i`m 31 6`1" about 250lb, and live in europes most unhealthy country, scotland. i`ve not watched this clip or the documentary, but from what i`ve read in the comments this guy is trying a helluva lot harder than i am to be healthier, and for that kudos to him. i`m not going to get into what i think about psycological reasons etc.. as there`s not enough characters, suffice to say that i think they`re used to cover up a humans shortcomings, rather than them having to make the effort to solve their problems. depression isn`t a reason to eat, it`s the cause. and now i`ve lost my train of thought, toodles

Yeah well wait until you turn 31. See what your metabolism does then. That belly is going to get huge at that rate of eating.
--------------

This is so true; my uncle was skinny as a rail until he got to be about 25, then he blew up like a balloon. He was a really attractive man, too, but now he`s just your average, overweight middle-aged man.

But to Musuko: Well, then his case is excusable, and I kinda do feel sorry for him. But for the people out there who are just ginormous blobs of flesh for no good reason other than they just don`t give a crap about themselves, yeah I don`t have sympathy for them.

"He should have tried to get help before he got to this point."

He states that he did, but was told to exercise and diet, and wasn`t given help to address the root psychological issue behind his eating.

To the argument between Musuko and Stelly:

It`s one thing to be overweight, even obese. It`s another to be at the point where you are unable to fit into normal, every-day things, such as seat-belts, or unable to DO every-day things, such as walk down the street. Now that I know this man`s situation (the guy in the video) I really don`t know if I should feel sorry for him or not. He should have tried to get help before he got to this point.

But my point is: even if Stelly is considered obese, depending on his height/build, he probably can still walk, drive a car, sit in a booth at a restaurant, go on rides at amusement parks, etc. He can still function. Once you get the inability to FUNCTION, then I`m sorry: that`s pathetic, and that`s probably what Stelly meant when he called the guy in the video pathetic.

So they tell him they are going to cut his helper money and his best move is to sling a glass across the room. Who`s gonna clean that up?
I have a hard time feeling sorry for him. I have seen the documentary and when he got too fat to waddle to the kitchen he ordered "take away" (carry out) several times a day. He did this to himself.

Your metabolism may be great now, but be careful; it can and likely will change with age.

Most guys older than the both of us (18-29) will tell you that the weight will pile on in a way it never did when you were younger.

"This guys biggest worry is how to score a double whopper."

If you would watch the full documentary, you would learn that his diet was already down to 1,500 calories per day before filming started, that all his meals were prepared by the carers, and the destructive eating habits that got him that way were now over; he was in the process of fixing himself, and he`s succeeding.

"I thought everyone was saying the BMI is wrong"

I get the impression that there are two types of people who disagree with BMI results; those who are in denial about what the results tell them about themselves, and those who are statistical outliers, such as bodybuilders.

For most of us, BMI is a pretty good measure.

"oh well 5`6" explains it that and British food is an appetite suppressant."

Do you only eat American food? British food is pretty bland for the most part, but then so is American food. Thankfully, neither of us are restricted to just eating our national dishes, are we?

Umm, no. I think you`ll find that you are lying, because that is not "merely" what you were saying. What you ACTUALLY said was this:

"IT TAKES A LOT OF WORK TO GET THIS FAT!!!!...pathetic"

Why are you trying to pretend that you didn`t say "pathetic"?

If you`re going to call someone fatter than you "pathetic", then why shouldn`t I call you, someone who is fatter than me "pathetic"?

I mean, christ, 300lbs? You weight more than TWO of me!

"Eeeesshhhh quick here eat this twiggy..."

I`m 144lbs and 5`6", giving me a BMI of 23.2, happily inside the "normal" band. If anything, I need to lose a little, not gain; my usual pre-Christmas gorging weight is 140lbs.

Funny how an American would consider normal body weight to be "twiggy". ;)

Same, but closer to 185 pounds here. I have an awesome metabolism, but I put it through its paces. I probably do... looks like >3000 calories a day.

