Get over religion and politics. It just comes down too many people living too close together.

Well all people aren`t like that. And we`ve come a long way in technology. I don`t know, I just wouldn`t lose hope because there`s no point in being sour for the rest of your life.

The problem is there is no normative goals given or explained. He says we squandered gifts but in what way, ie. by what perspective? If the ultimate goal of people is to maximize their own total utility we have done fine and if it is to maximize society`s we do ok but are lacking. What greater affair is he referring to? You must give parameters to make such statements. Does he simply want advancement in arts and sciences- well not everyone is an artist or a scientist though I personally find that more of my region of exploration.

Lrn2read.

I`m on your f*cking side, dumbass.

I was saying that that`s the problem, not enough people think like you or I do. They don`t want to go higher, they like how it is, so they`re content to just sit back and drift on the updrafts instead of trying to climb higher and higher.
You disgust me... as do all of you who think that our technological comforts are reason enough not to pursue more, reason enough to become stagnant. You are wrong as well, we might have come a long way, but we have new problems to tackle... wars, climate change, religion... I will not rest until I see this world and likely another powered by fusion, run by quantum computers and with people living a century and a half or more
You go, girl!

I will not rest until I see this world and likely another powered by fusion, run by quantum computers and with people living a century and a half or more - because that is what is possible and that is what we must aim for. Anything less is a waste of existence.

If you plan to sit around whining about how the US is slowly degrading please take yourself out of the gene pool so the tiny fraction of resources you would have otherwise used go to someone that needs them.

This country is doom, or at least, as a democracy. It is doom. I mean look at us. We are knee deep in debt and what do we do right after an election based on promises to reduce the deficit? Yep, extend tax cuts. This country`s debt is just going to get worse and worse. In a couples of generations, we will be no better than Germany post world war I. Then some great orator will recount stories of the golden age of America and promise the people to take them back to those days and finally turn what pathetic remain of the country into a dictatorship. That will be the story of America. At least we will probably invade Canada or something along the way.

Carlin still sold out his values, Then decided afterward to just take himself out of society.

He did exactly what he warned against, He gave up, Threw in the towel. I don`t find that funny at all, It`s sad.

Never really found much of his black humor funny at the expense of being a cynic expounding on the misery. I pity such.

You`re content to live the privileged and comfortable life you have. Would you want better? Most likely. Would you bust your ass for better like the people before you did to reach the point we`re at now? I don`t know about you particularly, but the point I picked up on is, he`s saying that no, most people wouldn`t.

The only reason we try to climb higher is to get higher up than everyone else. But since we`ve stopped flapping our wings and are drifting back down, getting higher than the other birds is really only getting as high as we were when we stopped.

I also liked his metaphor at the end. The pile of sh*t is deep, and digging out in "increments" is barely enough to keep up with the amount being constantly added, if that.

There`s nothing wrong with commercialism. Carlin`s an idiot. I love my iPad and my big screen TV. So what? I worked hard to get them and I enjoy them. It`s my life and my money. And I`ve never had a credit card and don`t need one.

The problem is all the idiots who can`t say no, who want things but aren`t willing to work hard to get them, so they go into massive debt and end up slaves to it for the rest of their lives. That`s not commercialism, that`s just weak people who can`t control their emotions, which is what the real problem is.
And it`s BS to say that humanity hasn`t made progress. Granted, we fall into the same traps over and over again, but we live in an extremely privileged and comfortable life in comparison to the way things used to be, and even in comparison to the rest of the world.
That`s the problem, though.

We MADE progress. We hit a peak, and since everyone`s happy with the way things are now, we don`t try as hard as we could to make things better. We`re like birds that reached the height we wanted, and stopped flapping our wings.

While I agree commercialism is draining us economically (we`re now a society of consumers instead of producers) I don`t think it has much to do with the corruption of our ideals. And it`s BS to say that humanity hasn`t made progress. Granted, we fall into the same traps over and over again, but we live in an extremely privileged and comfortable life in comparison to the way things used to be, and even in comparison to the rest of the world. You probably don`t have to worry about starving to death because you broke your leg and can`t work for a few months.

"It`s easy to abhor commercialism when you`ve got central heating and the choice of what to have for supper."

It`s easier to abhor commercialism when you have no central heating, and no choice what to have for dinner.

If your point is that he`s in no position to criticizes materialism and consumerism and commercialism because he was a successful man- you missed the point of what he said. He essentially said that it sucks and he doesn`t like it- but he also doesn`t care, so he indulges in it. Rather, he indulged in it.

But your implication that a moderately wealthy person decrying commercialism isn`t meaningful because they are a member of the system, is stupid.

A little ironical that they were two Gay man, ha?
I mean, they are being attacked for their immorality
but two of them are making a great difference for a
lot of kids

I still agree with Carlin, just because there`s hope
and some good acts around the world, it doesn`t mean
that we aren`t all part of the Freak Show

I agree... society is lamentably superficial and materialistic but bitching and moaning about it doesn`t accomplish anything but establish that we agree. We need ideas and solutions... not that I have any, of course... but I am sure there are others much smarter and more capable than myself who are up to the task lol
