I remember when this first came out, like 4 years ago. The next season, every major city had at least one copycat, some of them pretty impressive themselves. I lived in Sacramento at the time and they had a great one, till the neighbors bitched about the trafic and they closed it down. This year Bakersfield has a half assed one, but still pretty cool. The one in this video is still the best.

I thought this one was two years ago... Didn`t he do "Carol of the Bells" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Metallica??

That one was cool. Well, both of them are cool... *heh* I heard he had to shut it down and move to a field or something for his lights displays because his neighbours complained about too much traffic noise.

does the music constantly play at their house?
ive never seen one of these in real life?

----

We have one of those houses here. They designate like 3 times a night they do the lights with the music so I`m assuming that`s what these people do...

On another note, I love this video, watch it every year. I especially love the song. :]

"In the Dark Forest" the old version of which can be heard here: http://ingeb.org/songs/vtyomnom.mid
the words look Russian here: http://ingeb.org/songs/vtyomnom.html
But the group is eluding me, it had Transylvania and orchestra in the name - I`ll ask around.

Well to answer a few questions. I seen a interview with the owner of the house. The Music is palyed threough a radio station, so he wouldn`t bug anyone. He is a computer programer, and that is how the whole thing is possible, not to mention that his electric bill is not that bad. It only get expensive when the lights are always on. Just thought i would clear a few things up, but i still cant figure out what the name of the song is. Does anyone?

probably somebody already said this, but to answer questions i read on the first page:
1)This is real
2)i believe it cost him about $10,000
3)he used a computer program to control and the lights and sync them to the music. this program(and a circuit board) can be bought for a few hundred dollars(a smaller version than what was used here however)

Anyway, if anybody gets bored(hmmm, why would you be on this website?), have some fun and search for more on Youtube. there`s quite a bit of houses now

The creator also helped out with a local festival, but I didn`t go to that either so I don`t know if it was as cool.

Okay. I`m on page six of the comment and I already know that the song name has been listed like several times.... I do know something about the guy that does this, though I do not know him personally as I`ve read this on putfile.com. The guy that did this, does this EVERY year and does a different display each year. I knew his name... but unfortunately forgot it. His light displays are... sort of well known as there is usually a line of cars going along the road in front of his house to see this spectacle when it is going. NONE of this was photoshopped or whatever. This is real live footage. Just think. Who would take time to photoshop something like this? It`d be a total pain in the buttocks.

I have just watched this for the 4th time. I have it to save when I want to feel inspired. Same with the 2nd home that did this. It is so powerful to me - evokes strong emotion. And what I love about this is one decorationt he 2nd did not have the peace sign. It reminds me how desparately we need to work for peace somehow - in ourselves, in our lives. Yep, the fellow maybe did not have any of that in mind but that is how it affected me. And the Trans Siberian Oerchestra is so incredible. I saw them in concert. You just want to scream and cheer at the end of their concert. Such passion in their music. I`m sad about the negativity of some comments and feel sorry for those people. And I just have seen how Budweiser just must have gotten permission for their new commercial featuring this house - nice and big on TV - I love it, I love it, I love it.

I believe Miller Light actually paid the guy for the footage of his house doing that and used it for a beer commercial.

He lives within my general area... I don`t know who he is, but it is all over the news here. I heard that his neighbors were going to sue him if he didn`t turn them off... so now I don`t think he is allowed turning those lights on... ever. Which I think is horrible... nasty hum-buggers who couldn`t even just say, "Please have them off by 11" 10 even!

Oh well. Still the most awesome thing I have ever seen in my life.

The show is definately not "fake." See following story. Also music was not BLASTING but transmitted via FM so unless your radio was on, all you saw was the lights. Unfortunately, because of extremely heavy traffic and a minor accident, he "pulled the plug" after two days.

I thought it was stop-motion, too (but still cool), and then I watched again and noticed a distant, blinking light upper-left to the house. It blinks out of time, and occasionally through where the changes would be, and there would have to be duplicate takes, one with the distant light and one without.

His name is "Carson Williams" and he lives in Mason Ohio (north of cincinnati). Do a google and you will get tons of results.

