    50 cal was the right choice, at least if it goes wrong you dont have to worry about facial disfigurement or brain damage.

    Epically Dumb.

    As my father told me, "You never point a weapon at someone you aren`t trying to kill, Whether or not you believe the gun is loaded."

    Waiting for some idiot to repeat this stupidity and fail in 3.. 2..

    Thank God this is fake... (it takes way to long for the melon to explode after the shot) but unfortunately some moron will believe this is real and try to copy it now, and it will be the guns fault when the results aren`t the same.

    @donthaveone

    I do believe it is fake, because the guy uses a LOT of special effects in his videos.

    However, bullets do take time in order to hit their target. The bigger the bullet, the longer it takes to reach the target.

    Its not like call of duty where the bullets go at light speed and kill at 300 yards immediately after the trigger is pulled.

    @raven_mac

    "Call of duty" now that`s funny... I love how every gun related reference comes back to that these days, someone should make up a new law (like Goodwins law) for gun/internet related topics.

    Anyway.. I do enough real shooting to know they don`t take that long :) A .50 cal is moving at roughly 3000 FPS and they were only shooting 50 (maybe 75) yards at best, it would take around a 10th of a second (if that) to get there. That was way to much of a delay to be close to being real.

    @TPGman - i KNEW that would come up at some point in this thread.

    No, it won`t - there`s no concussive force, there`s no magic "vortex" that sucks air behind it. There`s no gale-force winds trailing the round as it flies by.

    Mythbusters proved that`s it`s pretty much impossible. And if that were the case, regular-sized bullets (5.56/7.62/.45/9mm, etc) would have a similar effect of being able to "feel" the wind as they fly by. Trust me- you don`t. You hear a whanging sound with a little "zzzzzz." Anything else is purely psychosomatic.

    From an avid firearms enthusiast, that (if real) the guy does great special effects!))is by far the dumbest thing I have ever seen. You know damn well a 50 will not be doped out for 75yrds. I can not believe that some one would actually do this. With over 13000 ft/lbs of muzzle energy there is zero chance of survival if that round touches you.

    @slab_of_rage... really wasn`t looking for a rational explanation, but thanks anyway!!
    I figure if they were actually doing this, might as well hold it on your head with your hands - in the end it doesn`t matter how the melon stays on the melon - all winds up as mist in the end.

    This is probably fake. If you look on the ground to the left of him at 0:30 you can see wires idicating that the melon is rigged with explosives, and the rifle`s loaded with a blank.

    Spider anything that is contained and filled with water will explode given the right caliber round. It has to do with pressures and whatnot blah blah blah. A .22 might not make a watermelon explode but just about any serious round will. Just ask R. Lee Ermey about his dreaded arch rival. A .50 cal will literally tear a body in two, sending both halves 25 ft or more from the point of impact.

    Some of the most fun I`ve had shooting has been filling jugs or cans with water and watching them explode.

    Not commenting on whether or not this is real, but in this situation the watermelon would definitely explode. Kind of sad if it is fake, because it isn`t a hard shot to make, especially lying prone. (I`m glad the shooter had on his ghillie suit to sneak up on his unsuspecting target.)

    chimmeychang, hydraulic shock would cause the melon to explode in all directions starting at the entry/point of impact, then continuing on toward the exit. The particles will be ejected farther on the exit, but that`s because they had some of the bullet`s momentum directly transferred to them. Here`s a video showing hydraulic shock in various objects at a very high speed:

    Slo-mo bullet footage

    This was most definitely a fake video, but they did a damn good job on the effects.