In my late teens I put away more calories than I do now, and I was 5`8", 115 pounds.

Now, if you had the opposite metabolism to mine.... I can see turning into that pretty easily. It doesn`t just mean work, it means work + metabolism.

I cannot physically become that even if I tried. I used to live on a diet of Pizza Hut Pizzas and I`d put away 2 larges a day on my own. 115 pounds.

Metabolism matters.

I`m 144lbs. If you get to call people fatter than you "pathetic", then I guess that means I have the right to call YOU pathetic.

If you`re over 6`1" tall, that weight makes you obese. If you`re under 6`1", then that weight makes you clinically obese.

So don`t act all high and mighty, fatty.

Good for you if you could cope, at age 20ish, with your father dying and your mother becoming disabled and requiring your constant care.

But not everyone is an emotionless ubermensch like yourself. Some people go off the rails and need help back onto them.

Bottom line; this man has suffered from an addiction no different from addiction to alcohol, heroin, smoking, etc.

All of these addictions involve a choice, whether we will give in to the compulsion...but the compulsion itself cannot be controlled; it`s deeper in the psyche.

And in this man`s case, he lost control and gave in to the compulsion due to tragedies when he was in his 20s.

Many of us would fare no better.

Also note; he survived his operation, he lost a MASSIVE amount of weight over the following months. By the end of the documentary he was mobile in a motorised chair, the risk to his health was diminished, and he was working towards being able to stand and walk again.

And the amount of support he needed from carers and the taxpayer was also massively reduced, easily making the cost of the operation a net saving for the country.

Male 2,850
And please, let`s stop talking about "glandular" issue.

His problem was not "glandular". It was a mental problem; which is not to belittle it. His problem was just as serious and uncontrolable as depression, or bipolar disorder, or drug addiction.

When he was a young man, he suffered a series of emotional blows (as are described in the documentary), including his father`s death. He turned to food for comfort, just as others turn to alcohol. As his weight grew, his unhappiness increased, which led to greater eating. Until the eventual result of this.

Please also note, that at the time of filming, he had already reduced his calorie intake to 1,500 a day. He was no-longer eating the massive amounts of before.

Male 2,850
Watch the whole documentary and your opinions rapidly change. His support was cut after he recieved the surgery he needed to shed the weight (you can`t just "exercise it off" when you can`t even stand).

This surgery was paid for by the taxpayer, to the tune of £12,000 aprox. However, by doing so, it led to him becoming much more self-sufficient, and DRASTICALLY reduced the £100,000 a year bill for his care.

Also note that the surgery risked his life; he could have died on the operating table. This shows that he was serious about getting normal again. And no, he wasn`t forced into the surgery; he actually had to fight to find a surgeon who was willing to do it, as the risks involved were high due to his weight.

Ummm... wow. Well, at least this one wasn`t from the US. (Yea! We got off scott free on this one!) See? The whole world is getting fat because it`s so much cheaper to buy some fast food than it is to go to the grocery store and buy vegetables and cook your own meal. Let`s face it - we`re all bargain hunters. That`s one thing we shouldn`t skimp on, though. I`m proud to say I was 265 in high school and now weigh about 180 (I`m 6`2", so it`s a nice weight). I over ate. That`s all there was to it, so I`m not too compasionate for people like this that obviously look like they don`t care that they are taking money from the government just for being fat. Yes, I know I`m going to get flamed for this, but hey, I was there (granted not that big), but I PUT DOWN THE FORK. It helped a lot!

NHS budgets are being slashed and choices have to be made over paying for treatment with a decreased budget. Cutting this mans handout will
a) Still give him more money than the average claimant.
b) Give him more than enough money to live comfortably on
c) Help him to lose weight
d) Free up much needed cash to treat other illnesses
And what is really annoying me is that this guy signs up for a TV show and complains that he wont be able to stuff his face as much as he used to.

