anything with the word freedom in it`s name has always sounded corny to me. McGovern`s name is better IMHO.

We`re working on our plan to tour all the states--I hope this is done by the time we get to the East Coast. If it isn`t..so what, it`ll still be cool.

Just going to throw it out there... how long do you think it will take for this new tower to get bombed to smithereens?

Strange that its a Brit doing the reporting on this thing, instead of the Americans...Pity.

It`s amazing to think about all the stupid poo the major news networks choose to cover---yet not one drating peep about the construction of this thing.

Why don`t they name it Independence Tower I think that`s more fitting and catchy.

They should have built a runway, that would have showed any wanna-go terrorists.

Also, if AL-Q wanted to really hurt America, blow up the Santiago Comic-Con. THAT`s how you plunge a country into chaos: no good TV.

Nobody is asking you to live here.

I`m interested to see what design they finally chose.

That`s why there`s almost zero coverage

Nope. The reason why there`s almost no coverage is because people don`t care about half-finished construction projects.

Anyway, I think it`s great. Harness the obsolete power of American patriotism and you can achieve this.

Patriotism for America still runs the third rock from the Sun!

There is nothing wrong with the name Freedom Tower, 1776 not only refers to it`s height but the year of America`s `Freedom`, Our declaration of independence.

It`s going to be a beautiful building when it`s finished, Along with the others around it.

"If "freedom" or to put it another way LIBERTY was the main thing Al-Q were trying to strike out against, there was an easier, more obvious, more famous, more iconically American target less than 15 seconds away."

only nobody cares about the statue of liberty. we`d care more about the whitehouse being attacked than the statue of lib being attacked. the thought `meh, somebody bombed a pile of copper with less than 50 people in it.` comes to mind.

Really? Has everyone gotten so butthurt by the stereotype Europe has made of the US that they`re afraid of looking like a redneck for using the word "freedom"? I fail to understand how somebody could be that impressionable.
Remember what that word means, because this is an example of why we are losing it in this country.

Now, on the actual topic.
1776 feet was a great idea. 1776 was the year of American Independence. It gives the impression of a sophisticated response rather than a blunt "AMERICA MAKE BIGGER!" response.

It is already taller than the original tower. It`s the perfect height.

The "One World Trade Center" is again a sophisticated call out, and sounds like a thoughtful, unifying name. This seems to be the name they`re going for.

"Freedom tower" just brings to mind a combination of reactionary politics, bad Mel Gibson movies, "Freedom fries", 1984 doublespeak, and Bush Truthiness.

If "freedom" or to put it another way LIBERTY was the main thing Al-Q were trying to strike out against, there was an easier, more obvious, more famous, more iconically American target less than 15 seconds away.

Jamie, your second sentence belies your first.

5cats. Might I suggest, that if you think things are brought up too often, try this:
Don`t bring it up.

Especially in a totally unrelated topic, after 3 months of nobody talking about it.

Just a thought.

Times brought up by you in this thread: 3
Times by everyone else combined: 2, both quoting you.

They should have made them red white and blue, with eagles and stars etc and a big picture of mohamed on it (like the danish ones), let`s see if they want to build a mosque next to that......

yes i agree, makes it easier to see from the sky

I agree with videogamer.
The Americans should build the tallest goddamned tower in existence, just to show the rest of the world that they just don`t give a f*ck

Videogamer,

you do realize that the Dubai tower was built by an AMERICAN company right? in fact, all the tallest buildings in the world were...

who cares how tall it is...the US is not so insecure as a nation that, like Dubai, we have to try and prove how superior we are by making a overly tall building.

get over it.

Reply
Male 3,014
And when it`s done, the Dubai tower will still be almost 1000 feet taller.

I disapprove.

That`s odd @LazyMe, the MSM seems to think we care a LOT about a mosque that hasn`t even begun it`s construction... FAIL! lolz!

It is NOT officially called "Freedom Tower" but I like it: knock the `twin towers` down? Up goes the Freedom Tower! Taller than ever!

I say `who cares about the mosque` because the MSM loves to dwell on the hateful and negative in regards to the USA. I say Americans should rightfully be proud of all the good things they`ve done! That`s why there`s almost zero coverage (except negative) about the progress of the new buildings, eh?

I seriously ask: if America is so bad, why do so many people want to live there? It`s not like East Germany, where they had to build a wall to keep people IN!

why is everyone debating whether the height of this new building will stir the arabs to `attack` again? surely you are all aware that it was your own government that orchestrated the events of that day?
if they decide that they want another excuse to go bomb a third world country, don`t worry, they`ll think of something.

@sky132- I didn`t realize that all the terrorists were trying to do was teach us a lesson. It`s not stupid, it`s a statement. No matter how hard they try to tear us down, we will rise again, stronger than before. Sure it sounds kind of hokey, but it is in essence a memorial, and wouldn`t be much of one if we were trying to make it smaller than the old towers in order to be less of a target for another attack. That would just be a show of fear.

They should make it half the size of the previous towers and paint it red, white, blue. Then on the roof a giant F U should be painted. So when the enemies take satellite photos of new york the letters are visible lol

Freedom tower? Now that is a pritty naff name... I know you have alot of patriotism going on there, but don`t make that name offical. It brings to mind rednecks waving the Confederate Flag at NASCAR "Because we`re American!".

I hate the name "Freedom Tower". I think it sounds completely hokey and like something G.W. Bush`s brilliant mind would come up with. Nearly as hokey and embarrassing as "Department of Homeland Security". "One World Trade Center" has a more dignified cache`.

Ugh. I`m embarrassed that what was supposed to be a symbol of our perseverance will take 11 years to build after years of bickering and fear of making a bigger target for the terrorists to attack.

This should have been a higher priority, but it`s just another symbol of our bureaucratic wrangling holding up progress.
