I`ve heard it`s just a PDF document where they turn off the printability of the document. PDFs can already do this when created. Why make up a new format? Why not just make your plug-in output to a PDF that can`t be printed. Stupid.

Why are people so damn stupid? Paper companies (in the US)plant a tree for every one they cut down, because they are a company and want to make money. Sometimes they even plant MORE than they cut down! Paper is a biodegradable renewable resource. It costs more in resources to recycle paper than to just let it decompose. Stop it with this bullcrap, and stop believing everything you hear/see.

Already cracked. It`s basically a renamed pdf. It was a stupid idea anyway. If people need to print something, they`ll find a way, if they want to save environment - they won`t print anything, format doesn`t matter for them. I, for one, don`t print anything. But only because I`m out of ink.

I think it`s a great idea. Why not? I don`t care what you call it, .wwf or .dum. It serves a real purpose, makes it easier to send a lot of info, and does help the planet. It doesn`t matter who created it. It`s not like they`re making buttloads of money from it like Bill Gates would if he thought if it.

Why are people so damn stupid? Paper companies (in the US)plant a tree for every one they cut down, because they are a company and want to make money. Sometimes they even plant MORE than they cut down!

OK. But it takes years, if not decades, for the new tree to grow enough to equal what was cut. During that time animals are without a habitat. Or, erosion could destroy the land and prevent them from growing at all.

If you really believe that deforestation isn`t a serious threat to the planet, you have your head firmly planted up your ass.

Gotta love the self-righteous indignation about the environment. Consider this
    1. A growing tree draws more carbon out of the air than a fully grown tree. Therefor a field of young trees is better for the environment than a lush rainforest.
    2. A cucumber in the grocery store does not mean that a `wild cucumber` was plucked from the Amazon jungle by a giant bulldozer that crushed a baby cancer-curing monkey. It was grown on a farm. Guess what... so was your paper tree.

Why would any rational person want to add software that limits their capabilities? When they started complaining about books being a waste, that`s some serious Fahrenheit 451 sh*t going on there. If this ever becomes mainstream enough to be a nuisance, the open-source community will just develop a decryption protocol that will convert it back into a useful format.

You hit the nail on the head. The vast percentage of trees being cut down for paper (at least in NA) have been grown on FARMS specifically for paper. This means that those trees were planted for the purpose of harvesting for paper and otherwise would have not existed in the first place.

And like most people here say, this .wwf file format is stupid. What happens when you NEED to print a hard document and can`t? Go through the trouble of cracking the file to make it printable? Ugh. Paper copies of things do still have use!

freddyferret: I agree, and not only that, but most of the forests being exploited are rain forests (which create almost half of our oxygen, and have the greatest biodiversity in the world) and old growth trees which are hundreds of years old. Deforestation IS a huge problem.

Your premise is false. Rainforests do not make half our oxygen. Actually, they barely contribute to the oxygen production on Earth. About 90% of tree-based oxygen production is done by the arctic taigas of Canada and Siberia. About 80% of all oxygen production is done by algae. Rainforests produce more greenhouse gasses (in the form of carbon and methane) than they convert. If we were strictly concerned with controlling our air concentration, then the destruction of the rainforests would be the first step in that endeavor. Luckily, that`s not our chief concern.

Not a bad idea, but there`s a REASON to print pages. We still have old-fashioned filing and mailing systems. Good luck applying for anything related to government or insurance without any physical paperwork. Granted, there`s major changes already, like I filed my taxes online. Then I applied for financial assistance from a hospital and I had to print up copies...and fax them. Heck, my workplace doesn`t even have a single computer in the building.

I dunno, if it gave me something else, anything else that added valuer to it, I could see the point. Maybe a software solution to screen glare so that it`s more comfortable to read on a laptop, so I don`t need to print it out?

What these idiots, and almost all green idiots, forget is that there are blocks of forest sectioned off for the sole purpose of being cut down. No animals, no wild vegetation, and once they cut down the trees, they plant new ones and go off to another sectioned off forest that has no animals, no wild vegetation. Rinse and repeat.

