So remember, if anyone ever asks you to go sightseeing in Estonia, say no.

Who can`t take a joke? I think it`s good that someone clarified what it actually means. As for me, I should have made the connection (the same phrase in Swedish is "kika in i köket" which is very similar), and since I didn`t, I`m happy someone clarified.

And it is pretty funny.

Awww. Boo-drating-hoo! Once again, the Europeans can talk trash about Americans, but can`t take a f-u-c-k-i-n-g joke. I forget (being a stupid American, and all), what`s a great foreign word for PUSSIES?! Diplomatic? Hell, no!!!

"Kiek in de Kök" is Lower-German (Plattdeutsch), as Spoken in the northern parts of Germany. It means "Have a look into the kitchen."

Hey GRadde, I`m totally fine, no need to calm down.
But yeah, sometimes I think that some descripitons are just dumb and poorly researched. Others are great and entertaining.
I admit that I often try to find out more about the stories, and yeah, sometimes I post it here. Keeping up the quality? Yes. Providing additional facts? Yes. "Besserwisser"? nah.

Hum. I`m torn here. On the one hand, I want to be the Besserwisser/know-it-all and point out what it means (and yes, I know I`m not the first).

However, primarily Illy, CALM DOWN!

Well it is old-German for "look in the kitchen" and some kind of name for castle towers. As the Baltic once belonged to the cultural part of Germany, you can find so called towers there. Hence Estonia.

Ok, this needs some clarification:
"Kiek in de Koek" ist the name of a tower (+museum) in Tallin, Estonia, NOT Germany
However, in 1285 Tallin became the northernmost member of the Hanseatic League –a mercantile and military alliance of German-dominated cities in Northern Europe, so German influence was always quite strong.

The name of the tower was first recorded in 1577 as Kyck in de Kaeken. Later on several forms were used, such as Kik (Kyk) in de Kok, Kiek in die Kueche, Pulffer-Thurm Giecken Koeck.

In 1696 the present name "Kiek in de Kök" was also mentioned,

meaning: peek into the kitchen

...in Low German. And true enough, it was possible to watch what the enemy was doing in their kitchen i.e. on position lower down from the about 38m-high tower.

In a nutshell: sightseeing in Germany is safe.

The museum is in Estonia but the name is old German for a certain type of tower. Yes, Google can be quite helpful ...
