I don`t care about Happy Holidays vs Merry Christmas- I think one is saying Merry Christmas and the other says merry Christmas and happy new year. I mean, what other holidays could you be celebrating? this week. Hanukkah was earlier in the month.

Not everyone celebrates Christmas and "happy holidays" is simply is wishing someone a merry "whatever the hell you celebrate". To say its attacking someone/something is egotistical, self centered and moronic.

He`s got two choices: Be non-religous, non-denominational, and wish a generic `Happy Holidays` to people, or ASSUME what that person might believe, take his chances, and risk bein called out on wishing Merry Christmas to a Jew or Muslim, or Happy Chanukah to a Christian.

This seems the best possible route to take, yet some idiot thinks the bell ringer should ASSUME that he`s Christian.

Christians aren`t supposed to be offended by something so trivial. That is if they really are of the faith they say they are. So really people like this douchebag give the religion a bad name. Not that I support organized religion just that these people so often contradict the very religion they claim to hold so sacred.

Let`s see if we can figure this out. Happy holidays is all *in*clusive. Which means, holy poo, it is a statement that includes Christmas, along with other holidays. Saying it is not, in any drating way, *ex*clusive, in that it doesn`t exclude any. How the drat hard is it for non-nice individual Christians to figure that poo out? Happy holidays, All.

Thirdly, again from my little effort, not ONE of the other sites/blogs/etc has someone interpreting his comments that way. No matter how `good` the intentions of sarcasm, humor, etc, perception is everything.

Dale TERHAAR. xxxxx CHEROKEE DR FERYSBG. Muskegon , MI. (616)842-xxxx

I`m surprised how easy it is to find someone so far away...

More to the point I find someone taking offense at a statement like `Happy holidays` (instead of Merry Xmas) a bit extreme. In the same respect people could be offended if you said Merry Christmas instead of happy holidays, or `Goodbye and God bless you` instead of (e.g.) `Goodbye and good luck`.

Moreover, the bell ringer, or anyone in their position is attempting to convey a positive message, which should be what one draws from the interaction and stick with that.

If someone were to say to me `May Jesus / God / Allah / Moses / Mohammad / Buddha / Sauron keep you safe` I would acknowledge the sentiment and leave it there.

I`m afraid that Mr. TerHaar`s action are characteristic of what one would call a `bitter old man`.

Mhh. If he is being serious he`s an idiot. I doubt that the bell ringer is even supposed to say "Merry Christmas". It`s a charity organization not a church collection, the guy collecting might not even be a christian and it`s not his duty to cater to individual religious views.

To all the people saying that Christmas has nothing to do with Christianity, yes the celebration was a pagan festival... 1700 years ago. Is that not enough time for the transition? And no it`s not Jesus` birthday, but it is the day people celebrate the birth of Jesus. Why does it matter that he wasn`t born on that day?

And Dale is a dick, or he is being sarcastic.

Nope, it`s actually just the opposite. However, it is usually the policy of idiots and a-holes to show this kind of animosity. And since Christianity has an open door policy, there are a lot of a-holes who call themselves Christians.

No, I`m with Diegodefuego in this. Christian philosophy is supposed to be open-minded and accepting. "Do unto others" and all that.
Ghandi spent some time in a christian house, and he said something to the effect of "I`d be christian, if it werent for all the christians."

Also, that bell-ringer is standing outside for hours, ringing a bell and basically begging people to give to charity (and if you live where I do, the temperature is in the single digits). Dale can take his offense and shove it.

Ugh, I`m tired of hearing Merry Christmas. It`s worse than saying "have a nice day." It`s like saying that if I don`t celebrate Christmas you DON`T want me to be happy. Plus, I`m expected to wish everyone else a Merry Christmas when I really don`t care.
Hell, once somebody wished me a Merry Christmas, I said "thanks you too" and they said "oh I don`t celebrate it actually" so of course I said "well I don`t either."

Agreed, looks like somebody went to the trouble to put a troll post in a newspaper. What a hassle. Get some paper, and a pen, and an envelope, and a stamp, write on the paper, write on the envelope, write on the stamp, lick the paper, glue the stamp, stamp the envelope or whatever, and THEN you CARRY it to a box somewhere so a petrochemical-powered truck can come get it. ZNaught: Fun fact; Christmas was an old pagan holiday, one of a number stolen by Christian leaders many years ago. The holiday was more about the winter solstice and getting drunk.

    The more you know ---===*

@ruthless1990: Statistics is a wonderful tool. Your very same source tells us that the percentage of Christians in the US dropped from 86% in 1990 to 82% in 2002 and continues to shrink. BTW, their numbers seem pretty old. Good that majority does not define truth.

Demanding that people who are nice enough to wish you a happy holiday call it Christmas (which is a holiday, by the way), is just another type of political correctness. Dale`s caught in his own paradox -- the only solution now is to shoot yourself in the face, Dale!

This is bull. I`m an atheist, but my family is Protestant and celebrates Christmas, so I join them. I get Merry Christmas wishes all the time, which I appreciate, but hey, if someone wished me a Happy Hannukah or something, I`d take it. I will accept all well-wishes. Who cares if you don`t celebrate Christmas - have a happy December 25th anyway! Also, his use of the word "animosity" seems more than a bit too strong...

There are multiple holidays from a variety of faiths and traditions this time of year. Personally, I say "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas", because it is my tradition to do so. It`s not about another person`s faith or tradition, it`s about my tradition and the meaning of goodwill toward others I celebrate this time of year. I would accept a person saying "Happy Chanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, Yule, etc.," in the same spirit. People like this Dale person just need to go get panty straightener.

Yep, Panda got it right. Americans are every group, culture, race, and ethnicity all scrambled together. I do not think that it`s at all wrong to say Happy Holidays, but I am in the majority, and for far too long we`ve been treated like we`re wrong just because of that. Our country is too politically correct, and it paves the way for small minorities to have bigger more influential voices that the majority.

@RFMITCH1 What does any of that have to do with being an asshat when somebody wishes you happy holidays? Are you saying that because the U.S. was founded on Christian belief that Christmas isn`t a holiday? Are you also outraged when somebody wishes you a nice weekend, insisting they call it "Saturday through Sunday?"

Me: Hey, Mitch! Did you have a nice vacation?

RFMITCH1: Don`t call it my vacation, damn it! It`s Monday, June 21 through Friday, July 2. We`re a Christian Nation, for God`s sake!

Yeah, but you figured only because you`re a pedantic twirp who`d rather issue passive-aggressive instructions than come out and state where you think I got your position wrong. Now, which Christian belief was our country founded on? There being only one God who sent his only son to die for our sins? Our penitentiary system and First Amendment are arguments against that. You are `amen-ing` a clearly flawed opinion you hold as a child would. There is no serious discussion to be held.