The guy that did the lights and music was on one of the morning shows (12/5). He is an engineer for GE in Mason, OH. It adds about $150 to his monthly electric bill. The music is broadcast over a FM channel people can tune into when driving by.

Just some things to say:

This can be made, so it doesn`t have to be stopmotion or anything like that, it`s just a whole lot of work to set it up.

LEDs would also consume a lot of power in this setup, just calculate 35mA per LED times uhm... like 2000 or so, 0.035 x 2000 = 70 Ampere, that`s a lot of juice and would require a massive power supply. I would be more concerned about power spikes when all lights go on and of at the same time.

All in all it`s a nice piece of work and deserves respect. The dude prolly has a life and cool (or at least happy) friends, you don`t make a show like that just for yourself.

Those peeps that said things like `boring, repetitive, etc...` you try and put something like this together, you`ll fail or get into it over your ears. The cables alone, each string has to be controlled seperatly, must take days to wire it up, plus setting up equipment and arranging to music.

Come on guys...this was a very good sync with the music, but the truth is, there were not many lights used at all. I have seen many houses using more for Halloween even. I am sure a few of you have been to concerts before. A half-way decent lighting crew, of about 3 good-old-boys, could set this up in a couple hours. I have watched the set-up of hundreds of spectacular lighting shows and with the right gear and cabling, it is not that big of deal at all.

This house is located in Mason, Ohio (just north of Cincinnati). It is not a Photoshop edit - I checked the place out myself last night. The music is actually transmitted on a low powered FM radio band so you need a radio to hear it and can only pick up the signal near the house. They also just run the show from dark until 10:00pm, although the traffic on the little cul de sac must be pretty annoying for tose that live there. This video must be from last year since this song is not used this year (although a different Trans-Siberian Orchestra song is), but the lighting set up is the same. Snopes.com has information on this video, including information about the house location.

Yes.. you are the dumb one. Off and on would take more because there is a small surge when you turn them off.

yup, it would cost more to turn them on and do it when you wanted to show off, then just leave them on non stop. sorry, you`re the genious. because *surely* they would leave it on with the music 24/7. dipsh¡t.

I was sent this link and thought it was truly Fantastic. The work of planning out your "hits" alone was a herculean effort. And yes I agree to that if everyone had a life, as people say, the world would be a boring place..
After reading the comments I agree with Tamas. The actions of the lightshow was recorded live continuously. The "author" simply re-recorded the audio to present the best example of the work for his streaming file.

Ya, so a couple of posts already answered the song/artist question.

Anywho... this is not animated. Perhaps the song was redubbed over the digital file as you probably wouldn`t have heard it come through as clear, but it is not only possible, it is very easy with the right equipment.

My wife used to work for High End Systems - a lighting company notable for the light shows associated with Metallica, as well as The Chemical Brothers. Prior to her leaving the company we procurred our own little C-16 Atmospheres kit. One of her friends, however, worked production and got a hold of a discontinued console (lower end Hog model). When this guy had parties, he had the Hog connected to several TechnoBeams around the house and could be sequenced up in about an hour`s time. Sequencing less tech-savvy Christmas lights would be even easier. On/Off at the appropriate time. You`ll notice the added touch of a dimmer sequence on the blue lights during the vocals.

I know the system that he used an i think i know who did it. his name is John Dagget and he is useing a MIDI system. The system controls smaller boxes that have xmas lights plugged into them. we used this system to do an effect on two 50-foot xmas trees for a christmas concert. and Taboopoison, he invented the system, so he can spend his money how ever damn well he wants!

it`s real, please look at for 2 tips.. i know is not good resolution (internet video).

turret blinking light at left side

and bright star over the right side tree. if cut and paste to make animatios, those star need to move because photos are taken on diferent times.

Anyways.. i know how to do that in real.. not realy harder than a rock concert light FX, but still need a lot of work to syncro litghts with music, and some imagination to make the show a bit pretty.

And bill is not a problem... trust me... houses with more than 50.000 old type lights pay around 15 US$ night

This one is new high bright LED tech, comsumpt around 1/10 of the old type ones.... but need around 2x then bill is around 15/5= 3US$ night. the trick is keep them blinking.
