*ahem* Treaty of Tripoli, Article 11, signed by John Adams (one of our founding fathers) and unanimously passed by the senate:

"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion"

@RFMITCH1

Yeah, but you figured only because you`re a pedantic twirp who`d rather issue passive-aggressive instructions than come out and state where you think I got your position wrong. Now, which Christian belief was our country founded on? There being only one God who sent his only son to die for our sins? Our penitentiary system and First Amendment are arguments against that. You are `amen-ing` a clearly flawed opinion you hold as a child would. There is no serious discussion to be held.

People shouldn`t get offended when someone tells them happy holidays. But, they shouldn`t get offended when someone wishes them a merry christmas, either. I mean, just because you don`t celebrate the holiday doesn`t mean you shouldn`t have a good day that day

Male 181
@RFMITCH1 What does any of that have to do with being an asshat when somebody wishes you happy holidays? Are you saying that because the U.S. was founded on Christian belief that Christmas isn`t a holiday? Are you also outraged when somebody wishes you a nice weekend, insisting they call it "Saturday through Sunday?"

Me: Hey, Mitch! Did you have a nice vacation?

RFMITCH1: Don`t call it my vacation, damn it! It`s Monday, June 21 through Friday, July 2. We`re a Christian Nation, for God`s sake!

It`s ridiculous that this guy would be offended, as though "Merry Christmas" is the only real salutation to use at this time of year, and "Happy Holidays" is as good as saying "Give money, go F*** yourself". Somebody had a bad christmas

Yep, Panda got it right. Americans are every group, culture, race, and ethnicity all scrambled together. I do not think that it`s at all wrong to say Happy Holidays, but I am in the majority, and for far too long we`ve been treated like we`re wrong just because of that. Our country is too politically correct, and it paves the way for small minorities to have bigger more influential voices that the majority.

There are multiple holidays from a variety of faiths and traditions this time of year. Personally, I say "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas", because it is my tradition to do so. It`s not about another person`s faith or tradition, it`s about my tradition and the meaning of goodwill toward others I celebrate this time of year. I would accept a person saying "Happy Chanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, Yule, etc.," in the same spirit. People like this Dale person just need to go get panty straightener.

This is bull. I`m an atheist, but my family is Protestant and celebrates Christmas, so I join them. I get Merry Christmas wishes all the time, which I appreciate, but hey, if someone wished me a Happy Hannukah or something, I`d take it. I will accept all well-wishes. Who cares if you don`t celebrate Christmas - have a happy December 25th anyway! Also, his use of the word "animosity" seems more than a bit too strong...

Hell, once somebody wished me a Merry Christmas, I said "thanks you too" and they said "oh I don`t celebrate it actually" so of course I said "well I don`t either."

No, I`m with Diegodefuego in this. Christian philosophy is supposed to be open-minded and accepting. "Do unto others" and all that.
Ghandi spent some time in a christian house, and he said something to the effect of "I`d be christian, if it werent for all the christians."

Also, that bell-ringer is standing outside for hours, ringing a bell and basically begging people to give to charity (and if you live where I do, the temperature is in the single digits). Dale can take his offense and shove it.

Dale TERHAAR. xxxxx CHEROKEE DR FERYSBG. Muskegon , MI. (616)842-xxxx

I`m surprised how easy it is to find someone so far away...

More to the point I find someone taking offense at a statement like `Happy holidays` (instead of Merry Xmas) a bit extreme. In the same respect people could be offended if you said Merry Christmas instead of happy holidays, or `Goodbye and God bless you` instead of (e.g.) `Goodbye and good luck`.

Moreover, the bell ringer, or anyone in their position is attempting to convey a positive message, which should be what one draws from the interaction and stick with that.

If someone were to say to me `May Jesus / God / Allah / Moses / Mohammad / Buddha / Sauron keep you safe` I would acknowledge the sentiment and leave it there.

I`m afraid that Mr. TerHaar`s action are characteristic of what one would call a `bitter old man`.
