Good effort? That was the best home xmas display I have ever seen!

It was awesome... Awesome to the max!

the peace sign was gay though. Anyhoo I have got to get in contact with whoever did that.

Also JustMarc is that what you call your lawn in Europe? If so what do you call your garden then? Your lawn?

I mean yeah, it`s awesome for the first minute. After that, it gets quite boring. That`s why I said good effort because it must have costed, the people who did that, plenty to time to set it up.

That`s the most kitchy poo I`ve ever seen and I agree with JustMarc.

To LordJonathan now sit on my lap : Lawn is a lawn as in the grass-part in a garden. Often a combination of grass and clowers. The garden itself is the whole area including trees, flowerbeds etc. So a garden may include a lawn, but a lawn can not include a garden.
I think it was a stupid question, anyhoo.

But yeah that was pretty damn cool even though it would be so annoying to live near if it did that every 5 minutes. It`d be funny to use to freak out carol singers as well.

Amazingly simply setup yet the lights make it seem so complex. If you think about it there`s not nearly as many lights as some people put on the front of their lawns at Christmas *Insert Dueling Banjos Here*

In LJ`s defence, here in America we call gardens "yards". Lawns are still the same; gardens are the part of a yard where vegetables or flowers are grown, exclusively...

As to the show...quite nice. I was put off by the fact that there were only a few different patterns though. At least he left himself something to shoot for next year.

Do you supose this is a guy who leaves his lights up year-round?

It sounds like Manhiem Steamroller or however you spell it. They make an industrial/techno sounding Christmas album. It`s actually pretty good if you get into the christmas spirit.

That is the best lighting I`ve ever seen. I don`t think I`ve even been to a concert that was as good.

a yard to us is not very garden-like (in our sense of the word). it wouldn`t have grass for one thing. it`d be paved and probably used mainly for working in. i`m likin this cultural exchange of garden/yard terminology. i feel like it`s bringing our two societies that little bit closer together.....excuse me while i vomit.

    very nice work
    not realy hard to configure
song, and light sequencer (not so hard to find if work on SFX)

and if they used high bright leds as i think, bill will not be a real problem.

do more original things!!! world need things like this instead war.

It wouldn`t be hard, especially with LEDs, You could run the whole thing on less than your computer`s power draw right now. Good call with the music, the whole thing was animated in the computer though, there is a guy who does that where you can `control` his christmas lights, but it`s just JPEGs loading locally of different configs. This is the logical extention, probably the same guy. Considering there is nobody in the film, and the music is added in post production, not live, it`s a construction, but pretty nonetheless, he had to setup the lights. Good Job.

Still wouldn`t be hard to do for real with a good microcontroller system controlling an array of power relays, or if you wanted to get fancy, a set of dimmers like we use in theater, then just synchro the animation to the audio timecode and you could do lots of different stuff, on the hour for people driving by.

    Thanks!

I can`t help but wonder if he actually did that though
    it`s quite possible and all
but there were a few parts where it looked a lot like it was just stop-motion filming
that`s the way I would`ve done it anyways
    much less time consuming

haha that was good! I would love to know how i did it. either he had a person contolling every power outlet in the house linked to the lights, or he used somekind of software. i remember once i created a light sequence on my computer at school for christmas lights, but im sure his was wayy more technical than the one i designed...lol

If it was live action in synch with the music using expensive strobe lights or LEDS then very impressive!
Unfortunately it is stop action and edited after to animate the lights with the music. Still a good ammount of work went into it, but not very impressive.

it`s real, please look at for 2 tips.. i know is not good resolution (internet video).

turret blinking light at left side

and bright star over the right side tree. if cut and paste to make animatios, those star need to move because photos are taken on diferent times.

Anyways.. i know how to do that in real.. not realy harder than a rock concert light FX, but still need a lot of work to syncro litghts with music, and some imagination to make the show a bit pretty.

And bill is not a problem... trust me... houses with more than 50.000 old type lights pay around 15 US$ night

This one is new high bright LED tech, comsumpt around 1/10 of the old type ones.... but need around 2x then bill is around 15/5= 3US$ night. the trick is keep them blinking.

I know the system that he used an i think i know who did it. his name is John Dagget and he is useing a MIDI system. The system controls smaller boxes that have xmas lights plugged into them. we used this system to do an effect on two 50-foot xmas trees for a christmas concert. and Taboopoison, he invented the system, so he can spend his money how ever damn well he wants!

Maybe I`m just cynical, but I really don`t think that`s a proper flashing light display...seems to me he just made a stop motion film after he took each picture of the lights on in different positions, and then just added the music in at the end.

