I`ve never understood why you Americans feel the need to have a gigantic fence on your border anyway, are you really that paranoid? Can`t think of many other countries with one... how about just putting in some effective immigration control as opposed to a giant f*** off fence and armed gunmen?

When the border fence is designed like it is in this video, it aint going to stop much of anyone. There are better designs out there, this one here is crap.

You know, some things are simply best left "untold" to the general public. I`m certain that the law enforcement have been always aware of this and proven it many times over. Now, everyone knows should this go viral on every possible daily website. Well, just think where our next batch of tax dollars will need to go.
    Good job girlies!

"Can`t think of many other countries with one..."

I love it when Europeans judge our border, when theirs is probably the size of the border between Alabama and Mississippi, and they have armed checkpoints at every road crossing. Look at Russia. Huge freaking border. Huge freaking fence on it. If it is too large to police, you HAVE to fence it at minimum.

The US border is nothing more than a statement of `look at us, we`re so serious about immigration we built this huge f***ing expensive fence that cost billions of dollars because we can`. It`s not necessary, and as proven here, it`s not even effective. Also, you can`t compare the rest of Europe with Russia, Russia is Russia.

@lukas1051, yes we do need one unfortunately. This is just a small deterent. The bulk of illegal drugs; copied medicines (fake/non-FDA approved manufacturers); immigrants that can`t use proper channels due to criminal backgrounds; major (oh yeah) gang problems come from illegal immigration across the southern border. Again, this is not against Mexicans as they`re our treasured neighbours but the misfits and thugs of society. Please don`t think that it`s all just Mexican illegals using the border, they`re from all parts of the world that come for this purpose.

Walls have always been the best border control method. In England in Roman times we had Hadrian`s wall, built to keep the Picts (basically Scottish people) out.
I think the shear presence of a wall will dissuade many from crossing. And, cynically, the physical effort of climbing the wall will keep the weak and infirm out. And the ones that make it will be strong enough to work for illegally low wages. =P

@Baelzar.... Pretty sure you`ve misunderstood that the cost of the fence is much much more than the cost of illegal immigration.
Your stated cost of the fence: $7,876 million
Your stated cost of illegal immigration: $100 million.

I don`t know if any of these numbers quoted are accurate without sourcing but your QED needs some work.

Should just make 2 simple changes,

    1. Allow in all immigrants

    2. Have an annual test of intelligence. Bottom 5% or so are culled.

It`ll make America a LOT better.... trust me.

"$100,000,000 is an awfully large perfect number and I`m calling BS."

If the negative amount is $1 then it is enough reason to keep them out. People should pay their own way, and illegals, by and large, do not.

Im sure your numbers are not accurate to represent an argument anywhere, but lets assume they are right on the money for just a second.
What kind of math are you using?Im assuming you work in economics or government, because only in those worlds is the number 100,000,000 larger than 7,876,000,000...in fact by your numbers we would have to wait 79 years before the investment would pay off, and that does not include enough manpower, ground vehicles and helicopters/drones to patrol it effectively. If the government, who which by the way works for a conglomeration of corporations wanted an end to illegal immigration, it would be put to a stop. Illegal immigration is the closest thing the U.S. has to slave labor, if you make big business give up that, CEO`s will no longer be able to afford gold plated shark bars by their pools.

If we`re simply going to use math to decide if we should have an open border with Mexico, then:

1969 miles (border of mexico) x
$4,000,000 per mile of fence =
    $7,876,000,000.

Cost of illegal immigration each year =
    $100,000,000,000 (billion) plus. Per year.

So let`s say we built a high-tech fence, with enough manpower, ground vehicles and helicopters/drones to patrol it effectively.

It still would be much less than the yearly cost of illegal immigration. So secure the border already.

    Left off some zeroes, sorry.

    My source is here:

The Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration on United States Taxpayers

Again, this is strictly using math as a reason; since that`s what this idiotic video uses.

Math-wise, we could secure the border for much less than the cost of illegal immigration to this country (especially to states/cities along the border).

"Shows the kind of company America`s keeping with this idea."

Our fence is to keep people out. Theirs was to keep people in. That means you fail at similarity.

"good job with that fence republicans!"

The fence has been under construction for about 50 years. I`m sure there has been one or two times during that period that we have had Democrat leadership.

Look dude if we want to keep these aliens out of our country we`ve got to do two things:

    1)Overhaul our controlled substance policy
    2)Go after the jobs

1)Scientific studies have shown that many substances labeled as schedule 1 or 2 are in fact less dangerous than alcohol and tobacco. If we could buy said substances within our own country than there is less incentive for smuggling.

2)What Obama is doing right now is what OldOllie suggested in a previous post: fine the employers. Here`s where I break from him: I propose a flat fine for each illegal caught plus a rate based on how much he/she was paid or how long he/she was employed.

This fence has proven to be nothing more than grand waste of money.

I`m with fatninja and jokerslaugh. Electrify the fence, and it`ll be like a big bug zapper. :)

Aside from that, a wall isn`t very effective unless you have enough guards to watch over it. Republicans continue to distract us from the real issues by bringing up "anchor babies" (for which legal precedent exists for deporting mom, dad, and kiddies anyway) and the like. We should go after companies that hire illegals, but that may be tricky. Should we lump Wal-Mart and Target in with sweatshops that would knowingly exploit illegal immigrants, forcing both to pay the same fines? At, say, $20,000 per illegal, that could shut down smaller companies that hire illegal personnel, but places like Wal-Mart laugh at such small change, as well as have scores of lawyers to appeal those decisions.

