and why is having a washing machine in the kitchen odd? Most people I know have it there, sometimes right along side the dryer!

why is a washing machine in the kitchen strange? that`s where they go, right?

also, why is a person covered entirely in baby bottle teats not worth a raised eyebrow?

yeah i think i have only been in one house in which the laundry facilities were staged in the kitchen. now if you think of your kitchen as being separate from your dining area, then it is not so strange... maybe this is a European tendency.

From the people not confused about the washing machine I can assume that having one in the kitchen is a European thing. I live in an apartment and there`s a washing machine and dryer in a small utility closet.
My last apartment had the washing machine and dryer in the basement.
I`ve never heard of them being in the kitchen but it seems to be enforcing some gender roles (don`t flame me !)

In Europe it is very common to have the washing machine in the kitchen. Further, it is common to be an "All-in-One" washer and dryer in one compact under the counter unit.

Originally, in older homes (pre 1920`s) it was done this way because water would only be run to one room (kitchen) when indoor plumbing was introduced to the structure, and therefore it was convenient to put it there - in later construction where homes were built with plumbing, it became cheaper so you didn`t have to run pipes all over the building.

While front loading washing machines are the "hot trend" in the US, they have been commonplace in Europe since the 1960`s for this reason (you are hard pressed to find a top loader).

It`s also common to find the kitchen of a house right next to (or close) to the Water Closet (WC/ Bathroom) - again, less plumbing to run.

I had no idea that having a washing machine in your kitchen wasn`t a worldwide thing. It`s like eating toast buttered side up or having Slade on the radio every christmas... they`re little things that happen where you live, and for some reason you assume they happen everywhere else too.