If you look around 1:50 to 1:57 the (real) star seems to be moving back and forth and on and off. Maybe that`s just resulution problems.

Ya, so a couple of posts already answered the song/artist question.

Anywho... this is not animated. Perhaps the song was redubbed over the digital file as you probably wouldn`t have heard it come through as clear, but it is not only possible, it is very easy with the right equipment.

My wife used to work for High End Systems - a lighting company notable for the light shows associated with Metallica, as well as The Chemical Brothers. Prior to her leaving the company we procurred our own little C-16 Atmospheres kit. One of her friends, however, worked production and got a hold of a discontinued console (lower end Hog model). When this guy had parties, he had the Hog connected to several TechnoBeams around the house and could be sequenced up in about an hour`s time. Sequencing less tech-savvy Christmas lights would be even easier. On/Off at the appropriate time. You`ll notice the added touch of a dimmer sequence on the blue lights during the vocals.

u will be surprized how easy it is to do this stuff, X10 do a few systems, and you can build your own using relays and the paralell port and a multiplexer :P, but thats getting complicated, then you would write, or find, a probgram that lets u plot it on a time line :D

I was sent this link and thought it was truly Fantastic. The work of planning out your "hits" alone was a herculean effort. And yes I agree to that if everyone had a life, as people say, the world would be a boring place..
After reading the comments I agree with Tamas. The actions of the lightshow was recorded live continuously. The "author" simply re-recorded the audio to present the best example of the work for his streaming file.

(just for you lord johnathan, i hate your guts, but that has redeemed you...a little))" don`t buy a vowel, how bout a clue instead? would they cost more if they ran *all the time* or *off and on* hmm lets thing, what would use more electricity...dumbasses</i>

Yes.. you are the dumb one. Off and on would take more because there is a small surge when you turn them off.

yup, it would cost more to turn them on and do it when you wanted to show off, then just leave them on non stop. sorry, you`re the genious. because *surely* they would leave it on with the music 24/7. dipsh¡t.

This house is located in Mason, Ohio (just north of Cincinnati). It is not a Photoshop edit - I checked the place out myself last night. The music is actually transmitted on a low powered FM radio band so you need a radio to hear it and can only pick up the signal near the house. They also just run the show from dark until 10:00pm, although the traffic on the little cul de sac must be pretty annoying for tose that live there. This video must be from last year since this song is not used this year (although a different Trans-Siberian Orchestra song is), but the lighting set up is the same. Snopes.com has information on this video, including information about the house location.

Come on guys...this was a very good sync with the music, but the truth is, there were not many lights used at all. I have seen many houses using more for Halloween even. I am sure a few of you have been to concerts before. A half-way decent lighting crew, of about 3 good-old-boys, could set this up in a couple hours. I have watched the set-up of hundreds of spectacular lighting shows and with the right gear and cabling, it is not that big of deal at all.

    Just some things to say:

This can be made, so it doesn`t have to be stopmotion or anything like that, it`s just a whole lot of work to set it up.

LEDs would also consume a lot of power in this setup, just calculate 35mA per LED times uhm... like 2000 or so, 0.035 x 2000 = 70 Ampere, that`s a lot of juice and would require a massive power supply. I would be more concerned about power spikes when all lights go on and of at the same time.

All in all it`s a nice piece of work and deserves respect. The dude prolly has a life and cool (or at least happy) friends, you don`t make a show like that just for yourself.

Those peeps that said things like `boring, repetitive, etc...` you try and put something like this together, you`ll fail or get into it over your ears. The cables alone, each string has to be controlled seperatly, must take days to wire it up, plus setting up equipment and arranging to music.

WOOT!! That was great!! awsome sauce!! wish i had somthing like that in my town. we just have one street that works togeather i call it the christmas village. but as said before, peace sign is alittle gay, maybe an old light sitting around. still it was pretty cool. i just hope he has a boombox sitting out playing that song while the lights are doing the show, and make the town pay to watch. mwahahahahaha, make them pay!!! once again great.

The music used in the clip is by Trans Siberian Orchestra. The song is wizards of winter on their album The Lost Christmas Eve. Their concerts are a must see. One of the best live acts today.

OK, I have found exactly who did this. I am postive this is him, because I red it in the newspaper.

His name is "Carson Williams" and he lives in Mason Ohio (north of cincinnati). Do a google and you will get tons of results.

I thought it was stop-motion, too (but still cool), and then I watched again and noticed a distant, blinking light upper-left to the house. It blinks out of time, and occasionally through where the changes would be, and there would have to be duplicate takes, one with the distant light and one without.

