I like his message, but he`s wrong about one thing. This behavior is not exclusive to America. People are like this everywhere.

I`m pretty sure Bill Maher is an atheist. He`s just calling out Oprah for saying her show is based on christian beliefs. Jesus wouldn`t buy 3D televisions to give to some idiot house fraus. Hypocrite christianity abounds!

Totally Agree... When I saw that episode of Oprah and I saw the people reactions I felt embarrassed for the human race. SOme of those people were literally going NUTS! Like they won the 5000 a week for life and then were told they would life forever!!! (now That would be something to go crazy for) ANyway.. it was just too much! again.. I agree with Bill

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

That being said, I hate Bill Maher. Holier than thou in human form. I guarantee he would join PETA if he thought there was a movie deal in it.

I have sat through his show a couple of times. And I have seen that he gets a great deal of attention on this America hating website. He just seems a little desperate and insubstantial. Like he is constantly trying to be relevant and smart. He comes off as neither. Has this guy ever said anything original?

@idiotfilter I think you should change your name, plus Rich does not = Majority Happy. In fact if you get down to it and see their therapists, the Majority of rich people are STILL not happy. Yes, Poor does generally = depressed, but again, that`s generally. I think it might have something to do with the rich people who do everything in their power to keep the poor poor, not with the fact that they are poor.

You think money won`t buy happiness?

Money will buy a Jet Ski!!!!
And you aint never seen a sad guy on a jet ski!
now some arguementative jerk will reply "I`ve seen sad people on jet skis"
The truth does not become a lie because of the mouth it comes out of or if its never said at all. A lie does not become the truth if uttered by every man woman and child on the planet.

The man is surely bringing in millions per year and has no right to bitch about joe-nobody getting excited over a toaster. While I completely agree that greed and materialism are the "religion" and definite driving force of this country - I just don`t see how living in the lap of luxury for babeling about your extremist points of view on TV makes you so much less materialistic than the person who won the Oprah lotto for sitting through one of her shows. I wish people like him would have to live life in shoes like mine for a year. Not a lot of money, CHOOSING to shop at thrift stores, still CHOOSING to donate some portion of my income to charity, using the same cell phone from the day I buy it until years later when it stops working, etc, etc - all to put myself through school so I can make a whopping 30k a year as a teacher. People love to talk to the talk about how bad materialism is, but they rarely walk the walk.

Poor = Majority Depressed

So the messenger`s a hypocrite? I don`t see why it discredits the message. If anything, it strengthens it, displaying how, even knowing it`s crazy, he can`t resist but fall to the temptation.
Plus I`m not so sure he`s entirely a hypocrite, though there`s definitely validity to the claim. You can have nice things without going batpoo crazy over having nice things. I always get the feeling that the Oprah freakouts are fake anyway. Why in the world would they be so surprised? She does this kind of poo all the time, I figure they`d be expecting it, ESPECIALLY on Christmas.

maher was raised catholic... which is why he hates religion so much. i do think that he does have a point, even if he comes off to be a prick so much. a lot of the christmas season has turned into greed, gimme gimme, etc. but i don`t think he has the right to point the finger at piss-poor people in the oprah audience who are excited to get a sweater when he`s got millions of dollars.

Yeaaaah, you keep thinking that Maher. Why dont you give up all of your nice things, and if someone gives you a gift turn it down next time. ^.=.~ (100% sure it wont happen)

@ SaintsFan
There is a huge difference between cheering for a sports team and cheering for free gifts on Oprah; the reaction may be similar (getting up and screaming), but not the reasons. You cheer for a team because you are a fan of the sport in question and you have a sense of belonging for the team, almost as if it`s you who loses or who makes a three-pointer, whereas those women on Oprah were cheering just beacause they received free gifts - which they probably had the means to buy anyways.
Oh and comparing spiritual rituals (which may seem insane to us but religiously meaningful to "those people in India") to some women going bat-sh*t crazy over a toaster is just rude and weak-minded.

Bill Maher is a self centered, self righteous egomaniac. If it doesn`t fall into his way of thinking, he deems it stupid. It`s all in how you see things. We see the same type of hyperactivity on Oprah as we do in bars everyday with people celebrating their favorite sports team. Is greed a major issue in the United States? Sure but good old Maher is just as guilty as the next guy. If he wasn`t, he`d do his show for the same amount of money that he was getting 10 years ago.

Bill Maher is obviously a bitter man who has anointed himself the "conscious of America". The Oprah people went nuts for a TV yet there are some people in India who pierce their body in the name of religion. Are we to hate them?

While I agree with him that the people on Oprah look like idiots, and that capitalism is America`s true religion why is that a bad thing? If he really thinks America is SO ROTTEN then why not leave, or try to do something productive to change it to fit his ideals. Being a judgmental prick is really not helping anyone.

Honestly I`m shocked it took him this long to figure out that people like "stuff". This is not a new concept. Even before 3D televisions people have always wanted the coolest things they could get their hands on. Unless he is willing to get rid of his "stuff" then it`s pure hypocrisy to make fun of others for wanting things. His whole rant just sounds so childish, immature and poorly thought out. If he is so against wealth and extravagance maybe he should stop hanging out at the Playboy mansion, sheesh.

Here`s my problem with Bill...

He could say the same thing and not be vulgar about it. He goes out of his way to be insulting and rude, which diminishes his message.

So I will agree with jamie76 and say "F-YOU pal"

I mean, look at this guy.

This is the guy who likes to wag his finger in people`s faces and tell them how to act. This smarmy, unfunny jerk off?

His stand-up sucks, his movie was weak, and his show is so biased it`s not necessary to watch. Please.

I believe you can still be moral and have a reason to live even if you don`t believe in myths. The only reason the world needs religion at this point is because the mass public wouldn`t know what to do with themselves without it. Believe in the miracle of life and existence because it`s frickin` awesome, and don`t add b.s. to it.

i agree with Vonnegut in that the world needs religion even though it`s false. people need to believe in something and the world can`t function if everyone was a secular humanist. and seeing as how he took over as president of the American Humanist Foundation after Assimov died, i think he knows what he`s talking about

! The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Christmas, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much.

I`d have to agree. Christmas, whether you believe it`s a secular holiday or a religious one, shouldn`t be about the gifts you get - it should be about celebrating the day the way it was meant to be: either a celebration of the birth of Christ, or a coming together and celebrating a year gone by with friends and family.

i despise bill maher with a passion, but i agree with him about the want to acquire crap you don`t need. i wish i was on that dump of a show oprah to get all of that junk, because i would sell it and buy something useful. like a case of beer, beef jerky, and some black cats. you know, the essentials.

What? Bill Maher actually making sense? It IS the end of teh world...
But yeah, people have become a lot greedier: less "I will work for what I want" and a lot more "GIMMIE it for FREE".
Which explains the current government in the USA...
Merry Christmas! It should be more like Thanksgiving, be happy for ALL the good things you have; friends, family, kitties, a warm house and clean water.
