Very powerful. Excellent message. My wife recently broke the driver`s side-view mirror off her car while driving with my 2 girls on board. They were arguing, she wasn`t texting, and noone was hurt but they all could have been and I certainly gave her hell for it. I told her, and everyone needs to learn this, "When you`re driving a car the most important thing you`re doing is driving the car and you can`t let anything get in the way of that!" Actually I think I was shouting at the time. I`ve seen people on phones, shaving, & doing eye makeup at the wheel. If one of these is you remember that everyone around you is at risk because of it. If you`re driving, drive the car. If you`re not going to drive the car put it in park. I`m a doctor. Stay safe.

only problem is the innocents the person might take with them

At least with drunks, you figure they`re driving way late at night, not so many folks on the road, they`ll kill themselves, but not so with texting

Yeah it`s sad and all, but at least there are a few less dangerous drivers on the road that would endanger other people`s lives.

Texting requires far more concentration on the phone and away from the road. It also takes a lot longer than lighting a cigarette.

It is horrible tempting to respond to the "chime", but I have (knock on wood) ignored the chime each and every time, and never regretted it. There has yet to be something important texted to me. If it`s important, they call. I answer hands free, but I usually make it clear I`m driving and (thankfully) the callers make it quick then hang up.

Better yet, I try to bury the phone in my jacket so I can`t hear it at all when driving.

Accidents are horrible, but that`s all they are, is accidents. she could have looked away for any other reason and the result would have been the same.
I am a smoker i have look away for i dunno 3, 4 seconds or more to light a cigarette. i just do it at a time i deem safe.
Also not to be rude in anyway. the birthday thing was a little....odd

yeah whenever i text someone and they say they`re driving i stop texting them completely and won`t respond if they keep texting me. i bitch at my friends all the time when i`m in the car with them and they`re texting, and if they start going out of the lines or anything at all even begins to happen i yell.

Uhhh... This is why I don`t look at my phone when I am driving... Especially when I have two boys in the back seat who don`t care if my wife is texting me, or if my friend wants to know what is happening tonight..

It really is pathetic to see people so enslaved to their phones. Every time I see some asshat pull out their cell phone every minute or so to type something inane I just want to knock it out of their hands and slap them in the face. Especially when I`m talking to them.

Ignore the phone while driving. Just ignore it completely. Turn up the radio or MP3s. This is why answering machines, voice mail were made, and why texts and emails don`t disappear until you delete them. There is NO emergency unless you`re a doctor, fireman, or policeman, perhaps.

/won`t ever "integrate" a phone into a vehicle again.
//damn near killed myself on a motorcycle trying to think about something other than the motorcycle riding. That stopped that day.

Also- cyclists: Just because you`re not behind the wheel of a car doesn`t make it OK to talk on your phone. I`m a cyclist myself and nothing pisses me off more while on the road than seeing other cyclists riding like morons.

Multi-tasking is an art :

Perhaps there should be built special `text while driving` roads whereupon all of the people who text while driving are free to drive and text. This would serve to ensure that `text while driving` drivers only endanger other `text while driving` drivers, while also creating work (and therefore an economic boost) building new roads (or additions to existing roads), and increase the demand for the emergency personnel and services that will likely be required to care for these `multi-taskers` when they mash up. Next up- `driving while intoxicated` roads.

I can`t even imagine the pain a parent must feel in the loss of a child. The part where the mom is singing "Happy Birthday" for her dead daughter made my heart sink and almost cry.

Any kind of mobile phone use whilst driving is just daft. drivers should keep their attention on the road, not on phones, passengers, make-up, or any other silly activity.

One of my friends, when I`m in the car, will hand me his phone so I can type and read texts for him instead of him getting distracted. If he`s in the car alone, he just shuts his phone off.

Sure, there`s been those awkward "Uhh, dude... Girlfriend, and she wants to talk dirty..." moments, but he`s never had an accident that I know of.

Also, TKD, you`d be better off driving under the influence of a small amount of alcohol than texting. There isn`t much worse you can do while driving than perform a task that requires use of your eyes and hands.

My mum was killed by a lorry driver that was on his mobile and didn`t break fast enough.
he walked away fine.
kinda goes against the natural selection idea really.
in short don`t do it, if its important, pull over

"Only texting at red lights or straightaways with light traffic around (like highways, for example)"

Real smart- because traffic never stops suddenly on the highway. There was footage in this video of a guy rearending the car in front of him doing just that. Stop lights are fine- but if your car is moving, the road needs your undivided attention.

One of the root problems here is that driving is seen as a right by many drivers in the US- despite the fact that it is most definitely a privilege- and for a good reason. A car is an extremely dangerous piece of machinery in the hands of someone who is not operating it safely- yet people are rarely mindful of that danger when they get behind the wheel on a daily basis.

I remember watching motorists on the highway from the window of my schoolbus when I was a kid (in the days before cellphones were common), and I`d see people putting on makeup, flossing, eating breakfast, reading the paper. It`s totally insane to think that this is acceptable. I`m glad that using a phone and driving is rapidly on its way to being tantamount to driving drunk in many states. If you can`t drive safely, don`t fcuking drive.

I text while driving all the time. But I do it as safely as possible. Only texting at red lights or straightaways with light traffic around (like highways, for example). I know, it`s not the smartest thing to do while driving, but I could certainly be doing worse things while driving. On a side note, I never get behind the wheel if i`ve had the smallest sip of alcohol even :-)

daily activity in Albuquerque, people on phones and texting while driving. They weave all over and are oblivious to all around them. I get lotsa one fingered waves when I get next to one on my bike and keep revving the engine.

Don`t be a dumbass and put the phone in your lap while texting, hold the phone near the top of the steering wheel with the brightness down so it doesn`t block out everything behind it, especially at night.
