagina Monologue? A drama student doing what drama students do best, creating drama. This wasn`t hard for her, or "making her freak out". This was obviously written and practiced. She`s up there acting self righteous like she is giving the Emancipation Proclamation, or the cure for cancer. Bleacgh.

On a softer note, guy who`s recording needs to keep the mic away from his heavy breathing.

Even though she seemed really passionate about getting that out of her system and was probably freaking out over doing it, I can see how her peers might have thought of her as being really condescending. I think in this day and age there`s a lot more acceptance of homosexuality than there was even five or ten years ago, and kids don`t like to be talked down to at that age, especially when it`s from a peer.
Also, I remember assembly being a time when you thought, "Yay! I don`t have to be in class!" That def. burst the assembly bubble for a lot of kids that day.

Male 96
The value of the speech is that people not actually knowing any other gay people makes them more likely to act like dicks to gay folks or be really freaked out about being gay themselves. This girl, while I`m sure on some level she wants the attention, is willing to risk receiving the wrong kind of attention to open an important dialogue. And it`s not just about comfort. Hate crimes happen against gays or perceived gays proportionally more than any other minority group in the US, by a long-shot. I`m not saying that other groups aren`t also discriminated against or subjected to horrible acts of violence, and that that isn`t a problem, but I am saying that putting a public face on the gay community, one that isn`t some abstract TV friendly caricature is a preemptive defense, not just emo BS. That said, I did get annoyed that this speech happened at an MLK assembly. It`s not right to co-opt one of the only days nationally devoted to the CRM, even if your cause is a good one.
