CrakrJak, you weren`t commenting on peoples pension for endangering themselves. You were talking about people craving WATCHING someone in danger. And Houdini went to great extent to make his illusions appear dangerous.

number43: After reading several `Magic` books on Houdini`s stunts, When I was a kid, He was in little danger most of the time. Even modern magicians Like Blaine and Angel won`t perform a stunt if there is even a 1% chance of them dieing.

CrakrJak, the increased audience is just the effect of globalization. People came from all over the country to see Houdini nearly kill himself for entertainment. What`s the difference? It`s completely acceptable to condemn the behavior, but saying that it`s a degredation in society is entirely off base. If anything I believe US society is becoming more cautious. We have air-bags everywhere, helmets on everyone, parents never let their kids leave their side...

almightybob1: I fear that we are reverting back to those things like gladiatorial fights. Sure men have performed stunts of bravery, Likely since the beginning, But now it`s done with nationwide and international audiences.

Poor guy. I mean obviously he knew what he was getting himself into and knew the risks, but it`s still a terrible shame, that`s possibly the worst outcome that could have resulted.

5Cats - if anything, I would say the current generation is LESS jaded to pain and suffering. Certainly in the western world, we are far less used to it. As you say, things like gladiatorial fights to the death, public executions through hanging or beheading or burning at the stake were all far more gory than anything we experience in daily life now.

by the way for non german speaking lads - the AUDI was driven by his father.

damn, that must be some bad feeling of guilt.

doctors reported that he has a low chance of not being paralyzed after this accident. radio stations here in austria are broadcasting this regularly.

5Cats,
"@CrackrJak - Yeah, I mentioned that in a sad way. It`s terrible that "the masses" have become so jaded to pain, suffering and death (I blame Hollywood!) that TV needs this kind of thing just to make money, eh? Some things just don`t change, even if they should! "

What the hell are you talking about? People were walking on the wings of planes, and throwing themselves off Niagra Falls in barrels long before TV. You`re in your 40`s, don`t you remember watching Evil Kenevil? Mankind has always tried to push their limits, it`s what keeps us from becoming extinct (not jumping cars...i`m talking about a broader sense). The Romans watched the gladiators, the Spanish watched bullfighters. A desire for excitement and danger is nothing new or obscene. There is nothing inhuman about wanting to vicariously jump a car or walk a tight rope.

Actually @GHudston, I think the same way. If you take a chance and fail, well, that`s what you get! If you put your money on #7 and lose, too bad. If you say "I can jump over a speeding car" and fail, it could be fatal!
Thus I personally do not attempt anything I see in a "fail" video! Call me crazy (and many have!) but risking one`s life for money seems pointless to me...

@trusty - I think he was trying to jump over it and land on his feet. This is a fairly common `stunt` which isn`t supposed to be all that dangerous...

@inaria - read the comments, I think he`s far from "ok" eh? But yeah, I DO hope he gets better!

I must sound like a horrible person for thinking this and believe me when I say that I would never wish this on anyone; but I just cannot bring myself to express any pity greater than "He shouldn`t have tried to jump over a moving car in the first place".

It`s not like he was a pedestrian; struck unawares by an out of control vehicle. He knew the risks and he decided to go ahead and do it anyway. I hope that he does make some sort of miracle recovery and that, if he does, he stops trying to kill himself for television.

5Cats: "Blood and circuses, entertaining the masses since ancient Rome"

Just what I was thinking, I didn`t submit this to be grim, It was submitted to illustrate just how far overboard TV shows have now gone to get ratings.

On a side note, I invite people to pray for him.

@ Altaru

I thought the same thing, till I noticed one of the cards was a `C` and there was someone who flashed an `E` card on the left. They were spelling out someone`s name.

What was supposed to be on the signs those people were holding on to at the end? `Cause if they were supposed to be ratings the stunt, then I think giving the guy a zero is kinda like kicking him in the balls after that...

@Angelmassb: no, he is awake again. They put him in a coma for two days.

@Ninabear3: the Bieber was scheduled for that show (also Robbie Williams, Take That, Cameron Diaz, Cher, Phil Collins, Christoph Waltz and others) but the show was cancelled right after the accident, none of them appeared on stage.

@gerry1o1: no, the "spring-thingie`s" didnt malfunction. It was just a difficult stunt. He fell 2x during the rehearsals but wanted to continue.

@Alienxpress: its not a show for stuntmen. Its been on german tv since 1981. Everyone can take part, you just need a good bet. It could be anything, but often they are quite spectecular.

@Axejst: you are right, gottschalk suxx. :-)

I remember watching this show when I was still back home; it had always been on the cutting edge of shock and awe value. Something had to go wrong, sooner or later.

I hope Thomas Gottschalk gets a boil on his ass. He`s a jerk.

"yeah this is pretty wrong guys, it shouldn`t be on this site.

What next, snuff? "

That`s saying a lot, that it`s not too violent for youtube of all things, but it is too violent for a website that has NSFW 18+ links.

Walk it off...
No but seriously, why do people feel the need to
jump over cars? I know you gotta eat, but c`mon,
a job at McDonalds isn`t that bad and you won`t
risk your life... Most of the time

Why are all of you (in the comments here) saying that it`s not funny? No one claimed it was funny. It is a culturally significant moment, the worst accident in the history of these types of stunt shows. It`s not supposed to be funny, it is, however, definitely relevant.

so on this show people bet what a stuntman can do. (or so I`ve been told) So the point of the show is basically set up to prove the stuntman wrong, so why are they shocked when the stuntman fails?

nobody in the crowd knew what was really happening till she called for "ein Artzt!" then they all started gasping. kinda interesting study of human reaction. "everything is fine. he totally looked like he got hurt but it no one calls for a doctor he`s ok"

One of the spring-thingie`s he`s wearing malfunctioned and instead of going over, he was hit by the car.

He`s facing life in a bed now, possibly paralized below the neck.

And to top it off, his Dad was driving the car.

Even as warped as I am, I don`t see much humor in this