See there? Who says that this man (or any other extreme case of morbid obesity) hasn`t fallen victim to this disorder? He should get treatment so he can feel better about himself. He probably hates that he`s let himself get to the point that he is, and now they`re making it even worse for him.

You have to love yourself before you can help yourself. He obviously is plain miserable about himself. He needs help. Laughing at someone like that is the equivalent to laughing at someone who is suicidal, in my opinion.

When people explain their obesity with a glandular or genetic disorder, I see it no differently than if they have a food allergy or diabetes.

Under each condition, the individual is aware they have a disorder that can cause serious health complications if they don`t practice self-discipline about their eating habits.

If someone has a gluten allergy, it doesn`t matter how much they crave pasta and bread, they shouldn`t eat it.

If someone has diabetes, it doesn`t matter how tempting the candy isle is, they should avoid it.

If someone has an glandular/genetic disorder, why shouldn`t they be held just as accountable for their own eating habits?

penguinazul, one does exist. Binge eating disorder.
Diagnostic Criteria for Binge Eating Disorder; DSM-5

A. Recurrent episodes of binge eating. An episode of binge eating is characterized by both of the following:

eating, in a discrete period of time (for example, within any 2-hour period), an amount of food that is definitely larger than most people would eat in a similar period of time under similar circumstances
a sense of lack of control over eating during the episode (for example, a feeling that one cannot stop eating or control what or how much one is eating)
B. The binge-eating episodes are associated with three (or more) of the following:

eating much more rapidly than normal
eating until feeling uncomfortably full
eating large amounts of food when not feeling physically hungry
eating alone because of feeling embarrassed by how much one is eating
feeling disgusted with oneself, depressed, or very guilty afterwards

Bullpoo. Maybe some people are more genetically disposed to obesity, but NOT THIS FAT. Your parents may have not taught you proper eating habits, but you make the decision as an ADULT to continue them.

Anyone this size is fat because of their own damn negligence. Period.

Furthermore, why is it sad that his "suffering" is being displayed the masses? The masses want to know about the consequences to gluttony. It motivates them to have self-control. This non-nice individual signed up to be on the show because he LOVES PLAYING THE VICTIM.

But my two cents:

If anorexia can be considered an eating disorder, which in a way is a mental disorder, then why can`t we have eating disorders on the opposite end of the spectrum? I think making fun of people who are like this guy is just as bad as making fun of someone who is anorexic. Help him solve his problem, don`t just sit, watch, and laugh while he gets worse and worse and eats himself to death. Gosh, humanity sickens me.

"The example you just used, if anything, proves that he has a problem, considering he couldn`t keep the weight off. "
Have you seen any womens magazine in the last 10 years or any `mens health` magazine, or any celebrity tv show? They are all about people wanting to lose weight, then putting it back on, does this prove they all have a mental disorder?

"I wouldn`t buy heroin for an addict or ciggarettes for a chain smopker" - What, even if they had a mental disorder making them want to smoke or drink or perhaps a chemical addiction?

"but I sure as hell wouldn`t laugh at their pain and suffering" Is anyone laughing on this site? Seems more anger and pity than laughter

"And also, do you propose just...not feeding him?"
No, just a healthy diet of around 1000 to 1500 calories a day

I`ll be the first to say i`m no expert in mental disorders. But why the hell would someone eat themselves to being that fat, just because they can? The example you just used, if anything, proves that he has a problem, considering he couldn`t keep the weight off.

But that`s not really the point i`m trying to make. Of course I wouldn`t buy heroin for an addict or ciggarettes for a chain smopker, but I sure as hell wouldn`t laugh at their pain and suffering. And also, do you propose just...not feeding him? That`s hardly a viable option.

The point i`m trying to make is that we shouldn`t be poking fun at this guy, just because we can. And especially not from behind a computer screen.