I think the wall is more of a visual representation that can go undisputed as to exactly what side of the border you are indeed on. It`s not about preventing border jumps it is about being able to roll right down the border and clearly identify the exact point you have left either side. This allows border patrol to pick up anyone they think has entered in illegally and deport without having to fight the ones claiming they had no idea they entered out border. They can simply say you saw the fence and hopped it now your going back.

That`s another thing. On the other hand I do think we need to make our bipolar minds on the issue:

Thought 1)We don`t want them here because they steal American jobs.

Thought 2)We want them here because we can pay them substantially less than Americans.

The funny thing is if we do get rid of them the who`s going to, tile our roofs, mow our lawns, clean our homes, paint our surfaces, build our highways, raise our kids?

Okay, madest, so you don`t trust FAIR`s estimation of 13 million illegals. How about DHS? They estimated 10.75 million in 2009. Bear-Stearns estimated 20 million in 2005. INS estimated over 7 million in 2000. Even using that low estimate, it still makes financial sense to secure the border.

I have a feeling the numbers mean nothing to you.

We can`t fix Mexico. And if we continue to provide the jobs and money train that illegal immigration allows, Mexicans won`t fix Mexico. It is so corrupt, you`d need to invent new words to describe it.

I reject your non-solution solution. It is entirely possible and economically viable to secure the border. THEN we can enact better work visa programs. Not before.

madest: Perhaps you forgot or are unaware that the last time amnesty was tried it was a miserable failure. Most illegals didn`t even apply, The estimate was that only 7% of them did. Illegals are here to work yes, but they don`t want to pay taxes like the rest of us.

That`s the main problem, their children get a free education, they get free emergency health care, and other free social services and never have to contribute to pay for them. On top of that, they wire much of the money they earn back to relatives in Mexico.

"The funny thing is if we do get rid of them the who`s going to, tile our roofs, mow our lawns, clean our homes, paint our surfaces, build our highways, raise our kids?"

Americans who want to work. Our (reported) unemployment is at 10% man. If you take into account people who no longer collect unemployment, or teenagers without jobs, it`s more like 25%. I`m sure some of them would do the job.

madest, why do you think citizens won`t do the work that illegals currently perform?

Further, how can it be right in your worldview to have this group of slave-wage laborers to perform these jobs? How can you possibly reconcile that?

I work in a state prison. Top that fence with a few coils of razor wire and it will more that 18 seconds to get over it. What a joke.

This fence is just another form of evolution, if we`re going to have illegal aliens I want them to be able to jump a fence and be able to run...

If for no other reason, then I will find it funny when Mexico fails in the Olympics because everyone who can run, swim, climb, or jump is over here already.

climbing up and touching the top is easy next time ladies if your going to try and make a valid point try hauling yourself over and reaching the ground safley without hurting yourself, evading border patrols reaching a town finding work all undetected then i might be impressed by your point honestly if this is the best argument that you can come up with for uncontrolled immigration (a propem that doesn`t just affect the usa)no wonder the the extreme right is doing so well in elections all over the world and to me that is the most worrying thing about uncontrolled immigration

Wait, the fence looks like THAT? Made up of poles with gaps? That`s ridiculously easy to climb! A little preparation and anyone could do it. All you would need would be some sort of sling like these guys use:

A half-decent leather belt would do. And boom, Land Of The Free.

"Look at Russia. Huge freaking border. Huge freaking fence on it. If it is too large to police, you HAVE to fence it at minimum."

Funny, because this is a picture of the signs near the Russian border with Finland. As you can read, the border is guarded by nothing more than painted tree trunks in places. And here is another picture, taken just 200m from the border. I see no fence the length of the Mississippi. Do you?

@Madest so what we should let people break our countries laws to get "cheap" food? HA - I`ll tell you what that "cheap" food starts looking a lot more expensive when you factor in the cost of bilingual education, immigration services, and healthcare clinics which us legal citizens have to pay for. In my opinion the people who are here should be legalized, given fair wages, and be made to pay taxes without any special privilages. THEN BUILD THE ELECTRIC FENCE!!! We don`t need to end up like China with to many people, overcrowded transportation systems, too much trash, too much polution, and too many mouths to feed.

Unfortunately ours does ironically keep people trapped in a socialist 5h17hole,

In Canada, we have a very efficient border protection against Mexicans. It`s called America.

Now we need to find a new one to protect us against Filipenos. The pacific isn`t working as well as it did before they got their hands on real boats.

cajun....if you don`t want highways and hospitals and a police force you can go f*ck your cousin "WAY DOWN IN TEXAS!"

but i USE my socialist highway and enjoy my socialist healthcare and occasionally the government-supplied police force catches a murderer or two....and that`s not so bad either...

@Madest I`m xenophobic because I don`t want our population to go up beyond the point where its unmanagable? Because I`d like SOME forrest left for my future kids next to the landfills and giant coroprate farms? Or I`m xenophobic because I think that people should respect the laws? Please explain it to me.

You`re just a finger pointer with no real point so you call people names. It`s so much easier to call me xenophobic than to prove that overpopulation (with huge segments of that population not paying taxes) won`t be a problem for the US!

two words: National Guard. No fence, just John "Middle America" Smith out there with his .50 Cal daring Jose and Julia Garcia to try this poo on his watch. Will never happen ... conservatives need their dumb Mexican asses for slave labor and the Dems want what they think are 15 millions instant Dem voters.
