I hate everyone happier (and richer) than me. I highly doubt this `happiness` for the pooches will last. They`ll be abandoned when they aren`t small anymore

I can`t imagine any of these dogs were given as complete surprises. There had to have been some kind of dialogue before Christmas. Not one of those people opened up the box and said, "Oh hey a puppy! I didn`t ask for a puppy...but okay?"

Everyone wanted a puppy, and the gifters obviously knew that the giftees were ready for that responsibility.

In the case of kids, obviously the dogs were family gifts, and obviously the parents were prepared to take care of the dog because they bought the dog. No one gives a dog to three kids and expects the kids to take care of it.

@I-IS-BORED

I`m not sure. Last time I used tape on the box I put it in, and it survived until they used a knife to open it.

So I`d recommend not using tape on the box.

the only way i would ever give a puppy to someone is if i also had several hundred dollars to give for vet bills too... presents shouldn`t cost you a ton of money in 6 months...

Sorry you had such a lousy Christmas. I`d be grumpy if all I got was coal too.

My puppy was a gift for Christmas, but I got her early.. she was literally the size of a beanie baby, and when my dad took her out, she was so still that I asked if she was real.. and then she started barking and wiggling xD Cute video.

Don`t give one dog; give two. Dogs cannot stand to be alone.

Also, those kids had better be responsible...

@nidonemo: i agree that "surprise" animal gifts are not good.

Though i think most of those in the video was kids, who was given dogs from their parents - and i think we should give them the benefit of the dbout and say that the dog will be a member of the family and be taken well care of by all of them, and that the parents take responsibility for the whole thing in the end. I`d love a dog, but i dont have space or time... maybe in the future :-)

We got a puppy as an early Christmas present and it`s been a great way to teach our 1 1/2 year old things. He already helps with feeding (just holding the bowl, really). Not to mention it gives our other dog a friend when we go out. I honestly couldn`t imagine life without a dog.

Please for pity`s sake, DO NOT GIFT ANIMALS! You MUST be ready to take it on as a responsibility! SO many dogs and cats end up abandoned and rejected because the novelty wears off and the family discovers they are not able to care for it.

What happens then? The animal simply gets tossed to the street or shelter because someone was STUPID and didn`t do their f*cking research!

THINK BEFORE YOU ACT!

OK, that made me cry. I *know* a puppy isn`t the best Christmas gift idea but still...Those were sure some happy giftees. As a kid, I always wanted to get a puppy for Xmas & never did.

Puppies... the gift that keeps on giving1

I`ve seen "16 & Pregnant" and the same could be said for them. At least you can lock a puppy up when you go out drinking.

I got myself a a Mountain Feist puppy for Christmas. Of course he wasn`t a surprise though, and I got him a week early. My favorite present by far.

I`d rather have a robot dog that doesn`t poop and has an off button. On second thought I`d rather get a pipe.

And as for the family not being ready as in the ADULTS also, then yes, its a pretty bad decision on the parents part.

For everyone saying its a horrible gift; so what? You teach your kids responsibility. In return they get a best friend. It`s not like they`re going to give a puppy to a five year old and expect the five year old to take care of it. But when he/she is 9 or so (depending on how mature your kid is) why not?

If you make the decision to have a family dog then there`s nothing wrong with a christmas puppy. Just accept that you are going to be doing all of the work.

Worst Christmas present, actually. Kids have a completely different idea of what owning a puppy means. They think it will be just like in the movies/video games. Owning a dog is a ton of hard work and frustration. A terrible thing to give to someone who is not ready for it.

That nearly brought a tear to my eye. As a kid, I always wanted a puppy for Christmas. Though since I`ve grown older I`ve learned that, practically speaking, a dog is probably one of the least awesome Christmas gifts if you live in a temperate zone. Think about it, you would have to house train him in sup-zero temperatures and walking him several times a day out there.

A part of me still wants a puppy for christmas. :`(