This guy already lost 20 stone in 2006 and was quoted as saying ""You`ve got to change your mindset when you`ve got a food addiction. You can`t have treats." TREATS, that`s right TREATS. Poor, poor man not allowed his treats, sounds like a terrible mental disorder to me.

There’s a great big difference between having an opinion and pouring hate into a comment board. There’s something slightly disgusting about the lack of sympathy some people posting here have.

This guy is sick. He has a mental disorder. ( “Paul has battled a compulsive eating disorder most of his adult life.” http://tinyurl.com/yztjrce .) Would you laugh at someone with cancer? Someone in a wheelchair? Someone who was blind? I sure as hell hope not.

This guy is a sick man, who has just had his quality of life drastically reduced. I don’t see what’s so funny about that, do you?

apparently this guy receives over 1,100 a week in care packages because he is morbidly obese. You have to work very hard to reach 700lbs, to some degree it was his choice. The fact that they decided to cut his benefits is something like firemen deciding that gasoline isn`t what you put fires out with after the building has already burned.

@student_law.

I think it`s insulting to call being fat a mental disorder, and I don`t care how offensive that is to say. If I told a man in India who is riddled with leprosy, or a kids who suffer from crippling ailments that mean they can`t get out of bed no matter what they want or need to do, that this man is suffering just as badly because he consumes 20000 CALORIES per day, I`d be f*cking ashamed. so F*CK everyone who claims it`s a decease. Just stop drating eating.

Agreed. In spite of all the BS excuses, even if someone happened to leave an entire buffet in front of you everyday (not likely) you are still reaching out your pudgy fingers and picking up the food and stuffing it in your own fat gut, day after day after DAY.

@bophus and theend: your attitude proves my point :-) I`m in a pretty ok shape, eat fruit, vegetables fish etc. i stay away from sugar and work out 3 times pr. week.

I also realize the obvious fact that no matter what is the cause of their condition, they are miserable. I mean, this dude is more or less screwed. I understand that it can be comic in some settings - but making/watching hours on of their misery on TV... i mean come on? And making fun of them is one thing, but you dudes are clearly really angry with this miserable man.. which, to me, seems really really wierd. Whats the deal with the anger towards overweight people? How low down on the social ranks are you in your respective countries, that you need to dive into other peoples misery and dwell over it for hours infront of the TV..

"Becoming disabled because of overweight is a serious mental disorder. You may be genetically disposed for it, and it may have begun as a result of negligence in your childhood- either way this man is sick and it is sick to make entertainment of it. "

You can not be genetically predisposed to be 700 lbs. You ate yourself fat. Being genetically overweight, maybe, but not 700 lbs. YOU make yourslef that way. So this guy is living off the system, because he cant keep his mouth shut? His daily caloric intake is more than mine for a week.

You dont have a thyroid disorder, youre fat. Youre not big boned, dinosaurs are big boned, you are fat. It isnt your mothers problem, it isnt your up bringing. It is you. YOU ARE FAT

TV producors that make a living out of feeding on the populations perverted notion on beauty, and watching other people fail so that they can feel better about them selves not looking like a model, should`ve been arrested a long time ago. Ever since Ricki Lake started making social pornography, and as Jerry Springer carried on and made it worse, the "reality-shows" of the last decades has degraded humanity, and the loosers and self-pitied population of the US and western Europe aged from 12 sit every night and mentally masturbate their way out of reality and into other peoples failure-like a 35 year old divorced man who has spent the last two years playing WoW.

These programs are the lowest form of TV,and you becom

I`m sure there is a medical problem behind his weight. I know people get fat, but there has to be something causing him to get to 700 lbs. I might be wrong though. Still sad, it is never nice to see people killing themselves this way.

That sucks. I don`t know what his condition is, or how he got that fat. I`m one to hope that it wasn`t his fault, but some genetic disorder or something similar. Regardless, it must suck to be him.