The show is definately not "fake." See following story. Also music was not BLASTING but transmitted via FM so unless your radio was on, all you saw was the lights. Unfortunately, because of extremely heavy traffic and a minor accident, he "pulled the plug" after two days.

I believe Miller Light actually paid the guy for the footage of his house doing that and used it for a beer commercial.

He lives within my general area... I don`t know who he is, but it is all over the news here. I heard that his neighbors were going to sue him if he didn`t turn them off... so now I don`t think he is allowed turning those lights on... ever. Which I think is horrible... nasty hum-buggers who couldn`t even just say, "Please have them off by 11" 10 even!

Oh well. Still the most awesome thing I have ever seen in my life.

I have just watched this for the 4th time. I have it to save when I want to feel inspired. Same with the 2nd home that did this. It is so powerful to me - evokes strong emotion. And what I love about this is one decorationt he 2nd did not have the peace sign. It reminds me how desparately we need to work for peace somehow - in ourselves, in our lives. Yep, the fellow maybe did not have any of that in mind but that is how it affected me. And the Trans Siberian Oerchestra is so incredible. I saw them in concert. You just want to scream and cheer at the end of their concert. Such passion in their music. I`m sad about the negativity of some comments and feel sorry for those people. And I just have seen how Budweiser just must have gotten permission for their new commercial featuring this house - nice and big on TV - I love it, I love it, I love it.

Okay. I`m on page six of the comment and I already know that the song name has been listed like several times.... I do know something about the guy that does this, though I do not know him personally as I`ve read this on putfile.com. The guy that did this, does this EVERY year and does a different display each year. I knew his name... but unfortunately forgot it. His light displays are... sort of well known as there is usually a line of cars going along the road in front of his house to see this spectacle when it is going. NONE of this was photoshopped or whatever. This is real live footage. Just think. Who would take time to photoshop something like this? It`d be a total pain in the buttocks.

I actually live in Mason but have yet to see the lightshow. In a local paper here it is said that "Weeknights have averaged about 220 cars and almost 600 cars drove through this Saturday." The creator also helped out with a local festival, but I didn`t go to that either so I don`t know if it was as cool.

this probably will not be seen cause there are so many comments, but he did this using a home-built system. He has a computer comtrolling the power to each string of lights individually. Writing a timing program would not bee too hard, but programming it to the music would suck.

He said it took him 6 months of planing around 3 days to put all the lights up.
His is pretty cool but it`ll never be anything compaired to the orginal.

probably somebody already said this, but to answer questions i read on the first page:
    1)This is real
2)i believe it cost him about $10,000
3)he used a computer program to control and the lights and sync them to the music. this program(and a circuit board) can be bought for a few hundred dollars(a smaller version than what was used here however)

Anyway, if anybody gets bored(hmmm, why would you be on this website?), have some fun and search for more on Youtube. there`s quite a bit of houses now

think of the time he saves doing it that way. he can replay parts of the song that are looped. i`d estimate to make that video he had to take...250 to 300 pictures. the editing of the video to the music would be a chore though.

Well to answer a few questions. I seen a interview with the owner of the house. The Music is palyed threough a radio station, so he wouldn`t bug anyone. He is a computer programer, and that is how the whole thing is possible, not to mention that his electric bill is not that bad. It only get expensive when the lights are always on. Just thought i would clear a few things up, but i still cant figure out what the name of the song is. Does anyone?

Someone told me last year the music title and I` darned if I can remember it exactly, something like:
"In the Dark Forest" the old version of which can be heard here: http://ingeb.org/songs/vtyomnom.mid
the words look Russian here: http://ingeb.org/songs/vtyomnom.html
But the group is eluding me, it had Transylvania and orchestra in the name - I`ll ask around.

We have one of those houses here. They designate like 3 times a night they do the lights with the music so I`m assuming that`s what these people do...

OMG this is in my town!
It`s literally around the corner from where I live - they have a radio station that you tune to when you drive by their house and the lights are all coordinated with the music.

I thought this one was two years ago... Didn`t he do "Carol of the Bells" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Metallica??

That one was cool. Well, both of them are cool... *heh* I heard he had to shut it down and move to a field or something for his lights displays because his neighbours complained about too much traffic noise.

I remember when this first came out, like 4 years ago. The next season, every major city had at least one copycat, some of them pretty impressive themselves. I lived in Sacramento at the time and they had a great one, till the neighbors bitched about the trafic and they closed it down. This year Bakersfield has a half assed one, but still pretty cool. The one in this video is still the best.