Do you really think the logging industry would I am a pretty pretty little girl itself up by not replanting trees, thus ending all profit?

F*cking hippies keep forgetting to mention fully grown mature trees don`t absorb the massive quantities of Carbon that we are led to believe. Trees only absorb large quantities of carbon during their fast growth stages. Ergo... we should be cutting down more established mature woodland and allowing new trees to grow in it`s place if you want to use the tree argument in a climate change debate.

@andynaylor My fiance is getting his PhD in plant physiology and he says you`re wrong, lol. Older trees have more leaves = more metabolism, and even though older trees aren`t growing vertically, they grow laterally and so the uptake of C02 is steady throughout it`s life. Plus, larger, slower growing trees store more C02 over their lifetimes than small, faster growing trees used for paper.

A few years ago the company I worked for as a chemist decided to change the labs from the old fashioned paper lab notebooks to an electronic notebook to decrease the amount of paper the company used overall.
    SSSOOOOOOOO
Instead of passing one notebook around to ten different people to look at and reference, all ten would print out their own copy. And since you could reprint it anytime you wanted, your old copy got thrown out when you were done only to be reprinted again when you needed it again.

What about all the natural resources that are used to keep the computer you`re reading turned on your wwf on. what about the eye damage etc done from looking at a screen constantly. I`m a law student I have to read a lot of cases, you can read on-line and go blind. I go library and look them up in journals or print them out half the time. we`re just not designed to be able to read from a screen for prolonged periods of time.

I`m sure it`s much more ecologically friendly to buy every single worker a computer so that they can have access to stuff like employee handbooks, manufacturing drawings, HR documents, MSDSs, etc.

Some things have to be printed. All things that do not have to be printed... simply don`t print them!!!

But I think it`s a good idea. And actually I think it is rather logical, that people shouldn`t print everything out.

Here`s an idea. How about the timber industry plant saplings after they clear cut forests? Wood is a renewable resource. Quit your bitchin` and go plant a drating tree, you lazy non-nice individuals.Problem solved.

Um, I hope they know that trees are FARMED for paper. For every paper tree cut down, three are grown. They don`t cut down rainforests for paper. They cut rainforests down to make farmland for livestock.

The WWF is much like PETA. They mean well, but dont do any real research.

Trees are farmed, much like cattle. After they are cut down for paper, they are replaced by at least one sapling. This makes sure that future generations of loggers are able to cut from the same forest and actually makes it easier for them. If we stopped cutting down and replacing these forests, the land would be sold off to developers, who would cut the trees down, not replace them and build whatever they want.

There are more trees in america than there were 200 years ago. Mainly because 200 years ago, there were more old growth forests. But the numbers are higher today for trees.
This idea is retarded at best, since it would do more harm than good.

Yeah, who needs books anyways? Totally useless, amirite? Let`s just end all those campaigns to teach poor kids to read. Then they wouldn`t kill trees for paper!

Seriously, though, I know they`re probably arguing for everyone to use something like a Kindle. I own a Kindle and love my Kindle, but I will not deny that there are some reasons real books can be better, and I completely intend to continue buying some physical books, too.

@Seastone That`s a good way of putting it.

The fact that you have to download new software to get a new format that pretty much just has one less feature than you already have is just completely inconvenient.

The easy solution is just don`t print everything. It`ll save you on ink costs, too.

As for books, they`re just better when they`re on paper. There`s something about it that`s just easier to read for most people, myself included.

So here`s an idea: Let`s just petition them to stop killing trees to print anything in the "Teen Paranormal Romance" genre. I saw the section at Barnes & Noble the other day. I`d estimate it was pretty much an entire rainforest.

If you`re going to create a file format that can`t be printed, for the love of God, PLEASE don`t base it off PDF. PDF files are horrible for on-screen reading. The ideal electronic file format is plain HTML.

Although I agree with the notion, the solution is stupid: Sure it works, but no sane employer/CEO would agree to do that, simply for the reason that it slows down your working process. A better solution: Make electronic paper readers better and more affordable. This will save millions of trees.
