One of the spring-thingie`s he`s wearing malfunctioned and instead of going over, he was hit by the car.

He`s facing life in a bed now, possibly paralized below the neck.

And to top it off, his Dad was driving the car.

Even as warped as I am, I don`t see much humor in this

so on this show people bet what a stuntman can do. (or so I`ve been told) So the point of the show is basically set up to prove the stuntman wrong, so why are they shocked when the stuntman fails?

Why are all of you (in the comments here) saying that it`s not funny? No one claimed it was funny. It is a culturally significant moment, the worst accident in the history of these types of stunt shows. It`s not supposed to be funny, it is, however, definitely relevant.

@Angelmassb: no, he is awake again. They put him in a coma for two days.

@Ninabear3: the Bieber was scheduled for that show (also Robbie Williams, Take That, Cameron Diaz, Cher, Phil Collins, Christoph Waltz and others) but the show was cancelled right after the accident, none of them appeared on stage.

@gerry1o1: no, the "spring-thingie`s" didnt malfunction. It was just a difficult stunt. He fell 2x during the rehearsals but wanted to continue.

@Alienxpress: its not a show for stuntmen. Its been on german tv since 1981. Everyone can take part, you just need a good bet. It could be anything, but often they are quite spectecular.

@Axejst: you are right, gottschalk suxx. :-)

I must sound like a horrible person for thinking this and believe me when I say that I would never wish this on anyone; but I just cannot bring myself to express any pity greater than "He shouldn`t have tried to jump over a moving car in the first place".

It`s not like he was a pedestrian; struck unawares by an out of control vehicle. He knew the risks and he decided to go ahead and do it anyway. I hope that he does make some sort of miracle recovery and that, if he does, he stops trying to kill himself for television.

@trusty - I think he was trying to jump over it and land on his feet. This is a fairly common `stunt` which isn`t supposed to be all that dangerous...

@CrackrJak - Yeah, I mentioned that in a sad way. It`s terrible that "the masses" have become so jaded to pain, suffering and death (I blame Hollywood!) that TV needs this kind of thing just to make money, eh? Some things just don`t change, even if they should!
@inaria - read the comments, I think he`s far from "ok" eh? But yeah, I DO hope he gets better!

Actually @GHudston, I think the same way. If you take a chance and fail, well, that`s what you get! If you put your money on #7 and lose, too bad. If you say "I can jump over a speeding car" and fail, it could be fatal!
Thus I personally do not attempt anything I see in a "fail" video! Call me crazy (and many have!) but risking one`s life for money seems pointless to me...

What the hell are you talking about? People were walking on the wings of planes, and throwing themselves off Niagra Falls in barrels long before TV. You`re in your 40`s, don`t you remember watching Evil Kenevil? Mankind has always tried to push their limits, it`s what keeps us from becoming extinct (not jumping cars...i`m talking about a broader sense). The Romans watched the gladiators, the Spanish watched bullfighters. A desire for excitement and danger is nothing new or obscene. There is nothing inhuman about wanting to vicariously jump a car or walk a tight rope.

by the way for non german speaking lads - the AUDI was driven by his father.

damn, that must be some bad feeling of guilt.

doctors reported that he has a low chance of not being paralyzed after this accident. radio stations here in austria are broadcasting this regularly.

Poor guy. I mean obviously he knew what he was getting himself into and knew the risks, but it`s still a terrible shame, that`s possibly the worst outcome that could have resulted.

5Cats - if anything, I would say the current generation is LESS jaded to pain and suffering. Certainly in the western world, we are far less used to it. As you say, things like gladiatorial fights to the death, public executions through hanging or beheading or burning at the stake were all far more gory than anything we experience in daily life now.

CrakrJak, the increased audience is just the effect of globalization. People came from all over the country to see Houdini nearly kill himself for entertainment. What`s the difference? It`s completely acceptable to condemn the behavior, but saying that it`s a degredation in society is entirely off base. If anything I believe US society is becoming more cautious. We have air-bags everywhere, helmets on everyone, parents never let their kids leave their side...
