ahh, Chanuka, the lesser known Jewish holiday. Much like the Catholics` Mardi Gras with Beer, Music, Parades, and More Beer. The Jews partake in a Festival of Meat. Ham mainly. A "Pork Party" of you will. Many of the children and the younger spirited adults take part in Traditional Games, such as "Bobbing for Radishes", "Poke the Poor Kid", "Throw bottles at the Drunkard", and of course, the multicultural classic "Make the bone stick out". All in all, the Holiday season can be fun for any and everyone. As long you know the right people....and believe the the right god.

Change the name from "Hanukah" og "chanukah" or whatever, to "Roger" or "Bobby".... problem solved!

Hey, let`s celebrate "Roger"...! Everyone understands this. No problemo!

angilion, the CH spelling came from the romans. the pronunciation is the same way most people say it but with more phlegm in the "Hu" sound.
what the drat is chanukah? is it like Hanukkah? :D
It`s the transliteration thing again. The right spelling is in Hebrew. Anything in any other language and/or alphabet is just a stab at replicating the pronunciation.

I`ve no idea how the Hebrew is pronounced or, more relevantly, how the relevant Jews pronounced it way back then. `ch` or `h`? No idea.

@Cobrakiller - lolz! I know lots of native folks and yes, most are really nice people. It`s too bad that they have really BAD leadership, eh?
@Gerry1of1 - I mentioned eating at my house before, but Muslims are NOT allowed to do that. Intolerance VS tolerance, I know where I place my faith...
@Volsunga - You`re fighting for a lost cause here bro, just let it slide...

The myth of the oil at the temple is and always has been a metaphor for the land of Israel as a whole. Their "purification" was the witch-hunt of everything that could be considered Greek-influenced and burning it. The book of Maccabees uses blatant Hebrew metaphor-poetry style when telling the story.

@xKiesix
Actually, if you go back to thanksgiving posts a few weeks ago, I did a calling out and rant against people who think Thanksgiving represents oppression of Natives. Definitely not one of them.

@gorgack2000
Ironic considering Penn did a rant once on this exact thing, although more for humor than I am.

@I-IS-BORED
More like cover my ass from Ptolemy, give my children free education and I kick you out because your education makes my kids not want their dicks cut. Antiochus was no saint, but he was better than the other emperors of the time, and much better than the Jewish Theocracy.

No wonder the Middle East is in a constant state of warfare between the Jews and Muslims. If I weren`t allowed to eat bacon, I`d be in a constant state of pissed-off too.

I can solve the warfare in the Middle East in a split second. Let them eat bacon. Delicious, delicious bacon.

xkiesix, you remind me of thanksgiving last year. i spent it with a few native americans and a Caucasian "native american studies" professor. all she spoke of all night was what you were talking about until my friends dad (a middle aged native american man) said "aw, shut up lady. we`re trying to eat here." then everyone just looked at him, before he continued. "just have another drink and enjoy yourself...its thanksgiving."

it was one of the funniest things i had ever seen. native american studies professors can get on your nerve really quick.

volsunga, the holiday is about reclaiming a prized temple from people who turned it into a shrine for zeus. when trying to purify the temple for 8 days, they realized they only have enough oil for one. but miraculously the fire burns for the entire 8 day purification period, returning the temple to its holiness.

Does anyone else think that Hanukkah is the most disgusting holiday of any modern culture? Seriously, it`s a celebration of the rejection of Greek knowledge, philosophy, and culture. This kind of ludditism and xenophobia should not be celebrated by anybody. Even looking at it historically, the revolution against Antiochus IV left Israel in an intellectual dark age until the Romans conquered them. Nothing good came of it, yet it is celebrated as one of the more important holidays in Judaism with a moral lesson.
