I can`t even begin to imagine how any human being is able to pray or meditate so peacefully whilst burning alive.

i suggest you get your facts straight, canada had no hand in the vietnam conflict, except in a political capacity.
unless you count taking in american draft dodgers.

He was demonstrating the violence. Indo-china (Vietnam) was a french colony before WW2. After the Vietnamese kicked out the Japanese they wanted their country back. France whined to the UN, sent in the Canadians (got asses kicked) UN whined to the US, please kill these people, they want to be free. US sacrifices 50,000 troops to kill 1,000,000 patriots.

For those who don`t know what this was about, the monk in question (Thích Quảng Đức) was protesting the persecution of Buddhists (who made up the majority of Vietnam at the time) by the South Vietnamese Diem regime. He wasn`t protesting the war as such. That he could sit there & not move a muscle or make a sound while he burned to death is not only horrifying & astounding but testiment to his strong beliefs. This photo (well...the original one) was widely credited with prompting JFK to remove American support for the Diem regime. It`s just a shame someone had to die in such a spectacular way to get their point across.

"or this guy actually took the time to spread oil in an unnatural, but seemingly entirely meaningless pattern BEFORE setting himself on fire."

He poured like 5 gallons of gas on himself and set it alight. I`m sure it would have been very random.

Q: would you do this for your beliefs?

A: yea, I`d burn a monk for my beliefs

All joking aside its a really powerful photo I think the color takes away from that.

I don`t remember the original image (I know I`ve seen it), but with the color added, the fire spread looks nearly impossible. Which means either it was an absolutely horrific coloring job and someone needs to go learn basic coloring (inside the lines anyone?), or this guy actually took the time to spread oil in an unnatural, but seemingly entirely meaningless pattern BEFORE setting himself on fire.

hmmm mcgovern and theend (both 81, weird eh?)

my point was that because of the suicide bombers in recent years, and the totally justified hatred they recieve (because its stupid, and wrong), it`s easy to forget that dying for your beliefs can be inspiring and powerful.

these days dying for your beliefs is seen as an extremist and militant act. but this guy advocated the opposite of militant behaviour. so much so that he was able to summon the strength and courage to do what we see in the photo.

I am not defending suicide bombers. sorry for confusion. and also, cool re-do of the photo je pense.

It looks pretty realistic to me, for some reason it helps appreciate it more when it`s in color.

Well, The colour does not look real ( well it isn`t real), but it certainly makes the photo worse. And for those saying `fake` and `shopped`- I really hope you are very young.

@greggpethers

Besides not hurting anyone else the difference is a suicide bomber if done correctly would kill them instantly not slowly burn to death so ya suicide bombing still is spineless.

the bad press suicide bombers get these days (totally deserved of course) really takes away from the power of an act such as this.

imagine caring about something this much, that you would burn yourself alive! it;s an incredibly powerful idea, and something that i honestly cant identify with... im just not comitted enough to anything. humbling stuff.

It`s pretty incredible, protesting a war by setting yourself on fire and just sitting there letting yourself die. Nothing gets the message across quite like that.
